What exactly is obsolete about G8? Clothing, hair, and poses for G8.1 will still work on G8. All of your G8 characters can be loaded onto the G8.1 base. No complex tool or clunky manual workarounds needed. From what everybody is saying, G8.1 is still the exact same mesh...only with a new UV map and updated facial rig. This is not moving from G2 to G3 or G3 to G8. 

So why the high price, it's the same price as a full generation base character?

High price? The base character (G8.1F) is free, ok it's the same price as all the Genesis base characters that are also free.

To get the Vellus hair which is described as a genesis 8.1 feature on the announcement page you have to buy Victoria 8.1 University bundle which is basically a pro dundle under a different name.

Your guess is as good as mine, but folks are acting like the sky is falling when it comes to their G8 figures when they're losing exactly nothing. All of my G8 morphs show up on G8.1, so the only difference I'm seeing are improved expressions and a new UV map and skin shader.  

Victoria 8.1 is an entirely new character much like Victoria 8, Bethany 8, Charlotte 8, etc are.  Just like those characters had a bundle, so does Victoria 8.1. You can buy her alone, with her bundle (the university bundle) or just use the base Genesis 8.1. There are also improved teeth/mouth realism, a new tear geometry and a new lash geometry. I know the splash page only has the front teeth showing, but they did an amazing job updating the shape on the teeth as a whole and the tongue. 

Updated to 4.15 and got the Genesis 8.1 female model. Absolutely love the new face rigging and that all of the old morphs transfer over. My one issue is that the 8.1 lashes have no texture. They look like giant grey windshield wipers. There was no new skin maps for the base model either, as advertised. Does Victoria 8.1 have the same lashes issue? Perhaps it was an incomplete/corrupted install?

edit: the lashes have texture when loaded in with the whole model, but not when brought in on their own.

I hope they do too. I already have vellus hair that came with products costing less than $20 (which I probably got for 60% off or more), so the chances of me spending $100 to have more aren't particularily high.. 

Why is the Victoria 8.1 University Bundle not available for download via DIM, please?

I mean, I suppose if you actually had to buy all you old figures over again then that would be quite shady, but you don't; they work just fine. Sure there's a new Vicky, but she's most definitely NOT Victoria 8. Just like Victoria 8 wasn't Victoria 7, or 6, or ext..

I'm with you here; I've made some comments about Daz and have been told off; this, however, seems great. It's free, it works with everything, or close to everything that is on G8.0F, and 8.1 gives us some improvements - and from what I'm seeing they are improvements.

If someone doesn't like it, do what I've done until december last year - not spend a cent. Vote with your wallet!

There is so much negativity on this thread it is difficult to judge what is going on. So here we have
 - Studio 4.15
 - 8.1 base figure
 - BJ Noemi Morphs
 - BJ Noemi skin
 - OOT hair (chosen to keep the face clear)
So I can use G8 as before, and I can use G8 content on G8.1 should I choose. If I use G8.1 as a base I get the new expression  stuff, and I can use the Face Control interface. Which is cool. The only thing to note is the new eyelashes, which are a little OTT, but I could have removed them and used the Noemi set instead.
All this is orthogonal to the decision of whether or not to purchase Victoria 8.1 and the other items. The figure is okay, the other items are weak.
So my interpretation of the new changes is "small earthquake, not many dead"

I was thinking the same thing. The 8.1 Victoria is nice, but I don't see any earth-shattering realism in the promo images. It doesn't seem like that big of a jump to me, but maybe we will see some artists make some really great promos with new 8.1 figures.

I just finished completing all my purchases for all the Genesis 8 content I had been waiting so long to buy. So I can't afford to buy new figures and content at this stage. In a way I'm glad it's just a .1 update, and not a completely new jump to a new version number, or I would be really beside myself at this point.

As long as they are making improvements at DAZ3D it's a good thing. Poser was not as well-supported or as fortunate.

As far as I can see from the advertising, the genesis 8.1 upgrades are concentrated on facial expressions and textures. I see that genesis 8.1 HD adds various skin details (though to be quite honest, to my eyes many of the changes just make her skin look old and wrinkly).

Have there been any changes to the way joints work?

If not, then can we expect a Genesis 8.2 sometime soon where the joint bending is made more realistic?

Oh and one comment to the Marketing Division about this part of your advertising:

"She's the same Victoria you know and love: a brilliant advocate for others that spends time volunteering for nonprofit organizations. Be ashamed! What are you trying to do? Improve sales by making people feel sorry for a polygon mesh? Genesis 8.1 is deaf because she is a polygon mesh with no possibility for hearing! Genesis 8.1 is not a real person, in case you hadn't noticed!

That aside, it looks like 8.1 is a significant improvement over 8.0. However, I will wait until some of the compatability issues (like GoZ transfer to ZB) have been sorted out.

This bundle is definitely junk. The stuff in it is great, don't get me wrong, the products themselves look great and I can see myself wanting a few of them, but the bundle? My goodness no. I mean, this is a new Vicky. She is the face of Daz. She made Daz into what it is and this is all they offer her? I mean, if I was her I'd be offended. Where's her bundle sisters? Where is her SWORD? I mean, that last statement sounds funny, but seriously, wasn't Vicky in a Cave With a Sword or whatever her defining thing? And why is she getting reruns of old products? I know Daz is especially enjoying doing this lately, but come on, this is Victoria, and all they give her is a half-hearted attempt?

 Again, not talking smack about the products, the new tech that went into G8.1, or anything outside of the actual grouping of (or lack thereof) products in the bundle.

Nope. Same mesh. Same shape. Same skin basically. You should notice that 8.1 has a second mat zone for the Torso area-- now it's Body & Head. Also, the mouth realism is amazingly improved. The expression system is also different and improved. There is a new eyelash mesh and a separate tear mesh that both step up the realism overall. The tear in particular does amazing things to the eyes in renders. There are new UVs available to use as well and are a little different on the face, neck and torso. Also the new eye UV is unified so there is no gap between the pupil and iris or the iris and sclera. The new shader that is available isn't used on G8.1 but is on Victoria 8.1 and will likely continue to be used moving forward. It was designed specifically for skin to be more in line with standard PBR shaders (as I recall).

Overall buying V8.1 University bundle with the HD addon and two other addons comes to $75 for me even with the 20% discount for owning Dorm Room and Matilda hair. And that is a little pricey for my budget.
