http://shop.aprilsvanity.com/delphi-hair.htmlISO Classic Barber's Smock or ApronSo it looks like I do have the Mad Doctor apron. So I am going to see if I might be able to use that and perhaps take the pockets from the lab coat and combine them. Not sure yet. But also, does anyone know where I might be able to get some good barber shears or scissors?
There are a few options there, though it's surprising how many Barber shop sets don't include them - Sloshworks has a nice looking set here at DAZ that comes in both his Chez Lucille Hair Salon and his The Werks Mega Prop set, but I don't know if they actually open /close since those weren't options the last time I needed one. As it is, I've got four or five barber shop/hair salon sets and the only one that came with sheers at the time were Greenpot's Barbershop and PuzzWizz's Hair Studio, both at Rendo, but while the Greenpot's ones are fairly accurate looking and the only ones that come in both shears and shear-combs, they're fixed props that are permanently open, while the PuzzWizz versions are permanently closed. IIRC, I ended up duplicating the Greenpots version, hiding the extra halves with the geometry brush and parenting the two pieces to a pair of regular scisors from Maclean's Everyday Household Item's set, which DO have an open close morph.
Was it just me or....I would assert that females also 'look' to see things like confidence, intelligence (sparkle?), alpha-presence, and similar species-based strengths, as well as more modern indications of capability like wealth, class, style of dress, athleticism, and posessions, etc. And that's just keeping to the visual. Both genders happily chat about 'how hot' a particular specimen might be, absolutely, but the males will auditably act upon *looks alone* where-as the females are far more likely to vette their 'relationships' with far more scrutiny (not always...). I smile thinking of the Gaston vs Belle song lyrics in the Disney 'Beauty and the Beast' productions. To him, she's the prize because she's "the most beuatiful girl in town", to her, he's a good-looking oaf. This 'myth' is indeed changing, but it doesn't come from a vacuum, nor is it impractical or illogical for a species, merely tragically simplistic for my taste. The problem might be, that there are different "goals" for these preferences, too.
When the goal is just to have sexual intercourse, stuff like looks and charisma usually are the more important part. When it comes to breeding and having a family type relation, the females often start to set their preferences more to the non-looks abilities of the potential partners, so that the offspring has a good chance to get raised properly.
Alas, that's how it was supposes to have been during the olden days...
But as genetic finds have proven, there was quite a lot extramarital sexual intercourse going on even in what could be called "closed social environments" - like ashkenazi jews - with females being married to someone who would give them financial and social security, but at the same time having other sexual partners - with higher values in the "looks/charisma" department - and getting pregnant from them.
Nowadays, as females have better chances to be able to take care themselves for their financial security and a somewhat changed look of society on "single mothers" the need for a "providing partner" has diminished a bit.
For males it probably is a wee bit simpler: as the motto is "spread your genes around, the more the better, to make sure your offspring outnumbers any other man's" going "for the looks" is used more than "going for some person to live with for a lifetime". And even certain older physical preferences resulted in this "have to breed" genetic setting. Wide hips - to give birth easier and with less problems - and great mammalian protuberances - so the babies have something to suck on - with a complete "healthy" appearance where once the basic reasons to choose a female partner to raise offspring with. For the gene-spreading done outside of the partnership the requirements usually were way lower. Usually "willing female" would take the #1 spot in the list. Most other things were optional...
Again nowadays this has changed. Medical science has evolved, so that certain physical preferences are outdated and lose importance. But as women get more independent from "financial supporting males" and have changed some of their preferences, man have to - or would have to, as many aren't able to - adapt.
But in 3d art breeding and family usually has little influence on the art itself, which makes the "it's all about the looks" approach from both, male and female, artists the rule instead of the exception. It would be a great conversation that would go on here - I completely agree with your sensibilties regarding both the primal motivations and the changing intraspecies agendas. I love what you wrote, and the obvious complexity and context that drives these interactions. Well said.
