  • Bad first impression (and how to fix it)

Central should let you set the base path before installing.

Daz Studio and Central do not share settings, as far as I know DS uses the promat display on first launch.

That doesn't usually happen on first install, and the location of the configuration files is not in the Central install folder 9they go in AppData) so I'm not sure why you would have had this additional issue

Sadly Cloudflare time-outs like this are quite frequent, I agree that it is annoying.

    promat?

    Primary, would you believe?

Your typos are usually pretty easy to decipher, but this one stumped me. Thanks for the clarification. I'm sure it will help people understand your intent.

  • Several scripts are giving me a "error opening file" message

    Omniflux said:

It looks like you have mixed DAZ Connect content and standard install content. Many (all?) scripts have issues with Connect. Try uninstalling Contant Wizard (and other scripts with issues) through Connect, and reinstall them with DIM, Central, or manually.

There is no absolute problem between scripts adn Connect, I have for example used  http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/file_io/file_find/start to replace a defective read-me launcher in some Connect installs and it works fine. The script does have to be written in a way that allows for the content not being in the root content folder, however, and some scripts need to walk the content directory looking for other installed products which can be a bit trickier to implement if it needs to be open-ended.

  • Best way to get content from one old Win 7 pc to a new one Win 10

    thenoobducky said:

The quick and dirty way is just to copy over all files and set up the base directories correctly. Easiest if you put them back at the exact some location. If you use DIM/Central also copy over the install manifests or DIM will think those are not installed (You also need to fix the path in install manifest if you put the files at different location).

If you are rebuilding your content folder from scratch and would like to know which items you need then something like

    https://www.daz3d.com/content-gatherer

or this script can do it one file at a time: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/metadata/list_products_used/start

or my program might be able to help (not tested for win 7 and it says win10+ but it is for a different functionality than finding files).

As for how to physically copy files over, could you unplug the drives from old computer and plug into the new one either internally or externally?

Thank you. Your last option seems the best right now. Get the old HDD into the new machine. Just never done that! What an adventure! Ha.

    Easiest Way?

Surely that's take the HDD out of the old PC, put it in the new & then copy the files internally within the new machine - if you even feel the need to do that at all. If you don't, just add the correct place on the old drive as a second content directory for DS. Does rely on NOT having ever used something like DAZ Central which puts stuff in odd places, though. It's the sort of thing I'm planning on doing when my machine eventually gives up the ghost.

    Regards,

    Richard

Thank you. Never installed an old HDD into a new PC. Does the new PC just concider it an external storage drive, regardless of operating system, etc.?

    ...that's when I'm done here.

Already crossed Octane off my list because it went subscription.

Connect speed, and for some, download limits, will be the bottleneck, not the hardware.

I'll just plod along with my Daz 4.12.0.47. what I have in my library, along with whatever and Rendo and CGTrader still put out as wel las what I can model in Blender.

    Torquinox said:

I suppose there is something to the notion of image size and disc space storage. Certainly, my RAW photos from pictures I've taken occupy an enormous amount of disc space. Music and video take up plenty, too. And let's not start about the size of our Daz content libraries. But there is also software bloat. It's routine for new versions of older software to have ever-higher hardware demands to keep the procurement treadmill spinning at maximum rpms. Supposedly, we're getting greater output from that increase, and maybe we are. But eventually we'll get kicked off the treadmill.

    ...+1.

The one nice thing about painting was the only time you needed to purchase something was if you ran out of canvas, paints, watercolour paper, or a brush wore out.  There was no "tech curve" to force it.

  • No surfaces on props

I am getting a glitch where some prop objects I purchased do not have any sufrace or UV information and just look like basic gray shapes.I have used Daz Central, DIM and manual installtion on the packages and the error still happens. It just seems to be happening with two purchases made in the last two days. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    felis said:

If you only moves new content, my assumption is product upgrades to products in the old directory could cause issues.

Content installed through Daz Studio won't be an issue, but content installed through Install Manager or Daz Central does remember where it was placed and so yes, updates can be a slight issue. There is an option in the advanced settings for DIM to use the current path, rather than the installed path, for updates.

  • Webp nonsense is annoying

    bytescapes said:

Late to the thread as usual, but I just saw an interesting tip on using Dropbox to convert between image formats. Basically, if you have a Dropbox account and an image that you want to convert, you can upload the image to Dropbox, then go to the image and click the three little dots ("...") that appear alongside the image name in the listing. This pops up a menu of options; toward the end of the menu, you'll find a "Save As ..." option that lets you save as PNG or JPG. I tested, and it does work for re-saving WebP images in other formats.

If you don't have other tools handy, this trick might be helpful.

Having said that, you should generally try to convert images as little as possible. Many of the common formats in use are 'lossy', meaning that when an image is saved into that format, information in the image may be changed or destroyed. So every conversion that you do makes things a little bit worse, until artifacts such as ugly blocks of color start showing up noticeably in the image.

I have to confess that my first reaction to the original poster saying that they are in the habit of re-downloading their images from the DAZ Gallery was "Well, don't do that! Why would you do that?" I'm sure they actually have good reasons, but as a general rule you should always assume that online services may alter your data in ways you won't necessarily like -- such as converting from your preferred format to something different, like WebP, as in this case, or compressing the crap out of it. Or, in some cases, going suddenly out of business and making everything you ever uploaded inaccessible. Always keep your originals and never trust third parties with the only copy.

Agreed.   One option however is the binary News (Usenet) groups, whatever you upload here stays in the original format and some Usenet providers have up to 12 years retention so you can download what you uploaded 12 years ago.

But these days I believe most people don't even know what Usenet is (though Google Groups include some of the Usenet groups).  Which is unfortunate IMO, Usenet is a great discussion forum, no censoring apart from a few moderated groups and you can remain 100% anonymous if you want (unless you post something illegal and someone reports it, in which case the provider you use can reveal your identity to the authorities), and no advertising except for a few spammers.  It's a bit like cryptocurrency actually, no central server but the material is shared by and exchanged between a number of servers all over the planet.

Usenet was very popular back in the 90's, I think Facebook and the other web media destroyed it by making their services free.  A Usenet account costs a little (from $3/month for 20 GB up/download), but as always, you get what you pay for - if you want to be free from censoring, advertising, and companies like Facebook stealing and selling your personal information, it costs, servers and bandwidth aren't free.

There is a morph loading with a defulat value of 1, which is not mixing with the other shapes. First check that there are no updates for your content (if you installed through Daz Central or Install Manager, or through Daz Studio itself, updates should be flagged).
