New DS Filament Render Engine
Here's one of the frames (and of course uploading the frame here also lowered the quality a bit lol /DOH!):
This looks good! May I ask you if this is a pure Filament render, like load a character, add clothes, pose, lights, render? Not counting animation. Or did you use any of the new Filament products or maybe your own custom shaders that you are so great at creating?
I adjusted the mats myself, as they are Iray mats.
Just as I wouldn't expect 3DL mats to look decent in Iray without some adjustment (and vice versa), one shouldn't expect Iray mats to look decent in Filament without adjustments. :) They're all three different render engines.

Novica & Forum Members Tips & Product Reviews Pt 13Thanks, @Novica - the video was definitely interesting and gave some good info.
One thing the video glossed over is in the light shadow section. He demonstrates several things about point light settings then moves on to a discussion of shadows. BUT he did not say that he switched from using a point light ot a distant light. I struggled for an hour trying to get a shadow from a point light. I had to watch the video 5 times before I saw that his display now showed a DISTANT LIGHT.
@barbult - yeah, it was a very quick skim into things, but I did hear him talk about how, atm at least, filament doesn't use the full resolution of hdris, so they degrade in filament renders (and most hdris aren't exactly ultra crispy, clean and sharp to begin with) and also, no emissives yet, and no subsurface pathtracing on people so basically, people will be rocking it in filament like 3Delight from the M4/V4. Still unanswered was whether the "filament" products do or do not work in Iray rendering. I'm thinking that, with the known limitations already clear to me, I'm just not overly inclined to be an early adopter and buy up a bunch of filament content when so many of the things I love about Iray aren't there yet. Love the real-time render aspect though, so looking forward to when this matures further!
I haven't purchased any of that new Filament content, either.
Novica & Forum Members Tips & Product Reviews Pt 13@kindredarts Would you like to discuss your experience with Filament? Answer a few questions if folks have them? (He's made some of the products.)
I'm on a good sleep schedule so I'm gonna to head out, did get internet back right at 10pm. (As promised.) Watching Tampa getting 3 feet of floodwaters so far, they are at high tide. Oooh, water rescues starting up now. Stay safe Floridians! My sister is in Jacksonville and she'll get 40mph gusts, but thank goodness not a hurricane coming in.

(ETA: "-era" after M4-V4)
New DS Filament Render EngineShadows work for certain light types, not for others, and there are limits on the number of lights. Hair has two issues - enabling dForce/Strand based hair (which is essentially the same as any other preview emthod) and the transparency mapped hair being overly transparent (which can be adderssed via surface settings, as discussed up-thread).What is the solution for trans mapped hair being too transparent in Filament? I read/re-read this thread a few times and can't find the answer. Thanks.
I think that's something that needs to be worked on, for right now though front light (no backlight) helps a lot.
or geometry hair be it strandbased or Zbrush etc
Yeah, strand-based hair helps a lot. Just thicken the strands. :) If using Poly-Hair though I also find that using darker colors can help.

New DS Filament Render EngineThis is the first release of Filament in Daz Studio. If Daz3D doesn't abandon their work on it and run off to the next shiny thing, Filament will probably be improved. I think it is already improved from the first Beta that included it. If it doesn't work for your workflow, don't use it. All the other choices are still there. We have no right to tell Daz3D what to spend their time and money on. Daz Studio is free. We get what we get. Daz3D is really a content brokerage. With all the bridges they are providing, I'm kind of surprised (but happy) that Daz Studio development is continuing.
+1
Daz Studio has just added a new PREVIEW OPTION draw style that people can use only IF THEY WANT. And they can even render with it IF THEY WANT TO (because it renders crazy fast animations), but it's 100% OPTIONAL to use and some people are freaking out. lol It's hilarious. I'd go make some popcorn but I'm having too much fun playing with Filament right now. lol It's a preview draw style. That's all. You can use it to render with if you want to but I think most people will use Iray. It's not meant to be a replacement for Iray. It's cool to have options. No one is forcing anyone to use Filament if they don't want to. I think people who do animations will enjoy it (I'm enjoying it) and I'm sure it will be improved upon with time. :) People can decide for themselves if they'd like to use it or not. Options are nice to have. Give it a chance or don't, no one is forced to use the new preview option nor is anyone forced to render with it. :)
Iray Preview PC Reboot?Ok - so it seems to be consistent now. The reboot happens whenever I go into IRay preview mode - usually within seconds if not immediately. That suggests hardware to me - faults that harden usually point to hardware. I'll have to try to get away with withe Filament ot IRay spot render because it is not yet crashing while using IRay in render mode.
[EDIT] I seem to be able to get away with using the IRay Spot Render tool so there's a workaround so long at the fault doesn't migrate away from the IRay preview mode. I've set the Max Samples low (200) so that I don't have to wait too long.
Is this a blank scene or a saved scene?
I recently had with beta DS 4.12.2.60 saved scene that reboot when I turned it to filament. The filename was longer in length than I nromally use. Pulled up a previous save with a long name, but not as long and it did not have that issue.
It is any scene. It happens when I start IRay Preview Draw Style. If I remain in OpenGL Viewport Draw Style, I don't have a problem. It has not rebooted during an IRay render either. I don't use Filament other than a few tests so I can't say for certain that it doesn't happen in Filament but it hasn't during my tests. IRay Preview Draw Style is pretty consistently rebooting now though.