I believe your last line accounts for the bulk of the impulse (gotta have that good looking model) sales, but would add that the also-mentioned 'character appeal' is as much a draw to those trying to tell believable stories (vs create appealing standalone stills/portraits) with plausible non-perfect but appealing characters.. This is an extension of your comment, not an argument.
There are many great comments, products, and techniques in these forums that discuss ways of dirtying up props, and humanizing these perfect models we collect, purely for the sake of believeability.
For me, the draw of the recent HD morph releases is that the wrinkles and bones that press through our sacks of skin are somehow needed, to really 'sell' these human creatures as being legit (uncanny-valley stuff).

sy-victoria-4-and-michael-4-clones-for-genesis-8LOL
FSMC doesn't like it because they only wanted to use it on skimpy clothing, and it was made for heavier coverage clothes. If you want to use it on bikinis, no, it's not going to work great, but it's great on long sleeves, pants and skirts (i.e. the things that are shown in the promos).
Mind you, Valzheimer does a great product, I'm not arguing with that.
I "don't like it" because it doesn't work as advertised. Maybe a change to the name of the product is in order since it only says "SY Victoria 4 and Michael 4 Clones for Genesis 8" which implies it works on all clothing, not just the types shown in the promos or specialized clothing items.
To add to this, the reason these clones do not fit the clothing well is because the shapes do not actually match V4 and M4. They are extremely distorted. This means they will only work for clothing where you don't care if it remains the same distance from the body in the fit as it was in the original. It also means they cannot be used to transfer morphs. This may work for some people. For the vast majority, a "clone" shape is understood to actually line up with the original figure.
I said it in a previous thread, and I'll say it again: the purpose of the distortions is to achieve specific movements of the cloth. Moving verts one way in a clone moves them the opposite in the garment.
Yeah, that's...what I said. Because the clone shape is distorted, parts of the clothing that would originally have been close to the body will NOT be close to the body on the fit. The clones push out parts of the clothing. This looks "okay" on clothing where you can't see how it lines up with the body, especially loose clothing. On tight clothing and low coverage clothing it does not look okay.
comic filter for Daz renders?Rather I hope that 3D comics develop a different style and look altogether and keep traditional hand drawing artists and 3D artists both in the biz. There's market enough for both types of art, I think. :)
I'm tryin, Diva!

ETA: The styles are driven by the algorithms, and what's possible (for me) to achieve via automation (as opposed to starting with a strictly defined look in mind)
Tools (and the underlying paradigms) like the new X-morphs package will help ease the creation of these exaggerations.
Greg, I like each of your variations almost equally - such differing flavors of the same base are impressive and inspiring (and overwhelming, when you consider the infinite options...).
Thanks – it’s tons of fun to play around with all the styles. You’re right - Xmorphs should be very useful to a lot of people. I wrote partial morph scripts years ago that I’ve been using in my own work. I may still release them as a product at some point as they function differently than what I gather about the new product, but it’s not a priority at the moment.

Getting priced out of this hobbyI'm a fan of the 'less than $10 rule' too. If it's more than $10, I'll probably pass on it unless it's a super useful morph kit with lots of options or something.
As for the 40% off sales on artists back catalogs, yeah that doesn't move me. 60% maybe, 70% possibly, and if it's higher than 70%, yeah then I'm looking real hard at the stuff in that sale. I'd say that 70% off fast grabs, I probably only take advantage of those maybe 5% of the time, as most of the stuff doesn't interest me.
If something falls below $5, then it's definitely on my radar, and if I can grab it for as low as 40 cents down to even 7 cents... like in the last blowout sale, well let's just say I have a lot of pre-Genesis stuff thanks to those sales. And Free...yeah free with no strings (prereqs), well who doesn't love that?
The ONLY reason I'll consider 30% off on a new item is the dynamics of a sale built around said item (i.e what killer deals can I get if I buy that item). Otherwise, unless it's real cheap, yeah not gonna move me at all. It'll show up in the back catalog eventually (with rare exceptions), and I can wait.
