  • Carrara - where to next?

Thanks Wendy, yes, I left Blender off the list by accident but I have a similiar experience with it - a nightmare interface. Like it was put together by hundreds of different people with differing ideas - which is pretty much the case. Great open source project but I need something clean, simple, intuitive, powerful enough and visually based - Carrara really.

Has anyone imported carrara files to Blender with any success? It might be useful in that case as a way to transfer files to another program.

Give Blender 2.8 another chance when it arrives, probably in Q4. Its a huge update. Amongst others they are redoing the interface, and it will come with a Blender 101 interface persona, making it fall in line with other packages.

Current Blender has a steep curve, but it tops of at a certain point, and from there it gets easier. You’ll have an aha moment and it starts making sense. But the criticism of the current interface is valid. It relies a ton on keyboard shortcuts and thats a starters nightmare.

I actually love everything in the Pro Bundle, but Toon Dwayne 8 himself. >_<

Ditto.  For a male toon, i'd rather have had a sexy anime character.  I can't say I wanted a popeye looking character, but I got him just the same.

Double ditto.  Why can't we have a bishounen anime character?

I like a bunch of items in the bundle, but I'm kinda worried that buying the bundle will encourage DAZ to make another Dwayne figure.  The mouth has a weird twist, the height is bizarre, the upper arms are way too short and those Popeye forearms and hands make me shudder.  The dial to tone down the arms doesn't put the arms back to normal.  Even on Brandon, the arms are still way too off.  (I like Brandon otherwise, but the arms don't work.  Maybe using some of Dwayne's head morph along with Brandon will work?)

I was one of the many thinking Dwayne was going to be Dwayne the Rock not Dwayne the Toon.  Dwayne the Rock would have been bought and downloaded about 8 seconds after I saw the figure.

    Sigh.

    Girl8 and Dwayne8

Girl 7 for Girl 8,   50% Dwayne Body - 50% Atlas Body - Custom Guy 7 to G8 head transfer (that took me 5 flippin' tries and 6 hours to get right)

I know that the thumbs when posed, on my end, with my add on morph on top of the Dwayne default morph causes the rotations to be quite off.  Easily fixed in the Joint editor.

To fix the hands you can quickly do this by zeroing out your pose, go to the Joint Editor, in the hamburger drop down menu under the Tools once that the Joint Editor is active go to Edit> "Adjust Rigging to Shape" make sure all the boxes in the lower left corner are checked, not sure why that last one is always unchecked, it should be checked by default and then click the Accept button.  Find the Toon Dwayne Proportion ADJ right click on that and choose Edit and then go down to ERC Freeze.  That will bring up that dialog.  Just hit Accept button and you should be good to go for posing your figure with the Toon Dwayne Proportion ADJ applied.  Save your file so you have that ready to use next time until DAZ can release a proper fix....

    Thanks, RAM, will try that

  • Carrara - where to next?

    Hi All,

Recently a Daz help person confirmed to me that Carrara is no longer in development. I had surmissed as much, as many people on the forums have, but it was very disappointing news nonetheless. Carrara is a great, flexible program and something of a giant killer.

I know Carrara will continue to work for some time, but it is only a question of time before an OS changes breaks the program. It is an option (one could keep a dedicated machine, not update it and use it solely for Carrara) but given the large number of assets, models and resources I have, I would prefer to start moving things before they break.

So I am wondering what software people are planning to transition to next and if anyone has had success importing their files to a new software package?

I have tried MODO - it is a very powerful modeller but modeling is not my primary interest.

I have tried MAYA - but it is really a studio package that assumes distributed, specialist expertise across particular aspects of the software

I am trying Cinema 4D - that has a sympathetic UI and can import fbx files from Carrara but materials are altered and enviroments such as skies do not transfer.

DAZ studio is way too limited, has a baffeling interface, and relies on posing purchased assets.

I know there wont be a program that simply imports Carrara files entire - but as close as possible would be good.

Ideally the software should run on Mac and PC and allow distributed rendering between them.

If anyone has any experience in trying software as a substitute, I would be grateful to hear your suggestions.

