  • Fast Grab DAZ are getting pretty slack

    Richard Haseltine said:
Please drop the "people like you" stuff - different people will have different wants and needs, that isn't something they should be criticised for.

Good point, it is getting personal.

Yes, there are some older products that still use (or used) the old Wise installer tthat does not work Mac's using certain OS's. If you purchased products that you couldn't install, you could have returned them within the 30 days for a refund without a problem.

It is also the reason DAZ made the decision to go with zips rather than stick to the installers.

One can always (with old installers, I think, because I cannot install Gabi for V5 as it says I don't have Evolution Bundle, which I do have) unpack the installer, make a package and use it in future reinstallments of DS. That's a normal thing an IT guy would do in case of such desire. I wish DAZ had BOTH options. Sometimes using an installer is easier, sometimes you prefer zips.

    * * *

In my humble opinion, old does not mean worse. New does not mean better. Preteen is rather old, but I'd kill for most of her characters Thorne/Mada/Sarsa made. Genesis doesn't have such cute faces no matter how much I adore this figure. What I'm going to tell is just my personal opinion, but Preteen characters often look much more realistic and believable than Dawn, which is 2013 (so if the newest meant the best, you'd be on cloud nine with her). Kozaburo's hair freebies were designed for Victoria 1 (!) and still they look fabulous for me, especially if you change the textures a bit. You can fit them with not much trouble or just download free refits, they are widely available. Ratorama makes wonderful refits of hairstyles that were designed for Poser folk like Jessi and the refits look like a hairdo you can find in DAZ, Rendo or RDNA. After Genesis, A3 is my favourite figure, even though she's quite old.

Remember that new doesn't mean better (look at a certain outfit people were so disappointed with after it came out, while many of them collected special points to get it for free - and compare it to its normal price). If you insist on using the newest, it's your choice and really, trust me, I don't mind it at all. Just don't try to make DAZ get rid of all "vintage", "retro" or however you call it.

As of labels, they work good for a single figure chosen. I'd appreciate an option to choose SEVERAL filters. Let's say, Genesis has so many shapes available that fitting a hairstyle designed for V4 or M4 is a piece of cake (the programme usually does it for you). So I want to find hairs that fit easily - I choose filters: Genesis, Victoria 4, Michael 4 - I should get a large number of stuff that's (by default, we can always try to translate, scale and whatever):
    - Genesis, V4, M4 compatible,
    - Genesis only compatible,
    - V4 compatible,
    - M4 compatible.

I hope such feature is going to be implemented soon. But if you only need a certain figure, then you have no problems with choosing a proper filter, I think.

  • RRRR Story render contest *closed*

I finally read everything and looked at all the renders. Wow! The stories give an added dimension to everyone's creativity. In no particular order:
Jindi, welcome to RRRR! Your first one is so cool. I love the story and the renders.
Ken, you are really ambitious this time. I love your continuing story, even the tender moments, and your always-wacky sense of humor.
KaribousBoutique, the poem is great! It has to be hard to be a Dazaholic when you have children to take care of. Nice to have a sense of humor about, and they do grow up eventaully. I loved the writing in Guardian story. The images went beautifully with story's mood.
Jaderail, it is so wonderful to see your renders again. I really like these, and good story!!
Totte, both of your are great. Your are a born story-teller. I especially like the second & third images in the second one with the action and explosions, the the second image in the first one - "will work for content" LOL
Sasje, the Magic Gate story was perfect. Just enough said and wonderful images.
Novica, the newspaper articles are a hoot!
hawkonthewing, nice story and I always love your images. I look forward to the next installment.
Zawarkal, I love how you did this one. The images were perfect with the story, and the story, well, it beautifully illustrates an aspect of your cosmology (I couldn't think of a better word.)

Thanks, KaribousBoutique and Totte. I always love a compliment.

    Here is my next pull:
    Victorian House
Michael 4 for Genesis 2 Male
    Sky Deck
    Mafioso Unimesh Fits
    L'Orangerie
    Genesis 2 Female Body Morphs
    Billboard Poses for Michael 6
    Classic Deco

Really strange to get three newer purchases. I usually get older stuff (that I don't want to use but turn out to be fun anyway.)

Warlock looks great by the way. How did you create him?

Warlock is Cyborg Model 4, available here at DAZ. Neat thing about that figure is that its fully compatible with Michael 4's poses and clothing so he's got a few pieces of armor from various other sets. He's using the Bone Hair, which once upon a time was sold here at DAZ and is currently nowhere to be found. The rest is just a seamless techo filter from Filter Forge applied to all his surfaces. The trickiest part was the eyes - they are generally all over the place, and so I drew some cartoon eyes in Photoshop and transmapped them onto a flat plane parented to his face. He's got about 10-15 different eye expressions, some of which also include cartoon mouths just for fun. They all need to be manually adjusted but I'm ok with that.

Here's a look at his evolution in my runtime over the last year. Please note how indescribably creepy he is without the transmapped eyes. The one on the far left is Klank with a similar seamless texture map but far less pizazz.