Along those lines, yeah there's the 'buy 5 to get 10 free sale', but that sorta kinda works out to 2/3rds off of everything if you think about it. I preferred the 'get 3-4 pro bundles for free' with the pro bunles sale (they dropped it to two in the last few sales, then went this bogo thingie route), but buy pro get 10 free is better than nothing I guess.
When picking my 10 free items in the BOGO sale, I sorted price high to low, and worked from there. 'Cuz otherwise those items were out of my comfort zone. But of course the last couple of items were mainly 'fillers' to hit the 10 item mark.
I definitely feel for you really really loyal Daz customers that already have all/almost all of the stuff offered as freebies in sales. There needs to be alternate options in that case, even if it's a lowly 'extra 10% off coupon' or something... Setting up the store to detect such instances might be a pain though. Detecting 3-4 pro bundles was possible with the early G8 pro sales, so maybe there's a simple way to add a 'counter' that checks out how many freebies are being made available to you Or not...
Also, NEVER buy Plat Club at full price if you can avoid it. It goes on sale often enough, you just have to be patient. I wish I could have grabbed it for 50% off the second time around, but 30% off was better than nothing (you see, Aiko 8 had just come out, and I had already missed out on Edward...) Not sure if 30% off Plat Club memberships in sales is the new norm, but it seems like it.
So yeah, I feel for you newer people (not that I've been there that long myself, slowly creeping up on a year and a half here). My advice to you is that you don't NEED Genesis 8, the earlier generation figures work just fine. Sales happen in the Daz store often enough, so be patient. And take advantage of the freebies out there (ShareCG, PoserDazFreebies, Rendo, HDRIHaven, etc.), just pay attention to the usage rights on those freebies when you are pondering whether to download them.
Heck, some people are STILL releasing Victoria 4/Michael 4 era stuff (mostly elsewhere) for Poser, which works pretty well in Daz. And waiting on the next killer sale is an excellent time to learn new things in Daz while you patiently wait for the next awesome sale.
The '14% cash back' (Prime) at that other store is a fairly strong motivator for me when looking at sales there... a similar thing here would be cool, but if it hasn't happened by now... just saying that it's a simple, easy way to reward regular customers. Oh, and they have end dates on all of their sales over there too. Makes pre-planning a bit easier...
That 14% reward thing helped convince me me to pull the trigger on Poser 11 recently (it was on sale). I'm now trying to learn Poser in my spare time, but in the meantime at least I can test stuff I'm making in Poser as well as Daz for compatability. Daz Studio is my go to, but it's good to broaden your horizons occasionally.
Like others in this thread, I'm hoping that we'll see more new stuff priced more reasonably in the future, but as long as enough people are willing to pay higher prices, well there's no incentive for Daz to NOT charge higher prices.
In the meantime, the prevailing advice is to take advantage of the killer sales when you can, and don't feel bad about passing on the ones that aren't floating your boat. And don't be afraid to broaden your horizons, there's lots of other stuff out in other corners of the 'net there that'll work in Daz, either out of the box or with a some fairly easy adjustments. As for stuff that is here, It'll most likey go on sale again eventually at some point, or just maybe it'll eventually become a Plat Club item...
comic filter for Daz renders?Personally, I think folks should think of new ways to tell a story; I rarely like 3D anime/manga, as it looks wrong. It can look good, usually when whoever is doing it isn't trying to recreate the 2D medium and failing.
I think we (in this 3D realm) are all apppreciating that very issue/opportunity. None of the folks around my non-3D life have *any* idea what's coming either - and I have a hellava time trying to describe it. Arguably, even if *we* don't 'see' it either, we know it's big, and we can see the possibilities.
Now I get trying to make it look like the medium; I can't draw, so anything that helps there is fun, but what I'm trying to do is create the look and feel without being a copy, but is also obviously still something done in 3D... No success yet though.