    Cheers

female bundles are criticized as well so it isn’t just that this is a male only occurrence.

There is so little men’s content so people are disappointed when the base figures they want aren’t available or released and a niche figure is. That seems understandable to me.

Yes, they're criticized for not being a male release.   ;)

Five new male outfits were included in this release too, all of which can be purchased and used without Dwayne, so that's something as well.

Well, Redz did get my money this time, but then again, she frequently does. LOL I can always use more facial hair.

    Laurie

When I go to Redz catalog, I see "5 of 22," which includes today's facial hair product, hair from Mable and Floyd bundles that are in my wishlist, and the two historical hair products, also in my wishlist. She is definitely one of my all time favorite vendors, and I love all of her hair products. (I have several I bought from Rendo, before she became a PA here.)

I'm afraid Brandon without Dwayne isn't really a keeper. A great body, but the face is.... wrong. Click for bigger.

I wonder if the face could be improved on by dialing in the head morph of another character, or using a product like the 200 Plus morph pack…?

Also, Toon Dwyane comes with a Proportions Adjust slider under Full Body that gives him less exaggerated proportions. Less Popeye.

There is nothing about this option on the sales page! What other morphs/options does Dwayne have that aren't listed, I wonder…

I was going to comment that I'm on the fence about Dwayne, specifically because of the oversized hands/forearms. With Ollie, there are morphs specifically to adjust both the length and the overall size of the nose, and those morphs are listed on the sales page. I was hoping for similar morphs for Dwayne's forearms, but nothing like that is listed. I reqally think it could help sales if all the Dqayne-specific adjustment morphs were listed on the product page.

In case Daz is keeping track of our whys and why nots, this is again a pro bundle I'm only considering because of the two included hair products. With all the incentives to buy now, the cost of the Pro bundle isn't much more than buying the two hair products separately. That means I'm paying about $9 for the other 9 products. I could have gone with some cheaper Top Toons, but the four I chose are products I've wanted but couldn't justify at higher prices. 80-86% off works for me. LOL

A banner for an additional 20% would clinch the deal without any more thought, but so would a list of all the shape morphs on the product page, if they include a morph to dial down those Popeye arms completely, (making the hands and forearms proportionate with the rest of the body.) I like that they are available, I'd just like to remove them for the times I want to mix Dwayne with other characters.

There is actually a dial that helps with that, which I discovered AFTER my cussing and screaming in ZBrush to normalize them again!  lol

Okay, it looks like there is a way to fix those arms included. A shame that wasn't listed on the product page! Thanks for the screernshot, @RAMWolff.

I decided to go for it and buy it. But I can't locate the morphs inorder to apply them to the pants. (see attached) Does anyone see what I'm doing wrong? I'm 99% sure I installed them right. The only thing I can think of is that the instructions said

"Specifically, this product contains a folder called My Library.  You must copy the files from this folder INTO the folder called My Daz3D Library."

But the .zip file didn't contain a folder called My Library. Just Data and the read me text. I looked in the Data File and didn't see My Library either.

Looking at your screenshot, you are not looking for the morph in the correct spot for the projection morphs, as these morphs are not found in the clothing but rather under the figure itself, under Actor, this is a projection morph.

Go to parameters and select your figure (Character), then under "Actor", and the rest is explained in my original post.  You can follow the below images I took for this example, the first is Gen 2 and Genesis is the same, second is Gen 3, it has a slightly different path.

I installed the morphs using an installer that I found on sharecg, "daz content installer", I know the installer works for pc I don't know if it works for mac, but if you like I can check my folder and see how it installed.

Here is a link to the installer which I think is perfect if you buy or use 3rd party content from zip files: https://www.sharecg.com/v/71453/gallery/10/Software-and-Tools/Daz-Content-installer-from-Zips

"Strange - a lot of people waits for male characters, but when such item appears - just complaints."

