  • Filament bring out the Renders

I did a test animation with the free Laughing Santa animation ThreeDigital gave away as a PA freebie. I still have a lot of work to do on my film compositing skills. Merry Christmas everyone!

We all had to start out at some point when learning animation. I think your doing just fine smiley   Cute santa smiley

Thanks. There are defnitely issues with it, but I'm proud of myself. I definitely need more practice. I think being able to use filament for test animations at the very least is great because this was 300 frames and it took practically no time to render at all. It would have taken forever to render with Iray and even 3Delight would have taken a long time on my system. With filament, I can actually render out the animations fairly quickly so I can learn new skills, both in Daz Studio and in HitFilm.

So it's as I had previously stated - there's no real issue between Filament and the operating system, it's entirely a matter of the application not being up to speed with the current technology.
Which is understandable, to a point. You want the tech to have the most compatibility in as many directions as possible.
But Quicktime 5 has been available for almost 20 years, and has been superceded by numerous versions since, so I admit I have questions about the decision making process.
Again, I'm sure it'll be handled. But I would like to suggest that "bringing the technology up to modern standards" might not go amiss as we move forward.

    Sigurd,

I definitely like the smaller hands and feet on this character. Looking back at some of the early postings in this forum about hands and feet sizes I built my own morph fix that resides in the AME folder. It basically scales down the hands and feet using the Hand and Feet Real World Propagating scale sliders, a small foot twist, shrug the shoulders up slightly, and then adjust arm length. You can ERC freeze and save a new property, or save it out as morph asset. Either way works equally well and saves work when starting from scratch. Mine exactly matches whatever % AME I dial in, I just dial in the fix at the same %. Depending on the character you can slide the fix in as much or little as desired.

Regarding the Filament, I too have had trouble swapping between Filament and Iray. The work around that seems to work is to go to Texture shaded in between. Don't think we are the only ones experiencing this difficulty. Seems to have something to do with Filament using the processor instead of the NVIDIA card. That is down a technical area I have no knowledge about!

I have been working and experimenting with emulating the AME on the G8F platform using 3 different vendors products! It involves  a LOT of my tricks behind the curtain, but seems to be at a point where I am happy working on the G8F platform again. Might post something or some comparisons if folks are interested. leemoon has inspired me to go back and play with the Brute a little more. This is Scott Mainz's older brother John. I basically removed the previous body used for Scott and replaced it with John for The Brute. I chose John as he was built on the Brute but had his feet and hands scaled down to a more believable scale. Please let me know what you think.

P.S. this is using Filament as I has serious trouble getting Iray to render after using Filament. Has anyone else had this problem?

I did a little test render of Santa in filament with the free animation of the Laughing Santa we got from ThreeDigital. Once problem I had was there is a script you have to run you do the animation. This script doesn't seem to work if you install through Connect. I had to uninstall it and reinstall with DIM to get it to work.

It's not a great piece of filmmaking, but I'm learning new skills in HitFilm so that's always a plus. I managed to figure out how to get the text to move across that screen. Yay! Merry Christmas, everyone!

  • Problem with filament render engine.

I just updated one of my computers to the Daz 4.14, it is an older computer, windows 8, and filament is not functioning. The filament option is there just above Invidia Iray option, but it is grayed out, and will not let me select it. Can anyone let me know how to resolve this, or if it can't be resolved? I would really appreciate it. Thank you

Have we gotten any update on whether or not Filament will be rolling out into DS for Mac OS, and when?
I know it's Winter Holiday Season, so I'm not expecting it before the new year, but it would be nice.

Not really, but I guess that is in the same batch of fixes as the fixes for macOS 11.

You're probably right, but I don't see why they'd have to bundle the two. Filament tech works just fine on current OS X builds, and the problems for Daz as listed appear to be SDK related, not any real issue between the technology and the OS. That reads as "making Daz get the two to work nicely together" more than anything else.
I know it'll happen, I'm just a little impatient because I want to give my (yikes!) 5-year-old laptop a bit of a break now and again.

Filiament requires Qt 5, Current DS is built on Qt 4.8

  • Question about viewport speeds

I doubt if it is worth upgrading beyond 64GB since windows 10 has a memory compression feature and also SSD swapping if fats enough. and it will be hard to fill app that memory with any scene which also fits in your GPU memory. also, Daz is just a single-threaded application so it can t use modern CPU properly.

It is unclear if you complain about OpenGL or iRay viewport responsiveness, as if your OpenGL viewport is running slow you need to turn on all optimizations .

the texture size should not have any effect because it is all handled by GPU. and it probably will just eat up your gpu memory without affecting performance.

also you can try filament viewport which seems to be faster  but has to be turned off before you start rendering in iray and save your work often because it tends to crash

The problem for me is that daz is really slow when I try to select nodes and models  I guess this is because all Daz content is stored on the plan HDD and for some unknown reason Daz is trying to access HDD every time I click something and attempt to use IK requires absolutely unreasonable time.

...yeah, but it wouldn't have been able to get it for 27$  Been on my wishlist for a while, and I just need it to expand into texture creation for my needs. It has all the basic tools I need for map creation and I can optimise them for Iray.

Crikey I'm still on the 4.12.0.47 Beta as it's been so stable for me.  Not a PA (and no inclination to become one), older Xeon six core CPU, DDR3 memory, rendering on Maxxwell generation GPUs, I don't bother with dForce, and I don't really need filament rendering as I don't create animations,

I'm satisfied with the purchase even with it being an older version.

when I bought FF8 through Daz I reached out to  directly to FF and asked them if I could get the upgrade to 9 since I bought through DAZ and all they needed was my confirmation showing I had bought it and when the new one was released they did give me the upgrade.  they were fantastic to work with!

Yes, I did that too with FF 7 to 8, was just wondering if they had changed their policy.  BTW, how do you get it for $27?  Current price in the store is $99.

...I got it here (Ver. 7) as it was discounted at 50% for a day and my Loyalty Bonus increased the total discount.to 72%

I went to FF's site and the uipgrade page, put my serial number in and it came back with 199$ to upgrade to ver. 9 forwhat they referred to as "Professional Edition Lifetime".  Not sure what they meant by that but it is awfully steep considering just buying FF 9 straight off on their site is now 79$ (icluding the free upgrade to FF10) . When I changed my version to FF8 I then got an actual upgrade price of 52$, so I guess FF7 doesn't qualify for the upgrade discount.

Evne though PBR textures were not incorporated into Filter Forge until Ver. 9, I wonder, couldn't I just create a texture and then use the Daz general Uber Iray shader preset to optimise it for Iray like one would do with 3DL or older Poser shaders?

ETA:  I sent them a message (I don't use either of the services that block their servers) inquiring about this.  If not, I onlg bought it here a couple days ago so I do have time to get a refund and then buy FF9 Pro directly.from their site.