Anything that's too radically different from the norms of any medium seems to meet insurmountable resistance (ie. it's rejected by the market). Similarly, anything too close to the uncanny valley of imitation ("it's like a traditional comic, but somehow wrong") also is resisted. I think the success will come in a paradigm shift driven by something crazy-kool that breaks all preconceptions, or a migration that's similar to the long-term but slow trasnsformation of the typical web-page (remember the web-pages of the 90's and even 5 years ago...) vs the fantastic graphic-laden one-pagers we see today...
But I'm certain that we are collectively going down an uncharted road, but way too many of us are so busy trying to match things, that we don't realize we can change them entirely, or at least morph them... I'm certainly guilty, but figure I'm learning to crawl before doing the olympics...
Things like each traditional frame of a scene being an animated snippit have popped up here and there, but may actually be 'how it's done' in 10 years. Everyone loves the Harry Potter newspapers...
Exciting times for those who choose to take on the struggle/task of new media, vs replicating the old. Yet, the challenge of using these new tools to replicate the old is a fascinating artform/puzzle in itself (I love trying), and has will certainly be a safe harbor in the current marketplace for years to come (low risk, established acceptance).
Music is going through this same hurricane as well.

weightmap brush tool, should the purple and orange respond to brush?thanks richard.

theres nothing to transfer here. is starting from scratch.

New Method to add a Tattoo across SeamsThanks so much for the encouragement! Maybe with this method, some enterprising PA could create a product of alternative UVs for all the DAZ figures, and sell them for people to apply their own tattoos/what-have-yous to geoshells. A lot of folks out there can't afford programs like ZBrush or Photoshop, etc.

Projection paint in Photoshop is what I've always used for doing things across any seam. ZBrush also allows projection painting of existing images, but you need to up the subD a lot to get a detailed transfer. Also Blacksmith can do projection painting... but...
This is really kind of an amazing solution. Even with projection painting, you have the possibility of seams and you have to go in and futz, and if your texture compression is higher in rendering (for speed or whatnot), you can get some wicked seams there. Using a geoshell like this is really a great solution. Once you've saved the UV you can use it over and over too. I'm really kind of loving this idea :D
Show Us Your Bryce Renders Part 10mermaid010 , MelanieL, Horo , adbc , Slepalex: thanks you so much for your kind comments. Much appreciated!
MelanieL: transferring whole scenes from DS is seldom succesful for me either. I usually transfer one object at a time and use the merge function to bring them into a master scene. Great Alpine scene, especially the first one.
Alex: Lovely patrol scene with such excellent detail - reminds me of John Wayne’s cabin in the movie “North to Alaska”.
Oh - Happy Mother’s day to those Mom’s on this forum!
G8 eyelashes again, losing my mindHave you saved your new morph as a morph asset? If so check that you set auto-follow parameter on.
sy-victoria-4-and-michael-4-clones-for-genesis-8my technical expertise eludes any understanding of what you all talking about.
Basically:
- SY M4/V4 clones for G8 are optimized to get good result for some types of clothes, and as a result they work less well for other types. So some people are not happy with them.
- The clone morph is not exactly the same shape as M4 or V4 because adjustments enable better autofit. As a result, you can't use them to give G8 the same shape as M4 or V4, or as a basis for morph transfer. That was not what they were made for, but again some people are not happy.
Photo-real characters. A different approach. Some really great images here.
For me realism ultimately boils down to the quality of the texture. There are people who can do amazing work with lighting, shaders, and postwork / filters even using a generic texture. I am not one of those people. I've started using Facegen and I can't go back.
Take the Hayley for Genesis 3 for instance. https://www.daz3d.com/fwsa-hayley-hd-for-victoria-7
This character based on Harley Quinn as portrayed by Margot Robbie is a great figure. Lovely skin texture, finely crafted morphs. I'm glad I bought it. In someone else's hands it could probably look amazingly real if that was their intent, although a cartoony (ish?) version is truer to the character's origins. Just for fun I made a collage comparing some renders using a Fagen generated morph and texures. Do asymmetrical features add more realism? Maybe a little. Does a quality skin shader make a difference? Some. But ultimately it's the texture that makes it more realistic.
