  • New DS Filament Render Engine

I'm not seeing the 'Physically Based Render' option in the DrawStyle dropdown like the tutorial showed. Any suggestions as to how to add it? Right now I've updated but can't seem to use the Filament engine for some reason

It's not yet available for Macs, if that applies.

Well drat. So I guess that means Filament isn't available for MAc yet either?

Edit: See the "Real-Time Rendering" section on this post. Here it is in brief:

    Real-Time Rendering

    • Added a real-time physically based rendering option to the DrawStyle Options menu in viewports
      • Filament (PBR) - Implements the Filament renderer as a DrawStyle
      • Requires: Windows (currently), 64-bit, OpenGL > 4.1

    Excellent. Thank you!

  • Filament tutorials/shaders/lights?

I had to manually painted some areas , especially the one closer to the scalp and the roots of the others other way it flipped back and forward , one time open scalp then closed again ....

it will only works when the white color is solid  RGB 255   RGB 000000

LOL just tried it but no it didn't work for Filament either

It is this way since 5 years in DS and iray ... Cutout Opacity , is not transparency .. it is alpha channel  2 colors ..

Unreal engine is not Filament in DS ..  nothing much to compare here..

    interesting

that is how I fix a similar but nowhere near as bad issue in Unreal engine and iClone

I posterize the opacity map in Gimp to 2 levels so it is only black and white

it did not occur to me to try it in Filament for some odd reason

  • Iray Preview PC Reboot?

Do you have an old Daz Studio version, like before this started to happen?   Would be interested to hear how that would work for you.

Also, maybe post what you were doing with Filament opacity.  DreamLight's Instant grass gave me trouble in filament only, and that would likely have opacity  and/or transmap variables.  I could test what you were doing on my PC to see if I have trouble too.

Have a spare PSU for troubleshooting my stuff.  It's handy the odd time.  But in your case, just replacing parts with new stuff can get expensive quick.  So still think something like a stress test would be good.

Put in my search engine key words "PC best stress test benchmark"

    • One free program that was recommended by first site i checked was: https://www.jam-software.com/heavyload
    • The tool carries out complex calculations to simulate the heavy load on the processor, and employs 3D rendered graphics to simulate a high load on GPU. Also, users can allocate a specific amount of memory to see how the system performs with scarce memory

Just suggesting this as a type of program you may want to use to test your system, and not necesarily this one.  You would have to dig through each test to see if it ramps up power needs like Iray in DAZ does.

I took your advice and I've just now downloaded a system stress test called OCCT which has a specific Power stress test which includes the GPU. Lo and Behold it failed immediately. So now I don't know for sure whether it is the PSU or the GPU but I am still inclined to think it is the PSU (maybe wishful thinking because I am still saving for a new GPU).

    Filament?

Yeah, I loaded a Point Light, Linear Point Light, Spot Light, and a Distant Light into the scene pane and only the Spot Light, and a Distant Light show up on the drop down. I never understood why the point lights don't. Does anyone know why they don't?

Part of my problems come with my desktop sometimes, if I push it with simulations, then try to find the right HDRI and then light set combination, the computer will start a weird 'dance' around the scene. Generally my warning I better save if I haven't, close and reboot my computer, then reload DS and the scene. And lose a half hour or more. On my laptop, if I stress it out, and then try to go to Filament or try Iray Preview, it flat out crashes hard. And of course I always have forgotten to save a scene file before that point.

On another note, may I recommend https://www.daz3d.com/iv-30-must-have-poses-for-genesis-8-females bares a second look. I have found the poses to be unique and possibly useful for other purposes than the ones they suggested. Besides a lot of work that went into them.

  • Filament tutorials/shaders/lights?

It will not works until the alpha map is not pure black and pure white .. if you have any gray scale in the maps other than black and white it will looks transparent showing the head and that is the same in iray, but iray render ( shadows , GI and AO) and you don't see it this way , transparency is not a physical based material , you need to edit the alpha map of the hair and set more contrast to remove the middle tones . It will works as I made some adjustments to my older transmapped hair

Cut out opacity channel is for 2 values , black and white : 2 colors

and for your second question, Menu Bar/Create/New filament options node , click on it in the scene tab  and adjust the AO under Parameters

    Two questions:

1). I see Filament renders here where the hair looks almost as it should in Iray but when I try I get a shiny, semi-transparent blob which shows the cranium and/or objects behind the hair. How to make hair look realistic in Filament renders?

2). Nostrils and other areas which should be dark. When I load a human figure in a Filament screen she looks like she has an internal light shining through her nostils, etc. I think this has something to do with AO but I don't know where to adjust it.

    Thanks.

Thanks but just to clarify (please excuse my stubborn ignorance):

    1. (Hair opacity): Edit the Transparency maps to increase the contrast to eliminate shades of grey.

    2. (Nostrils): Play with AO settings. I have to say that I did this before asking the question originally but couldn't improve the nostrils (or the glute crack). I'll try again.

  • New DS Filament Render Engine

I would love to see someone develop a stylized shader or 2D style toon shader for Filament to get that anime-esque style of animation/look.  Most of renders are done using pWtoon shaders.  Iray doesn't work for me (I've mentioned this in several other posts).  Unity has a beautiful set of stylized shaders, but upon installing Unity, I realized it is a live game render engine and not a frame still-shot renderer (so I can't produce my web comics).

