  • XTransfer Module 1- Genesis 3 to Genesis 8 Morph Converter (Commercial)

I got an unusual message running the script, trying to ONLY transfer the Gianni 6 morph I had previously converted using GenX2 (hadn't read the forum up until now because I had no other issue transferring GenX2 morphs before this).

The message is a pop-up error that says "Select a source figure, and then a target, to use this action. Both figures must be based on triax technology" (screenshot attached), along with log.

  • required verse compatible when it comes to the models

I am interested in buying a new female model. In the description, it says compatible with genesis 8 female but under required it says Darcy 8 and a facial morph program. I have the facial morph program but I don't have the Darcy model. Will it work with any Genesis 8 female even if I don't have the Darcy 8? I am pretty sure in the past I accidentally bought something like this and it worked fine. Or am I misremembering and it won't work?

  • The "Powered by Hot Pockets" Complaint Thread

Well, I don't bite for the "Giving Tuesday" thing but this year I did actually make a small donation to Wikipedia to slightly assuage my guilt for umpteen times a day for the last many years, using the incredible service it provides, and never giving anything back.  But mostly I Scrooge through this season not answering unrecognized phone calls, tossing begging mail, and avoiding store bell ringers.  And of course Google and YouTube can take care of themselves without me needing a subscription.

Google and YouTube certainly CAN take care of themselves.  YouTube is part of Google anyhow.

And Wikipedia isn't a charitable donation.  It's more of a volunteer support model, which I'm usually happy to participate in.  But lately, I've become concerned that Wikipedia is not unbiased.  The worst thing for all of us is for Wikipedia to succumb to bias, so I will be withholding my donation this year to see if they are willing to reverse course.

I was interrupted while making this post.  Police Benefit Association called again and for some reason, despite me knowing it was an unrecognized call that I was going to hang up on, I answered and after about 3 "Hello"s...

This is common.  They all use call routing software for efficiency in their call centers.  The computer calls you, and when it thinks a live person has answered, then the computer rings an available sales agent at their desk.  It usually takes about 3 "hellos" to allow the machine to complete the transfer and bring a salesman on the call.

...and just before I was going to terminate, the live person finally got on the phone and opened with "Boy, you're harder to get ahold of than the last pickle at the bottom of the jar." (Really?surprise)

That's actually a very funny colloquialism!

And although I groked the simile it didn't make me smile.  So, after he said who he was with, I gave a quick "Sorry.  Not interested.  Bye! [click]"

Smart man.  The so-called Police Benevolent Association, at least in my area, is not at all associated with any law enforcement agency, nor any benevolence, either.  In this part of the US, it's likely a phone scammer.  If you don't believe me, just plug this into a Google search box.

    police benevolent association scam

I'm not proud of my phone etiquette, just tired of beggers too lazy to come to me in person to get the door slammed in their face.devil

If the search above doesn't cure you of your phone ettiquette shame, then you should just give me all of your money right now.  I promise I'll put it to the best use possible, magically removing all of your shame along with all of your money.  wink  cheeky

This model is available on Amazon in the US... I got mine from Home Depot... it has a fairly strong grip, but is not spring assisted or anything... At Home Depot it's around $20... I got it for my little wife, so she doesn't have to use a stool to reach stuff on high shelves... also it's great for pinching children.

It's called the Unger 36 inch (91.5 cm) Nifty Nabber Trash Picker...

You can't change lightbulbs with it, but you can grab a can or pick up delicate stuff too... I don't have arthritis so I can't really say how it would work for someone who does, but my wife's parents have used it a bunch of times and like it.

It has a return spring that keeps it open, but it's just light enough for that, there is no struggling against the spring.

    I have that one!

    Dana

I have two of those and two heavier-duty ones.  They are great when I'm having a bad knee or bad back day.  I can pick up my dirty socks and undies without pain!  The worst is when I drop a piece of paper or a plastic card on the floor, ow, ow, ow!

"...Chris  mess   drop  down   your  bills    Press one     or  press two   to hang up to listen to  this message   again    press three..."

Now try reading that in an evil 1980s cyborg voice and remember the gaps are long pauses.

"press two to hang up"?... that's a new one... also not sure who Chris Mess is... sounds like some weather forecaster... "Now here's your local tornado forecast with meteorologist Chris Mess..."

