I might be reading the descriptions wrong but when looking at G9 females released on the material side of things very few seem to be using all the G9 features that say vicky9 uses, almost as if the texures have no advantage over what could be done in G8.

Am I wrong or is this what other people are seeing??

I think you're right, and I'm seeing it too. MallenLane said that the Genesis 9 8k detail normals are available for any Genesis 9. So, either those 8k maps are not being loaded on the rest of the G9 characters, or Victoria 9 & Michael 9 have skin far superior in realism to the rest.

Victoria 9's freckles only skin submarined it as a go-to for me.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're both saying, but PAs (from what I've read) are not obligated to provide 8k maps for the figures that they produce. You can use the G9 detail map for any G9 figure that doesn't come with one by clicking 'Detail Enable' on in the Surfaces tab and adding the map in the 'Detail Normal Map' section.

Not really saying anything just asking mostly. You are correct no-one is obligated but the thread is about discussing if to take the plunge into gen9 and if other than Vicky9 and Mike9 that offer a visual advantage over gen8.1 not sure if its the correct move for me. i will wait until somebody makes something that makes me switch like the skin for Vick8.1 made start buying 8.1 stuff.

Where exactly are the 8k maps?

    Thanks.

Edit: it's ok i've found them... never noticed there was a Detail Normal Map section in addition to the Normal map section (so many blind spots!)

Dark Fairy Bundle pricing seems wrong:
    $48.99 = Daz+ price (30% New Release + 30% Daz Original)
    $48.99 x .8 (banner 1) = $39.19
    $39.19 x .75 (banner 2) = $29.39
    $29.39 x .65 (full loyalty discount) = $19.10
Price should be $19.10 if I didn't flub the math or misread the details, but it's $23.88 in cart.
    See attached.

It looks like people are getting both banners and should only get one. If you don't own Pixie 9, but have Victoria 9, Michael 9 or Josie 9, you get 20%. If you own Pixie 9, you get 25%.

I was game to check out G9, but after buying Victoria and the first morphs nothing else has been released that I've been interested in. I've never used any purchased character as is out of the box, I'm a gene pooler, and as it is right now, there's basically no content or reason to use G9. Every time I've tried, I've just decided for now I can do a million times more with G8/8.1. Seems like a poorly managed release of a new generation, but it sounds like that's how it's always been done. You'd think they would give key PA's more time to create supporting products before releasing the new generation. There's no reason to buy clothes or poses, or clothes / pose converters, to put on the few figures that have been released if you're not interested in rendering images of those characters with little ability to customize anything involved that's "G9". Maybe some day.

I don't know how you imagine this should happen. We get to create products a year in advance and only when everything that anyone could need is done we release everything in one go? Will you buy all this stuff at once for hundreds of dollars? How do PA's make money in that year?

If G9 isn't ready for you yet then that's fine, but let's not pretend that there is a better way to release stuff. PA's need regular income like any other working person.

I will admit to being impressed with how many of the add-ons to G9 that I consider critical to my adoption of the figure have already been released in just under two months and am baffled by the reaction that you quoted. Sure, we could use more characters, but that's something that will take time to build up, which has always been the case.

I didn't mean to baffle or offend, really just venting dissapoinment that I can't do much with G9 as of yet. By key PA's, I should have stated I suppose that what I'm really more picturing are the PAs that basically add funtionality to a generational figure and therefor DS as a whole, since so much of that is left up to the PAs. I don't buy a ton of characters, I buy the ones that really grab me and otherwise rely on all the Parameters I've collected. The stuff that's been released looks great, I just don't need it yet because the funtionality isn't there. I do apologize.

  • Is DAZ ever gonna be better with handling dense geometry?

    Interesting discussion.

    I just tried the following:

    4 x G9 Female at sub-d 1 with clothing and hair.

100 instances of ultrascenery grass patch.

Disabled turboboost on the CPU (this way it is limited to its base frequency which is 2.6 GHz in my case)

    Notebook with 10th gen i7 and RTX 2070 8GB

    Result: (see edit below):

Viewport feels like about 5 frames per second. G9s and grass can be moved with a slight delay (maybe 3 seconds).

When I allow turboboost on the CPU the delay is about 1 second, maybe less. Viewport feels like 10 frames per second.

What would kill the performance of course is setting the eyes of a G9 to "point at". But that limits the speed even with one figure and no grass because it is constantly updateting the morph evaluation.

    EDIT:

    The above test is wrong:

I just noticed that the Victoria 9 HD character was corrupted somehow. Every manipulation on her (bend arm) was stuttering. I loaded the figure as a scene subset, maybe that broke it somehow.

I deleted her and loaded a new V9. Now there is no delay anymore in scene manipulation. Moving one of the 4 figures or the grass and navigating the viewport is reasonably fast. Frames per second feel like 25.

So maybe it is not the amount of geometry that plagues the OP but maybe a broken figure or the amount of instances. He wrote 10 K instances of grass. That means 10 K objects to handle. I my test I only have 100 instances.

    EDIT 2:

Yes, it is the amount of instances. I made another 2000 and now navigating the viewport and moving objects starts to slow down.