+1. Why would a vendor want to put the immense amount of time required to create a male product when those asking for more want something so specific that there's very little chance of pleasing them? Mixing toon head morphs at very low values can really bring personality to a figure - I've done this for years with my own character, and now I think she looks bizarre without a toon morph -  so I don't think Dwayne is completely useless to male figure renderers. I also still don't get people who are yelling for David or another Freak when you can make your own with any of the the dozens of morph sets also available here. These oddball characters are important releases specifically because you can't duplicate these results with existing morph sets.

I've got a bigger problem with this discussion though - why the need to tell everyone that you're NOT buying this? Whoop-de-frickin-doo, I'm not buying it either because I only render fantasy females, but I don't feel the need to criticize something that I have no intention of purchasing. DAZ could release a David 8/Lee 8/Jason Momoa 8 megapack and the release thread would be full of complaints that there's no Jason Momoa 7.

    Why the need?

I think everyone who comes to the forums is most certainly a terminal Daz addict, and both dread and eagerly look forward to release sales, perfectly natural for them to be disappointed if they feel they're missing the festival (if even if also a little relieved). Thats a mixed up cocktail right there of both sweet and sour

Well created a nice morph, fixed the arms to my liking.  Was going to try to save it but upon saving out the FBM, even though it was supposed to JUST save the morph info from ZBrush the resulting file saved out was the translations to resize the limbs and the base morph I worked off of Dwayne.  So I guess it's one I keep to myself.  Sorry folks.  My old brain can't keep all this info straight sometimes!

  • Is it possible to create morphs for HD characters?

I know this doesn't answer your question, but have you tried something like these two products?

    https://www.daz3d.com/zone-smoother-for-genesis-3-female-s

    https://www.daz3d.com/ultimate-natural-bend-morphs-for-victoria-7

I own them both and I have to say, they do come in mighty handy for bendy poses.

Thanks.  I'm not a big fan of products like this tbh as in my experience they never quite deal with the problem I actually have.  I find a morph tailored to fixing the issue works better, and I'm OK with making them usually.  Just this HD figure is causing me grief.  Nonetheless, I might be interested in the natural bend morphs if they were heavily discounted.

  • Is it possible to create morphs for HD characters?

Are you sure there are no attachments to the figure?

    Like eyelashes.

No separate eyelashes if that's what you mean.  i did have a geograft attached initially, but removing that was the first thing I did, with the intention of reattaching after creating the morph.  Same problem with the character sans geograft.

However, from what you say, this should not be impossible in principle for an HD character, so I'm not completely wasting time and effort trying to do it?

  • What do we WANT from the next male G8 base?

Asian men. Not just one. Multiple. Many. I have tons of Asian women figures of various ages and they're getting angry because they have no fathers or boyfriends.

Pacific islander men. Adding them to the Gen 8 gene pool would be amazing. It sure worked for Jason Momoa and Dwayne the Rock Johnson. Here's a Pinterest board I found that can provide some inspiration..https://www.pinterest.com/mandyjokegirl/polynesian-men/?lp=true

Middle and Near Eastern men. Just search Pinterest for "handsome near and middle eastern man" and you'll find a whole lot of what we don't have here.

Yes, I do want attractive figures, both male and female. Quirky and distinctive is good. They don't have to be perfect. Today's Brandon is probably my favorite male character ever.. By dialing Brandon's head down and other heads up, some really terrific things can happen. Having a variety of the above-described characters who would likewise mix well would be amazing and really do a lot for the Gen 8 male.

I don't care that much about body types because I have morph packs and dial mixers for that. But high-quality faces from around the world--that's what I need.

I also want good clothing and accessory packages. Stuff that kitbashes nicely, either with or without shaders. Not stuff that's crazy specialized. Versatile items with options.

Yep, I will buy the heck out of that stuff. I even bought the Dwayne pro bundle just for Brandon. I wish Brandon had been the base figure with a bunch of diverse morphs for him.

  • What do we WANT from the next male G8 base?

I'm getting a strong impression that apart from the sitll MiA official Asians, most of the people in the forums at the very least seem to want a new male base to be a stylistic counterpart to one of the female bases. Particularly once you drift a little farther across the spectrum from "stylistic" to "stylized".

No problem if the male base comes out first, like Ollie/Edie or Floyd/Mabel, but the end users do seem to want both genders to look like they could exist in the same universe.