New DS Filament Render EngineI rendered this animation with Filament in just under 14 minutes. It would have taken my machine over 2 hours to render it in Iray.
https://player.vimeo.com/video/478310569
Edit: Vimeo lowered the quality by a LOT. It rendered out much more clear and crisp. Here's one of the frames (and of course uploading the frame here also lowered the quality a bit lol /DOH!):
New DS Filament Render EngineThis is my first animation experiment with the new DS Filament Render Engine in DAZ Studio. It rendered in 6 minutes for 180 frames in 1920 X 1080. I added a little pixel motion blur in After Effects.
New DS Filament Render EngineCan someone please confirm if the google software mentioned in the links below is the software that has been integrated into DAZ Studio?
What is Filament https://google.github.io/filament/
Filament for Android/MAC https://github.com/google/filament
Filament Release Notes https://github.com/google/filament/releases/tag/v1.9.0
New DS Filament Render EngineI don't know if the "DAZ Studio is free" argument works if the product they're selling depends on DAZ Studio to work. But I did notice that adding Filament didn't seem to stop anything else from working.

Shopping cartOk. I come to the web site this evening, I see the new stuff called Filament or something. I have to sign in because I'm no longer signed in like before. No biggie. I find something I want to pick up and I hit add to cart. Then I notice that I have 10 items in my cart already. I'm like OMG what did I forget to buy....and I'm looking at all the items back at reg price and I'm like I know I bought that. I check my invoices, sure enough I bought it. So, why is it still in my cart? Is this DAZ's way to get more money? Hey, lets slip the contents of their last purchase back into their cart and they'll never know it...Or is it *gasp* another glitch. They ought to change their name from DAZ to Glitchy...seriously, this is supposed to be a professional web site, a glitch here and there spread out over a long period of time is like well, ok it happens. But this site is constantly having issues every day...I know nothing will ever get done, we'll keep throwing money at them.
New DS Filament Render EngineI think I'm going to end up getting filament items to play with just because of the novelty of it. That's the same reason I got a Chromebook.
Today Filament option on Mac is gone. Who else have this problem?Yesterday, if I were not dreaming, I could see and use Filament and that drived me to buy all Filament products. I'm afraid to say it wrong but if anybody got the same problem like me, please confirm
were you using the beta and did you update to 4.14 by some chance?
I don't know as on Windows but apparently Mac not supported yet but for all I know the previous beta might have
I've never used betat. That's a thing I'm so sure.
New DS Filament Render EngineI'm very excited about filament, but my heart just sank when I saw the filament products. No! I would have to buy products to make the products I own look right? Will new characters/environments etc. come with filament-compatible textures etc., or worse, will they be special add-ons? Cha-ching!No, you don't NEED to buy any products to make products you own "look right". It's just like the other render engine options (Iray and 3DL) you can buy Iray and 3DL lights, shaders, etc to make things look nice in those render engines, but you can also make your own lights and shaders in Iray and 3DL. Same with Filament.
I have read every page of this thread opened every image and watched every video linked from the 14 pages and thought this is just a learning curve this has to get better, but it didn't, because the product is simlpy inferior to the users. Maybe you guys are too close to the forest to see the trees but this product is not flattering. You guys are great at what you do and this product does not showcase anyones skills here, because the product itself is below what you guys are capable of. Despite the fact you are all doing great, considering the product, even Kindred's video was insightful, but with all due respect, it the guy had one hand tied behind his back trying to showcase something that does not showcse well. I doubt animators will use this when there are so many better options. The work displayed here does not do you or the others justice because the product is inferior to your skillset. The product makes professionals like yourselves look amatuerish which is a far cry from what you guys are. I would never have chosen Daz had I seen this and thought the work represented by using filament was what Daz Studio was limited to. It pushes people towards Blender and other programs. If you read the pages here it is really a dozen people trying to make something shine that can't. Look at the pages with an open mind and pretend I did all of the work displayed here and tell me you think it would be worthy of some kudos. Again it is the product. You guys are fantastic, but this is not going to fly. I am not sure if there has been a change in decison makers but I can't believe DAZ is letting this thing loose. I once made a thread about Daz going south, but I only meant a different direction as in new store etc but this is really Daz going south in the typical sense of the word, taking a turn for the worse.
Absolutely correct. Frankly, I think it's an embarassment. A real-time render engine for Daz is a good idea. But they should have chosen one that already has lots of documentation and support. Who the has ever heard of Filament before now? Nobody. An Unreal Engine integration would have been cool. I know we have the bridges, but they don't translate materials very well.
I don't understand why companies like iClone are running circles around Daz in terms of their progression. It's really disheartening.
