I too am on this journey and it has not started well.  I finished blending my data folders and successfully eliminated duplication.  In my personal log I came across a reference to DB maintenance (Context specific RMB while in Smart Contemt.)  Related or not, I managed to fry my hard drive - or at least the partition with my recently improved DAZ content folders.  Since this was the step prior to backing up, I am having to go back a few months as a do over.  Not really great. But there is a point.  As I reinstall content I am testing the default versions and, where available, my creations.  Obviously (maybe), I am encountering my versions of characters that are missing content.  For instance, as i load my version of MegaM, created while I had Kitten and AutoFaceEnhancer installed, I now get a series of missing file messages because I do not have them currently mapped to my DAZ content directory.  That might be what you are encountering.  

As I reinstall I am trying to assess what to partially include and what to not include as a way to manage RAM consumption.  The first thing, might be obvious, to share is that when some characters say for instance Gabi HD for Leisa 8, the 'for' has varying degrees of significance.  In the sited case, Gabi does not look at all good without Leisa.  In other cases it is not as dramatic but you need to consider that as part of your strategy.  Don't be reomving something that is required for something you want.  I am also encountering a few characters that only have head morphs and skins.  The real punch line might be that there is more to be saved looking at expressions and geografts; or if you might have an entire pro bundle where you are thinking about removing all of the characters.  

I am still wrestling as well with the character specific shapes, expressions, or pose/expression combinations vs general sets that apply to the family.  More on that when I sort the current catastrophy. . .

Favourite female skins are Babina, Zelara, Alawa, Kala, Tasha, Edie, Bridget, CJ, Leisa, & Monique (wish she didn't have eye bags).

Male favourite skins are Dain, Nix, Valentino, Dasan, Floyd, Vladimir, Tristan, Jonathan, & Christian; so, the males have definitely benefitted from the longer run of G8.

I believe Caryn and Tobyn are not "8" core characters. They are "for Genesis 8" characters, like PA characters are. Their names are not really Caryn 8 or Tobyn 8, they are Caryn HD for Genesis 8 Female and Tobyn HD for Genesis 8 Male. Of course that doesn't mean they can't be included. I'd say it is up to Novica whether she wants to extend the gene pool that far.

That is correct, except they released add-on characters for them. Which led to some confusion on their release.

Of course, Daz could simplfy our lives and come out with Baby 8 after Cat 8! :-) I adjusted the list.