Which makes every kind of sense if you are doing *anything* other than pinups with only one figure (or multiple females).

I've always been a bit grumphed that we never got a female counterpart for Morpheus. But the situation is much worse in the other direction. We keep getting standalone females with no counterpart.

Of course, if you are sticking to realistic figures, then a good collection of morph packages is your friend. But it's nice to get some professional-level modeling in the target morphs that you are combining.

  • Problem with Cain for G3M & G8M

It's a full character with mats:

    • Cain for Genesis 3 and 8 Male: (.DUF)
      • Cain FULL Character Preset
      • Cain Head Apply/Remove
      • Cain Body Apply/Remove
      • Cain MAT (Iray)
      • Cain Eyes 01
      • Cain Eyes 02
      • Cain Eyes 03
      • Cain Eyes 04
      • Cain Eyes 05
    • Textures Include:
      • 31 Texture, Base, Specular, Bump, and Scatter Maps (2048 x 2048 to 4096 x 4096)
    • Daz Studio Iray Material Presets (.DUF)

BUT according to the file list it doesn't have any gen mats, and it doesn't say anythin about a head morph: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/53169/file_list

(If you have X-Morph, you could of course simply split up the morph.)

BeeMKay - Cain does include a seperate head morph AND body morph.  Something went wrong with the installation files if you don't see them.  I am reaching out to DAZ to find out what went wrong.

Today I purchased Cain and installed it with DIM, the Head Morph dial is still missing.

I retried with Daz Connect, it's still missing.

  • OT: New Nvidia Cards to come in RTX and GTX versions?! RTX Titan first whispers.

This page has a description of NVLINK:

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/rtx-2080-ti/

No mention of memory pooling. Surely they would tout that if it was a feature. So yeah I think it'll just act as a better SLI and not double memory, hence the lower cost too.

That page and almost every other preorder page also fails to mention anything about Tensor cores. But we now know that Tensor is indeed a part of the die, and they have a big role what is taking place. So just because this page lacks that info is not an indication of a lack of memory pooling. If you watch the conference, the CEO mentions NVLink and memory pooling right before jumping to name prices of the RTX cards. That's some weird timing to talk about NVLink if it isn't going to actually do what he says for the gaming cards. He pretty much said the same words I did, that the NVLink'ed GPUs are like single big GPU. We don't have confirmation, but we also don't have a denial. We need to get this question answered outright.

...the only time he mentions pooling memory resources between two cards is when he brings up the Quadro 8000 (10,000$ ea).  As I mentioned there is different pricing between the Consumer RTX NVLinks and the Quadro/Tesla NVLinks (see attachments below).  For the GeForce series it mentions multiple card bridges which pretty much seem to be configured like as the old SLI ones.  They may allow faster data transfer between cards than SLI but nothing about pooling memory in the description.

It makes perfect sense why the GeForce series would not have memory pooling as one, do gamers rally need that much VRAM (?), and two, it would seriously undercut the Quadro series (particularly the 2,300$ RTX5000 using two RTX2070s which would provide more CUDA and Tensor cores than the single Quadro while offering the same combined amount of VRAM [16 GB])

I was kind of amused by his comments comparing 2070 performance to the Titan-X/Xp as the latter has 4 more GB of VRAM and again, I see VRAM as the single most important feature for GPU based rendering (the more the better).  If your scene winds up being say 9 GB, suddenly that old 12 GB Titan-X or Xp is looking pretty good even if it is "slower" than the 2070.

I quite like the Dwayne shape but in the promos he looks very angular to me. Lots of fairly flat areas around the cheeks, chin and chest with sharp creases at the edge. Not so much a toon, more like an old fashioned video game from when computers could only render a few polygons per object. I'd like way to round off the edges a bit. I know you can do this by dialling down the morph and adding other morphs but that dilutes his basic shape.

But some of the other stuff in the pro bundle looks very good both for Dwayne and more realistic figures. I haven't been through the matrix of addons and extras to see if I want any of it and how much it would cost it I did. Not a definite buy for me right now but I am thinking about it.