It might have been "press 2 to be added to our do not call list".  In the US, various state legislatures are going after some of the worst telescammers.  They may eventually be held accountable for finanical penalties if they don't leave alone a person who has put them on notice that they are to stop calling that person.  So I've begun hearing exactly that, a prompt to press a button to be added to their Do Not Call list.

If saving it as a morph asset doesn't stick, then there really is some ghost in the machine that is causing the issue. When you open Daz Studio do you have it open to the default (empty) scene, or a saved scene? There is obviously something that isn't looking for, or isn't finding your revised .dsf file and/or the required thumbnail. I have never had the issue, so I can only guess at what is going on. Maybe Chris Palomino or Richard can answer this: is it possible that the brickyard is interferring with Studio accessing the revised file?

Very nice, Saph-thank you for posting those!

John is coming around, finally.  The base skin is almost clear of seams (Found one on this render, but fixed it with post work for now).  Have the base skin materials set up, the eyes, lashes, fibermesh brows and colors done.  The second set will be for the older version; will be adding scars, etc. with aging details for a complete look.

So here is his base morph (younger version) and skin. :)

  • How do I fit footwear on cloned V4 figures?

FSMDesigns ....I wasn't talking about using the auto-fit but rather the transferr utility.

after I posted I realized I've never tried transferring morphs for footwear  with the same method I usually use  for clothing.....I tried and it does work with no distortion however there's a problem with the toes and feet poking through....with boots the feet can made  invisible in the scene panel but with shoes the toes are a problem unless the soles are extra thick to hide the toes or the feet are kept flat on the floor....or if the design of the shoe allows it the toes can be made invisible.

here's what I did if anyone is interested and as I mentioned earlier  this method works well with V4 clothing.

    1.load shoes/shoe/clothing item with GF3 unselected

2.select shoes/shoe/clothing item and fit  to GF3 choosing "unsupported" and "none"

3.select GF3 and transfer V4 clone morphs in the shaping panel

4.go back into the scene panel and select the shoes/shoe/clothing item

5.go to  Parameters/Actor/Generation X  and change GCF setting to 0%.

  • XTransfer Module 1- Genesis 3 to Genesis 8 Morph Converter (Commercial)

Okay, I picked this up on day of release, but was half-way across the country at the time. I'm now playing catchup.

I've built a separate content library specifically for conversions. So far it's mainly been used for clothing conversions, but I intend to do character conversions in it as well. Consequently, I have a few questions of what I'm going to need to have available in *this* specific library. Since this isn't my normal character library.

I gather that I will need to install clean copies of G3F&M in this library. Will I need clean copies of G8F&M as well? Will I need to install whichever characters that I want to convert into this library as well? At this point I'm thinking of DAZ base characters,or straightforward PA characters, but what about dial-spins that I built myself? Will copies of these also need to be installed before conversion? I understand that this might preserve the original copies in case of glitches.

What about after conversion -- assuming that the conversion goes satisfactorily? Will I be able to move the newly converetd characters into my main character library, so their dials will be in with the rest of my morphing and character dials, or would it be safer to leave all converted items in the conversion library?

I don't believe having clean installs of any base characters is needed in the morph destination folder. I did not need them.

Okay, then, something else is obviously going on. Have you tried ditching your step 8 and saving the slider using the normal Morph Asset(s) instead of save modified assets? I'm wondering if the problem lies with the latter - I'm leary of using it because there are other things that it wants to "update", such as my G8F that I haven't changed, without any option to select what is affected. It just seems a little riskier since the user has little control over what it does. I realize that using the Morph Asset(s) route means that you have no batch processing, but at least it works. I would suggest that you submit a bug report on the issue and see what develops.

  • It's not exactly raining men....

I used to work in retail for years, and I have to say, it really is supply and demand.  If you walk into any major department store, you're going to notice--at least--50% of the floor space is devoted to female focused brands (Cosmetics and Women's Shoes getting priority).  In general, women vastly outspend their male counterparts. That is why more floor space is available, so there is more variety to purchase from.  3D creation is entirely different than mass consumerism, but the business model is pretty much the same.  DAZ is going to push all it's marketing and production time into producing content that sells well and sells regularly.

Published Artists is a different bag...if the artist is full-time, part-time, hobbyist, etc.  If the artist is a full-time 3D content creator, then that artist will also need to become a business person.  S/he will probably create things that will pay the bills.  Part-time and hobbyist, I'm guessing, might just create whatever they like and are inspired by.

I'm sure DAZ has user statistics (gender, age, length time, etc), so they know their consumer base.