Quick question about Zahara Hair 2This hair was made as a loose afro. If you go on the street after a long day .. your hair will not look as you just came out from a beauty shop. Not perfectly trimmed. There are many afro styles around, with sharp cut look. This is not that type of hair. There are severeal hair shape includes, you can see the promo images.
But if you want a smoother look, there is another transparency map included and 3 transparency strength option. For example this is an Iray preview I attached, made with the 2nd transparency option and soft transparency strength.
The 2nd pic use the default transparency and strength but use a style which is total different as the default shape. This hair is more hair in one pack, because you can't find too many hair in the market which includes this many different styles, even updo with band :)
And as a bonus, If you have problem with any loose strands, just make a render, circle them and I will provide a morph to get rid of them. But note ... the other morphs will be still different, because those morphs are not just move here and there and style a little, but most of them change the strands very drastically. As I stated, I used the Trans 2, dialed the fun spikes all the way down which made it less spiky, and dialed in some thin soft which also helped. But you're right, this isn't the absolute round 'puff' with no spikes that she was looking for. I got it the best I could using the presets and dials.
How would your morph work? Are you saying the circle drawing would be in postwork? If so, then how would a morph work in postwork. I'm confused....as usual. LOL

G8 eyelashes again, losing my mindI am TRYING to convert a couple of G3 figures to G8, and everything SEEMS to be working except the friggin eyelashes, it is driving me crazy. I am using the G3 to G8 morph converter tool. I have followed the instructions exactly for sure definitely second time thru, base rez, zero sub, export obj with the morphs, use converter, new scene load G8, base rez, zero sub, morphloader, settings corect, load morph, adjust rigging to fit, apply morph, everything looks great, eyelashes working etc. Close Daz, reopen figue,. still looks good. Close everything, do same thing fro a second figure (different G3 character), everything working, yay, cool. Go back, reload first, figure, eyelashes no longer following.Gaaah! Delete morph, reapply morph, eyelashes following again, save, close, reopen, eyelashes broken. Load other figure, same thing. I am about to give up but I want to figure this out. If anyone has any ideas AT ALL I am all ears.
I am really wondering if somehow making the second figure is breaking them both somehow but obviously I have no clue.
Maybe theres a better way to do all this?
weightmap brush tool, should the purple and orange respond to brush?Weight maps aren't images, they are lists (or weights) mapped to lists of vertices, so UVs aren't a factor. A weight map can't be copied to a different mesh, like a morph it is wholly dependent on the vertex count and order, but like a moprh it can be projected into a mesh that is similarly shaped - that's what the Transfer Utility does.
I know Genesis means beginning but...Okay everyone, relax. People get all up in their feelings and get to emotional when trying to have a conversation nowadays. Sometimes you have to think about the avenue and try not to take things so personal. It's hard in today's climate, but it needs to be done nevertheless.
@Havos, you can't be responsible about how someone perceives a post. Someone is going to get offended off of the most sacrine-laced, totally tactful and respectful post. There's no two ways about it.
People don't like to be shown the reality of a situation when the option offered do not suit them personally. I was one of those people who would be frustrated about having invested in lots of pre-made content and still not having everything I need. Some of my images are very elaborate and to realize I can't achieve my vision, that I have to settle for something close to it...well yeah, that's more frustrating to me.
While I still have yet to fully grasp modeling anything, like I stated in a prevous comment, at least for me, it's becoming more about the art and less about keeping up with new generations and yet another character morph or pose or clothing that look similar or looks great but is very impractical.
I remember one time I was looking for a standard priest costume...there is a ton of nun costumes out there, from standard to kinky Mother-Superior types. But priest? You either have to chose a monk-like Friar Tuck rob or something like that. It wasn't until maybe a month ago I found one that I could modify on Renderosity. It's situations like that that has driven me to consider and conquer modeling (plus I have too much content and overchoice is a real problem too...lol).