"Who?" says my cousin. "I don't got no partner an'...hey! Now hold on a second, dere! I know what you're t'inkin' an' I ain't dat way!" Den it dawns on my cousin all of a sudden like, "I knows who you is. I've seen you! Yeah, you usta hang 'round wit dat old coot Scrooge, right? Yeah, I t'ought dat was you. You're in da wrong house, buddy. Ol' Scrooge, he lives next door."

All of a suddens like, da ghost, he gets all apologetic and stuff an' real embarrassed, toinin' all red 'n' everythin'. My cousin, he feels sorta sorry for 'im and invites him t' supper. Dey have some toikey, a few brews an' a few laughts about it until da ghost excuses hisself t' go visit dat ol' coot Scrooge next door. After takin' the ghost out inta da street and showin' him da house next door, my cousin goes back in his house, has a few more brews an' goes t' bed.

When my Pop usta tell me dis story, always 'round dis time a'year, dere wuz always had one question dat I never got answered...did dat ghost ever find dat ol' coot Scrooge? Never did find out...

After takin' the ghost out inta da street and showin' him da house next door, my cousin goes back in his house, has a few more brews an' goes t' bed.

  • Morphing Skeletons

If you're talking about This Skeleton, Try these things:

First of all, the hiding of everything but the skull:
    Try this first:
Double-click the top line of the figure. Probably called "M4 Skeleton"(?)
This will get you into the model room with the whole skeleton. Either by selecting or deselecting through the menu, select just the skull and all of its parts, then go to Selection > Select Invert With M4, this takes a while (a lot of polygons to select!) after you make the command, so just wait a second or three.
Now go View > Hide selected.
This should make the rest of the skeleton entirely invisible in your scene.

Note that this methos doesn't always work on some of the latest, new figures - and possibly some older ones too. So I'll also cover the option to use, should this not work:

If the above doesn't work, do this, which will:

Select "Model" and enter the Texture Room (paint brush icon, upper right)

You'll see a list on the right of all of the shading domains of the figure. The only ones you want to keep are the ones for the Face, Head, and any other parts you might need, like teeth for example. So go to the first allocation that belongs to something that you don't want to be visible and click the little arrows on the far right - for changing the shader. Scroll to the bottom of the list of available shaders and select "New Master Shader".
That shader now looks gray, and has a generic name. You might want to change the name eventually, but not just yet.

Double-click that new shader you've just put in place to bring it into the main working window. Change "Alpha" to "Value 1-100" and leave it set at it's default value of zero. Change all of the rest of the channels, including color, to "None".

Now simply drag this new shader into all of the domains that you don't want to see. You can do this right in the list on the right, but you have to do them each, one at a time... so don't even try looking for a faster way! LOL

Actually, if you really know all of the names of the domains, I think Fenric has a plugin that will allow you to simply make that above set of changes to all of those domains at once. But anyways, just place that new shader and then you might as well name that shader (back in the assembly room, in the Shaders tab to the bottom right) to "Invisible".

Now you can go ahead and Edit > Remove Unused Masters > Remove unused objects, Consolidate Duplicate Shaders, Remove unused Shaders
to clean up your file a bit.

    ===============================================================================================

Now, I'm almost certain that you may INJect any M4 morphs to this Skeleton as well - to apply those morphs, so that the Skeleton matches the shape of M4, but I might be wrong on that. Try it because I think you can:

Select the top line again: "M4 Skeleton"

Go to your Content folder and double-click any shape morph INJ files that you might have for M4. For example, if you have the M4 Morphs ++ pack, just go to Poses > Daz's Michael 4 > Morph Injections and double-click Morphs ++ M4

If it works at all, this one will tell you. It would actually be better to narrow this down to only the morphs for the head to keep unnecessary build-up of data that you just don't need or want - I'm just trying to set up an easy way to tell if the INJ works on the Skeleton - I'm really pretty sure that it does though.

Let me know how this turns out.

  • Morphing Skeletons

    DAG NABBIT!

I just purchased Michael 4 Skeleton to use just the skull and wanted to morph it to an alien-like skull.

    I find two show-stopping problems:

    1) I cannot make the rest of the skeleton disappear. I am usually able to turn visibility on and off of purchased items in Carrara. It appears to have no effect on the skeleton.

    2) I cannot morph the skull at all, other than to shrink and grow it's overall size.

I saw there was a morphing tool for M3 skeletons. Will that be forward compatible? I'd hate to waste even more money.

  • Possible problem with Michael 4 for G2M

    Slosh said:

Let me start by saying that I'm really getting into the whole spirit of G2 and our latest member. I'm also generally happy with Michael 4 for G2M, but I have noticed there are some... imperfections. So far all the clothes I have have tried fit great. Boots are pretty good too. The biggest problem I have run across is with gloves.

I've looked at multiple sets of gloves and none of them look great around the tips of the fingers. I've attached a a G1 and G2M picture using the Cyberpunk for M4 limbs.

