I tend to be somewhere else on the spectrum with Xi's environments. There are a lot of things they use that make it difficult to see in texture view. Environments like the Futuristic Home Office have transparencies that make it impossible to see where you're posing things, and do the same in filament. Try to take a look inside the structures of environments like Barren Land and it all looks like static, you can't see where one piece of structure ends and the other begins. There are more than one environment where not only do the internal doors from one room to another pivot in the middle rather than at the hinge, but they and external doors are instanced. I also like to use Dimension Theory's Sketchy shaders (and tweak textures here and there in general), which makes another thing very apparent with Xi's environments: Anything emissive is complately baked into the texture, meaning if you want to keep the lights, you have to create a geoshell and track down all the light and masking textures.

I can't help but to have bought a few, but I generally don't like using them.

Adding to that, I learned not to expect historical accuracy from their products. There quite a few products look as if they were made by someone who never saw more than some scetchy pictures of the original. Kinda like those "historically accurate" bavarian houses in the chinese holiday park. Nice to look at, but way off from how they should really look.

  • FilaToon / Cell shaded rendering with Filament

Another go-around with filatoon.  Used Face Transfer to create a morph and then used 1-click Anime and Stylized Skinny Girl to shape it. This time decided to experiment with not applying the filatoon skin shader but used Toon for Mira and blended it with the face transfer generated MATs using the surfaces base color image selection menu's built in layer image editor.  Used Oso's Filatoon Tools to add details to the face.  For the hair I just used the general Filatoon Basic Shader and for the clothes used Kindredarts Filatoon shaders for some of the cloth and metal but left the leather as loaded. I used filatoon skies for background.  Played around with filament/environment settings and Presto got something I quite like.  I prefer less anime toons and I think this is a step in that direction.

The promos all look as if they are done in filatoon but it lists Iray materials. If its designed for Iray then do the promos in Iray - this is just odd, if the shader is Iray then you are going to have to apply the filatoon shader and adjust the settings to get anything that looks like the promos. Because the promos don't have an iray render I actually have no idea of what I'm actually getting.

No Iray Presets according to its readme, it's likely a mistake in the description (you can report it through the other discussion):

  • FilaToon / Cell shaded rendering with Filament

I was speaking to my flatmate and noticed he was watching his DVD of 'Asteroid City' by Wes Anderson, c. 2023 on his computer. I realized it bore a resemblance to Filatoon/Filament, without the black lines, and seemed to be a toon background with human actors, who have been changed to a toonish look, and no one was casting a shadow. I thought I would bring it to your attention in this thread as it seems like a version of what you all are working on.

  • How to find Filatoon content in the store or in Studio?

Filatoon, Fila-toon, Fila toon, Fil* and Filament all return different results in the store and in Daz Studio.
There are some items that don't show up at all with these searches.
Anime and Toon show some filiatoon items, but also items that are not filatoon.
How best to search for these things?
    Thanks!

To be fair, there was no mention of development teams.

Presenting it as I wish you had done X not Y does rather imply that doing Y took resources that could have gone to X.

     That I agree with.

    Hi everyone. Drum roll please...

As Director of Technology for Daz 3D, I wanted to give you some big news.  The Daz Studio team has been hard at work on a massive foundation change for Daz Studio that will be released as Daz Studio 5! Our project has been the #1 priority for the team for quite some time now, and it's almost done.

    <snip>

As for the final Daz Studio 5 release:
    - The timeline for this is to have it out near the very end of this year.
    - Features and enhancements will be rolling in through the rest of the year.
    - Anyone who has Daz Studio 4 in their account will be able to keep it. You'll be able to continue to download and use it for the foreseeable future.

I hope everyone is just as excited about Daz Studio 5 as we are.

That was July, 2021. At least one of those predictions has come true: We can still indeed download and install Daz 4.

I know this is not being helpful, and I know Mac moved the goalposts by dropping Apple Silicon on everyone in 2020, but we're going on a half-decade now. I'm baffled how something can transition from "almost done" and "the very end of [2021]" to Welcome to Duke Nukem Forever mark II. Do we have anything even vaguely approximating an ETA?

The way in which this post, by a  former employee, keeps being brought up is a major part of the reason that there is no ETA for the next major version of Daz Studio.