Upon reading earlier posts here, I can see that Rawb mentioned that it was really aimed at webcomic and game style animation renders.

Maybe this Filament isn't going to 'do it' right now for those attached to Iray, but for me and my old Dell T3500, it is a godsend and exactly, what I was hoping DAZ would develop in time.  I haven't had a chance to jump into it yet as my M-F job has me bogged down.  I will this weekend.  I'm seeing renders in this thread and they have me very excited to use it.

I came here prior to making some purchases because I want to see how others are doing with it.  From what I'm reading, it looks like this is what my aging PC needs very much.

I think "cell shaded" is the word I'm looking for.

Can you give a sample?! I don't really know what you try to go for. But i imagine PBR shaders already exist for your kind of style i think.

A style similar to a Miyazaki animation, maybe like that of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.  I had this style done with pWtoon in this video I created using DAZ:

    https://youtu.be/m-EoWqtgKcA

I want to be able to produce that same cell-shaded effect using filament, but with the Filament lighting that I see for sale here.  (I'm not sure how to post vids here from YT using an iPad, so please let me know if this works)

    Have you tried that??!
    http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/artzone/pub/tutorials/dazstudio/studio-toonshaders

Um, yes, many years ago.  Thanks.  But since the installation of Filament, no.  I have to wait until this weekend to give it a try.  I had asked about combining 3DL shaders and Iray in Filament, and one of the DAZ techs said that Filament is not based on shaders.  I have no idea what PBR shading is.  I've never dealt with it.

dunno if https://www.daz3d.com/pwtoon would work in Filament as I don't own it

I have pwtoon and tried it and tried it out and they do not seem to work at all, and Visual Style Shaders does some funky stuff to the texture if tried on Genesis 8..

And that's what I was afraid of.  Hence, I asked if there would be a creation of Cell shaded shaders or stylized shaders for filament in the future.

Unfortunately so, and well the only way I see someone will to specifically create a toon/cel shader for Filament.. But that would be a long ways off, as there is so much that needs to be done to Filament first.. Like being more robust and useful, than what would be seen I would imagine by many as just a gimmick and nothing more..

I'm sure it will become more developed as time goes by.  Thank you for testing those two shaders though and letting me know the results.  I'm going to try and see if I can play with the cell shaders that are DAZ based that gniiial suggested.  I've never tweaked them or really dug into them to full capacity.  It's also been years since I've tried.  I think I was on DAZ version 4.5 the last time I played with them, then gave up and settled for visual style shaders and pWtoon instead.  Of course,I didn't fully understand the functionality of shaders, having just left Poser 4 (which to me was an utterly confusing and complicated program to figure out even with a vague instructional book that I had purchased in college).

DAZ is a pretty user friendly program to me, and I'm not much of a tech (pfft, not hardly).   Maybe I can figure out with trial and error, how to utilize filaments shaders to behave like cell shaders.  (Might be a pipe dream, but hey - dream big!  Amiright!?)

Maybe maybe not being open-source it depends on whether people want to contribute to its development or not

I'm also hoping it won't be long before we see it on MacOS

This is the part where the Price is Right losing sound is played.

Ah well. Here's hoping it's sooner than expected for us Mac users!

I upgraded to Big Sur and, right now, I would really really like Daz not to crash on launch so I could use my new iMac instead of my old MacPro.

It wont even work on Catalina for me. Big Sur is an issue, yes. but Catalina I cant even download the program anymore. So now new mac users cant use the program full stop. because downloading it isn't an option.

I used Daz on Catalina and it worked fine. Now DIM and DazStudio just crash. Daz had access to all the Big Sur's beta builds and yet their software doesn't work with the release version. Take Affinity, for instance: today I updated to Big Sur and to Affinity Photo, Affinity Design and Affinity Publisher (the older versions still worked). UnReal, Unity and Blender worked with Ctalina and the same versions still work with Big Sur. DaVinci Resolve 16 (pre Big Sur) also keeps happily working. Office (whose code base certainly is not for the faint of heart) keeps working. So, why not DazStudio?

We obviously don't know - perhaps it's a Qt issue, perhaps some other factor such as one of the licensed plug-ins. All we know is that, unfortunately, Big Sur is not currently supported. All I can suggest is keeping an eye on the change log.

Filament is not set up to support custom shaders in DS, at present. It gets PBR materials translated from the PBR Iray Uber Shader and uses a pre-built shader - there is a list of supporte properties here https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/6200861/#Comment_6200861

  • Filament tutorials/shaders/lights?

We used textures with a lot of light build in and ambient occlusion , later we painted the nostrils dark brown , the problem is when you use Enviorment in Filament the light passing through the objects and the AO it produce is not fine enough to cover the nostrils , I suggest to use less IBL intensity and add Direct Light with shadow or use spot lights with shadows , or paint the nostrils dark on the map . There is another way as I already suggested in my early post  BENT NORMALs integrations , that will flip up the lights in the nostrils but I guess only for people that know how to do that .

Just a question How where shadows integrated in Gen4 (V4M4) textures, please ?