I'm also attaching a G2M and G2F image of boot autofits. So far it looks like the autofit for G2F is generally better quality, but I have seen some instances where the G2F fits are less than optimal

Basically I'm wondering if other have similar experiences as my own.

Just to let everyone know... I have made a new autofit template specifically for Michael 4 Gloves that shows a vast improvement to the fit even without using a smoothing modifier. I would like to point out that the smoothing modifier still gives the best results because it forces the glove to fit the shape of the hand wearing it. The fit still causes some distortion in the original mesh, particularly in the fingertips of the ring and pinky fingers, but this is the best I have been able to come up with.

I also updated the autofit clone itself, reducing the amount of poke-through some have still experienced when not using a smoothing modifier. I was not able to solve the issue with capes and long coats. Unfortunately, because they follow the legs, there will almost always be issues with that when using autofit.

Lastly, I have updated the preset "Set M4 UVs" so that it does not set your shader back to DAZ default. I have submitted the updates to DAZ and hopefully they will be in your account shortly. When the update goes live, I will post here again so that those who do not use DIM can be notified to check your Product Library.

    Thank you

Scene 2: Took a Wrong Turn

    Pulled items in Scene 2:
    819 Udane Hair
    200 DM Talca
    168 Dauntless

    Also used:
Lady: Genesis 2 female with Nyssa character
    SI Medieval Dress
Knight: Michael 4 with Beck Character
    Jai hair
    Trees by Merlin
Ground plane with Dimension Theory's Shades of Nature grass
    Light Dome Pro Revolution
    Sylia thought for a bit. “Ok, set it to...1000 B. C. E.”
Sid saluted and set the controls. He punched a button, and the dumpster erupted in a flurry of noise and flashing lights. The noise was enough to make Sylia think her head would explode. After what felt like a lifetime, things because quiet again. Sid, unfazed by the whole event, cheerfully climbed the ladder and opened the hatch. He threw it open, looked around, spread his arms and sang, “We're heeeeeeeeeeeere!”
After dragging herself to the side of the dumpster and pulling herself up, Sylia took a look around. She had to admit, they were not in the lab. However, she had real doubts the time was anything close to 1000 B.C.E.
“Sid, your timing unit's off. This looks a lot later than I told you to set it.”
Sid looked around. “How can you tell, Sylia? All I see are a bunch of fields!”
    “Try turning around.”
“Well all right, but I highly doubt...” Sid saw what Sylia had been referring to. “Oh. Uh...sorry...didn't...uh...mean to interrupt...”
The people made no response, and seemed frozen in fear.
“Leave the poor things, Sid. Just figure out how to get us back with the timing unit out.”
Sid nodded and started muttering to himself as he calculated. He shut the hatch and started up the controls, and the noise began again. Sylia swore and braced herself.

  • Help needed, please: M4 Skins Auto Converter For G 2 Males

    Rogerbee said:

From what I can gather, the G2M has the M5 Philip texture which had the EHSS, M6 and M6 HD load with textures that use the SSS Base shader. G2F has the V5 Bree texture which uses the EHSS and Gia, V6, V6 HD and Josie all use the SSS Base.

The converter does something odd when it loads the textures and I wouldn't use it till Slosh figures out what went wrong and does an update. The clone UV's for V4 and M4 are fine.

    CHEERS!

Sorry if I'm coming to this too late. The Set M4 UVs preset does indeed remove the shader information and resets it to DAZ default. The V4 equivalent actual removes all textures as well. Currently, I have not been able write a preset that does not do this, although I have tried. The preset, if opened in a text editor, only has settings for UVs and absolutely nothing about a shader, so I don't know why it changes it. I think the script would need to read the current shader, then re-apply it afterward. I will work on that, as I too find it frustrating that it changes the shader.

Edit: I figured out the problem and fixed it, but will have to resubmit the product before you will get the changes. In the meantime, I created a set of UVSetters for Genesis 2 and uploaded them to ShareCG: UVSetterGen2

This freebie includes: Base Male, Base Female, Gia, Girl 6, Michael 4, 5, and 6 and Victoria 4, 5, and 6. Please note that the presets only work if you already have the UVs in your runtime. Michael 4 will not work without having Michael 4 for Genesis 2 Male, Victoria 6 will not work if you do not own Victoria 6, etc.

  • Clothes and Props Not Loading

Actually I was a little too emphatic there - although it's almost always the materials (and sometimes lights and cameras) that have the scroll you will come across the odd case when a figure or prop has it - for example Victoria and Michael 4 where it is used to launch an option dialogue and some props and figures where it loads the item and then applies the default materials. But in general only the Figure, Prop, Hair and Scene folders under the Poser Formats heading load models, all the others are settings of some kind.

There are actually a lot more combat armour-type suits available for M4/V4 than Genesis! A shame many of them haven't been updated, because I'd love to use them for Genesis. Searching for science-fiction will probably find you quite a number with relevant footwear for them.