In all fairness,  the "former employee" (Director of Technology for Daz 3D) was doing damage control. The Mac OS "Big Sur" was announced on June 22, 2020 and released on November, 2020; DAZ Studio didn't work on machines running it; the next OS, Monterey, was announced on June 07, 2021. At the point of the announcement by DAZ_Rawb (July, 2021), the then-current OS had been out for eight months with a new one on the horizon and any Mac hardware upgraded to it (intel- or silicon-based) or any new machine purchased couldn't run DAZ Studio. At that point, I had over $60k in DAZ content alone but if I wanted to update my computer or buy a new computer, the investment in content would be rendered useless.
In hindsight, had they known that they'd shortly get help from Apple that would make his announcement unnecessary I'm sure the post would never have been made, but in truth they hadn't been able to get it working for eight months at that point and something had to be done. They made the decision to put out a pre-beta (alpha?) that would allow Mac users with newer operating systems to at least use their content in a bare-bones (but with Filament!) program.

If they hadn't made the announcement and just gotten it running, instead of quoting the post every year I'd be asking when I was going to get Filament, since Filament had been released almost five years ago. Mac users would still be making posts asking about an Apple Silicon-native version, and so on.

There'd still be posts asking for updates, road maps, hints of upcoming features and so on, and we'd still be here, still wondering.

A total lack of any road map or any word whatsoever would still have people asking what they should be expecting or looking forward to, especially if they're investing hundreds or thousands of dollars on content. It's only natural to want to know how their investment will turn out.

THank you for checking about the Persona save.  laugh

Hopefully, it'll work in your case (I don't have this converter, maybe one day when Daz has finally added support for Filament on MacOS).

But if you need help to use a post load addon script, I have yet to try using one with Personas, but I tested yesterday how to load AE using a character preset with the default post load addon script and I was able to get it to work, keeping track of the values to use to tell the post load addons script to load AE with the correct texture.

Persona save? What the heck is that?

In essence, it's a scene preset supercharged with functionnalities from character preset, or a character preset made as simple to save as a scene subset (post load addon settings are painful to set angry). It's available for any one to test, using the current public beta build:

  • Issue with wrapping a plane primitive around a sphere

Hi! I am not sure if i comes from the object itself, but I have an issue when I add a bump map: on the render, there are kind of defects that don't appear in filament:

Do you know where the issue could come from, please?

    Thank you in advance!

  • Flat/smooth hair shader compatable with filament?

Hi, is there any hair shaders that'll make the hair flat/smooth without each strands/strips/cards/mesh visible? 90% of the hair looks terrible on filament and are resource hogs on iray. Using strand shader or filatoon shader gives an ugly choppy hair. Even if use good texture after applying strand hair shader via products like FSL texture for strand hair, it's still barely presentable. The issue is the mesh itself is ugly as they are just meant to be translucent guidelines for the hair shaders to render fiber like hair on iray and filament can't handle translucent hairs. Sorry if I sound a bit bitter, just frustrated why daz has not fixed filament hair issue despite its one of the most sought after improvement. I'm looking for something that'll crush appearance of individual strands or mesh, smoothing and blending it into one, but with a adjustable highlight of sorts that implies form. See attached example.

Just wanted to verify all the testing and work done since Filatoon has been released and the new work put into Filament:

    - Transparency/Opacity still has issues displaying correctly in filament (i.e. hair)
    - Emissives does not cast light to any nearby objects
    - Environment map only works with hdri images, unlike how Iray behaves
    - Reflections only work with hdri and no 3d objects

Is there some limitation with the Google Filament engine or has it not yet been plumbed into DAZ? Some understanding of the road map will be very helpful as I do have some projects that may require these features or if I need to move this to a render engine that can support this.

The transparency/opacity issues have been solved if you use the Filatoon Shader on the hair (or anything else that has a transparency/cutout opacity map).

I've run numerous tests on this - it does not work in all situations. This is especially true if the surface can be see from the back side and the mesh with opacity maps overlaps - depending on the camera angle. This issue still persists.

When using Filatoon shader on trans-mapped hair you need to adjust the "PBR Masked Threshold" (it's under the Cutout Opacity channel in the Surfaces Tab):

Thanks - I have tested this before and it does get it about 80% of the way there - it works in certain situations but not for the projects I'll be working on. For some of the hair, it does leave parts of the strands disjointed if the OP maps has some thin faded lines - raising the threashold just makes the hair clumpy. Appreciate the tips.

  • How to hide shadow of specific objects in Iray

Not like 3DL and Filament in DS with which you can fully control shadows... Iray is a pure PBR ( physically-based rendering ) engine, there's no way to 100% hide shadows from lights or to specifically control the shadow settings with Iray engine.

If you use spotlights, you can increase the value in Height property to soften shadows.