  • Genesis 9 Question

    morrisonmp said:

But at some point, especially with clothing, you'll see enough trend/fashion changes - along with props like phones, tech, etc. that assets that are "keeping up with the times" will become scarcer for older generation figures.

Props are the easiest to use with other generations, usually. And there's usually also a lot available as freebies. Clothes... I would expect many PAs go their G8 catalog and "adapt" these designs for G9. This happened with many G3 outfits already, and for quite a few PAs repetition is a business model. Add to that, real world fashion isn't - afaik - not really mirrored in DAZland, else we wouldn't have so many wild west, pirate, goth, "medieval", fantasy and whatever outfits. Usually when DAZ is planning a new "themed" DAZ named figure - like Victoria 9 now - PAs do their best to produce fitting stuff for the theme of that figure. Often oldfashioned.

So, the point where you would "have to" go for G9 is - right now - far away. And, as mentioned, the chances of the products released NOW for G9 will get cheaper the longer you wait for buying them.. wink

  • Genesis 8.1 and 9 Clothing on Genesis 8 and 3

If it starts asking for autofit, you can fit the Genesis 8.1 item onto Gen 8 easily by changing the Scene ID of your Genesis figure to match the clothing. PerttiA explains it pretty succinctly here: Genesis 8.1 / Victoria 8.1 - Page 43 - Daz 3D Forums.

If you want to apply Gen 8 male clothing to Gen 8 female characters and vice versa, the Genesis 8 Cross-Figure Resource Kit is a great investment and works so well. You can then save the new morph into the clothing too. I really recommend it.

  • Genesis 9 Question

    morrisonmp said:

Hi. So, I'm still fairly new to Daz. Just started in March of 2022. Been really enjoying it.

I'm curious about the on-ramp to Genesis 9. Basically, I've been really happy with Genesis 8 and 8.1 characters but I realize that - at some point - it will be practical to make the switch to G9.

But so far, the G9 characters that have been released are not impressive. My main complaint is that they seem... doughy. They seem soft and very round. I've played with Victoria 9, the new base 9 characters, and a couple of the released 9 characters so far and they are... just not "sharp." And some of the characters proportions just feel odd to me.

So far, I've been kind of interpreting this as the difficulty of building a character off a base that can take both male and female shapes with no dilineation between them but I'm not sure if that is a fair critique (because I am not a creator).

I don't mean to put down the work of any creators. I'm sure they work hard and do their best to make awesome products. I just don't see G9 as a viable figure yet and I'm wondering, how much of this happened between the G3 and G8 switch? How much can we realistically expect from the G9 character as an improvement on G8? How long until really high-end G9 figures start appearing?

And how long until G8 new releases become so scarce that we have no choice but to switch?

    Thanks.

Since you started your Daz Studio journey not very long ago, on March 22, there will be SO MANY products in the Store for G8 and G8.1 that it will keep you happy rendering with your * and that is what I got from your post * with your prefered G8 / G8.1.

I personally prefer G9 now, since I have rendered a fair bit with it.

If you do not like the look and feel of G9, you do not need to switch, as I said, all the products for G8 and G8.1 will keep you busy for a long time.

I am rendering with G8 for years and still do not have all products that are made for G8 and G8.1 :)

  • Genesis 9 missing/unresponsive morphs

I have purchased and installed these products: Genesis 9 Starter Essentials, Genesis 9 Essential Shapes Bundle, Victoria 9 HD and Shape Shift for Genesis 9.

All listed parts of these products seem to be working correctly except that the morphs Nipples Depth Feminine and Nipples Depth Masculine are missing (part of Genesis 9 Body Shapes). In thier place are Nipples Depth Feminine HD, Nipples Depth Masculine HD, Nipples Tips Feminine Large and Nipples Tips Masculine Large which I cannot find listed in any product I purchased and adjusting these sliders has no effect on the mesh whatsoever. All the other chest morphs work including Nipple Diameter and the Areolae morphs. The nipples themselves are just unresponsive dead zones.

Perhaps I am missing some necessary product or some setting somewhere but I cannot find it. Can anyone help please?

There is a product available that will do exactly what you want: Content Gatherer

It seems to be broken by DS updates or at least difficult to get working correctly.  There are several threads about it:

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/530941/content-gatherer-not-working-correctly-alternative
    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/166076/content-gatherer-problem
    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/600286/content-gatherer-kaput
I used it myself a while ago and it was missing several files it was supposed to find, but maybe it wasn't configured correctly.

I really tried. But I didn't manage to use it. I'm sorry. At the end of the day I utilized an...archaic method.
I made a new library in a new HDD I had to buy, then I renamed the old Data foulder as "Data_".
So everything I charged in DAZ gave me a message of error with the position of the "Data" files that daz couldn't find.
Once I found them I copied manually in the new library. Foulder by Foulder.
Then I went to check in Runtime/textures since a lot of product are named in the same or similar way in Textures folder. And I copied and paste in the new library that too. Folder by folder.
What I couldn't identify well, I simply downloaded and installed again in the new library.
Looooong work. More similar to a house cleaning, with similar fatigue.
But at the end I had a whole HDD with only junk file. I formatted and I brought back the now clean library to the old HDD.
Result: After an infinite work, The library that was 490 Gb big (there was old morphs and stuff even by the first Victoria and Michael!) now is 100Gb.