In the end, it really depends on the power of the purse.  Are consumers buying the male content just as much as the female content?  Are they buying it at full price, half price, super-duper cheap price?

As a consumer, I would love to see more male focused content.  And I greatly appreciate the published artists that make morphs, transfer utilities, poses, etc for both figures.  It shows a smart business model, because they aren't ignoring a potential consumer base.

@riversoftart, Thank you for all your wonderful content!  I have tons of stuff from Gen2/3 that I needed transferred over to Gen8 and you made it flawless and easy.  And thanks for sharing that consumer data, very informative!
@oso3d, You are a darn good artist!  Very talented!

do 3d coat and marvelous designer do the same thing?

i dont understand how clothing meshes have such perfect quads,
i cinch in a waist and it becomes tapered quads chaos

starting to think i could make some use of zbrush.

3D Coat is a sculpting, retopology, uvmapping, painting program.  One example of a workflow would be to insert a clay (voxel) sphere, use sculpting tools to make it look like a skull, then use retopology tools to overlay a low poly mesh with desired edge flow.  You can then create a normal map that calculates the distance from your low poly mesh to the original high res sculpture.  You can then uvmap and paint the low res retopology mesh.  Then export the lower res retopology quad mesh, along with the normal map and your painting maps.  Load in your program of choice.

    - I am currently at the very beginner level of 3D Coat.  I would like to start with a low poly mesh modeled in Carrara or Hexagon, export it to 3D Coat, convert it to clay (voxels), sculpt more details, then use retopology, uvmapping, and painting.  Then export the model and maps for use in rigging, posing, animating, and rendering software.

Marvelous Designer is a dedicated clothing creation program.

Diomede, congrats on getting 3D Coat!!! Sweet!

Misty, I think a lot of those 'perfect quad' clothing items are Marvelous or something similar. I seem to have minimal success with those in my work. Aery Soul is a classic example of really well modelled clothing if we need them to follow morphs and look cool doing it, because there are plenty of polys where we need them. The mesh in these cases tends to truly form around the shapes of the figure, instead of a blanket of even polys draped over.

I certainly don't mean to offend, however, because there are some things with those even quads that work really well, and some the other way that don't... so it's a feel-as-you-go thing.

When I was making my own clothing for Genesis (very short stint in time before I decided to just buy my costumes! LOL) I started with subdividing and dynamically extruding a cube, as I often begin with modeling. I keep shaping and subdividing until I get something that fits and, yes, at that point the quads are still quite uniform in a lot of places.

Then, before subdiving further, I'll soft-select shrink the mesh in areas where I need more polys for greater detail, stretching polys larger in areas where I don't need as many. Then 'sculpt(?)' the edges of the polys to form loops where the item will benefit for things like shape morph following, etc., So then further subdividing will build more polys in those higher detail areas, leaving the rest still quite uniform.

Then I look at stuff from these Greats that sell amazing clothing at Daz3d, and realize why I buy their stuff. But I still enjoy doing it for fun - and even to actually use if I get it good enough.

The upper right image shows soft selection to start adding (in a very simple, newbie manner) to the cuffs, and you can see I didn't do that anywhere else on that item yet - still in uniform quad mode. The left one was a simple, fun test and the lower one was just a first test of me using Genesis 2 in Carrara (I didn't make any of the clothes for that one)

  • I give up.

I've found it best to install Freebies into a separate library

    Especially for  genesis character shapes.

A misconfigured morph can affect your base figure, a common result is the base figure loading with some morph fully on be default, these can be hard to track down if you install a lot of them on your main library.

I learnt this the hard way, took me ages to find the culprit that was giving all my Genesis 2 females a bad case of pinch-face.

  • Darcy 8

The problem with themed bundles is that they lack a hook to snag buyers who aren't interested in that specific theme. That's why the Pro and Starter bundles are always anchored by the character morph. A bundle of themed content without a character to anchor it, will sell to people who are into that particularltheme. But it won't sell anything like as much as one which has an actual character to apply the theme to. Even the little PA bundles that we see from time to time, are nearly always anchored by a character.

The PC used to do theme bundles which weren't character based, and they were reasonably popular, but at PC prices people will buy things that they might not at "normal" prices. And at that there was a lot of whining in the forums from people who had no real interest in the current theme.

(I would happily line up for a bundle of refits of some of those classic PC themes. Particularly the 1930s or 1950s stuff.)

Good job Daventaki. It looks like any of Darcy's add-ons are quite cute with no Darcy involved.

Hope someone can help, everytime I load a basic gen2f I get these errors in my log file and I donot think these should be trying to load with a basic genesis figure, how do I remove these errors?  This is a fresh start of DS 4.12 Beta and a fresh load of genesis 2 , following is the errors I receive in log.txt.  This is also causing a problem using GenX2 to transfer morphs to G# so I can then use XTanfer to G8.  If anyone has a solution it would be much  ppreciated, I have tried uninstalle and reinstalle of G2 and G3 and all GenX modules

Very simple to send the high heels to hexagon over the Daz Studio / Hexagon bridge.  Load the offending shoes in Daz Studio, set resolution to base (smoothing off), use the FILE menu to send to Hexagon, adjust the heels to taste, use Hexagon's FILE menu to send back Daz Studio.  The morph menu will appear in Daz Studio.

A quick search for making morphs for Daz Studio will yield several more tutorials to fill in the details.  Tutorial authors include Josh Darling, SickleYield, and Winterbrose, but you can find others that might suit your taste.

Here is a thread dedicated to listing Hexagon tutorials if you want more help on that side of it.

  • Creating a unique morph to change the G8F

For the morph, you need to work with low res. I would keep your morph work separate from other work such as creating high definition details.

On a copy, you can add subdivision levels. This mesh will be unusable back in DS, but you can create things such as pores, wrinkles, etc. and then bake normal maps from these and use them on the morph you created and imported into DS.

  • What was your first DAZ purchase, and how long ago?

The first order still showing in my order history is dated July 4, 2002.  It wouldn't have been my first purchased based on what it was, so presumably I ordered something prior to that.  I think I ordered Victoria1 on a CD, but not certain anymore.  I no longer use Victoria1 or Victoria2, but still regularly use Victoria3, Michael3, Aiko3, the original Freak, and Genesis1 figures (which also make use of Victoria4 & Michael4 materials and some of that generation of clothing.)  Autofit only works under certain circumstances (a great purchase and a good tool for some things, but can't be used for other things) and attempts to transfer V4/M4 figure shapes to G1 didn't work for some reason I cannot figure out, so generally I make no attempts to recreate figures in newer generations and just use what that generation already has available.  Currently I don't even use anything past Genesis1, although I may make an exception for one or two purchases or freebie items in the future for one-off characters or creatures for a single drawing if appropriate (hasn't happened yet), and I've kicked around the idea of using a recent figure's head with better expression options of the newer figures in conjuction with a collar on older figures but haven't really thought that one through yet.

Transferring shapes requires a script / plug-in (example: "Genesis Generation X2"), and auto-fit really only works well if you have the appropriate "clones" for the other generation(s).
For example, if you want V4 / M4 clothing to fit Genesis almost perfectly, then you need  "v4-and-m4-shapes-for-genesis" ... there are "clones" or "shapes" of each generation (including V4 / M4 clones for Genesis 8), from generation 3 through generation 8. Most generations have clones of themselves for older generations, too.
Also, each of the main Genesis 8 "DAZ Original" characters includes clones for both male and female for Genesis, Genesis 2, and Genesis 3 (so if you buy one male, and one female, your Genesis 8 figures can wear anything made for Genesis, Genesis 2 M/F, Genesis 3 M/F, and their own gender of Genesis 8).
One of the things I like about DAZ is that ability to mix and match items (and characters) from multiple generations. wink Yeah, it takes buying the clones and the shape transfer scripts, but at least it's possible without manually re-fitting everything through a modeling program. smiley

  • Creating a unique morph to change the G8F

Morph will only work on the base level mesh. Without vendor toolbox that lets you create HD morphs, the only thing you have to use to create the fine details on the figure is make normal, bump and displacement maps. That's assuming you want to render in daz studio of course.

  • Creating a unique morph to change the G8F

I dont want to be a character vendor. Only make a customized G8F for my own usage.

I start watching video on morphing and I create a morph for the whole body starting from the low res G8F mesh.

    It works fine. BUT ....

Working on the base mesh does not allow to have fine details (wrinkles for example).

As I cant find information on howto, here are my thougths:

    1) can I work on highres mesh exported from DAZ to create my morph ? only for "big" details. I assume this morph can only work ind DAZ on the highres G8F mesh ?

    2) once I sculpted  the "big details",  I can subdivide the mesh used to create the morph and add fine details (wrinkles and imperfections) and generate a normal map on the the mesh used to create the morph. ?

    I use Blender
