  • Olympia 8

Reading all the comments makes me feel like I've dropped into the Twilight Zone. I think she looks stunning!! Really beautiful!

it is amusing don't you think that usually the complaint is each figure is toooo pretty/perfect not average everday looking or is youngish looking needs to be more mature older looking or toooo skinny and then they give us that or try to and then still complaints saying she's ugly or fat or old or butch the only female figure I've seen relised that everyone raved over was Star. Oh well can't please everyone. I also look at the related  extras you can buy which gives you more an idea of the newer character/s some interesting like the add on clothing textures or poses and so on as sometimes these better display the potential of the new characters and there are a few there that show off both the tough gritty side as well as more softer side of Olympia, Victoria and Gen8 as well as some of the add on characters. Got pro yeah maybe could've just gone for the base but want a few things to get going yeah she and Vicky can use older stuff but still nice to have few of their own things too and I think the archery set is ok too has that action comic suoer hero vibe feel to it would buy some of the extras if could afford

lol Yeah. Can't please everyone, that's for sure. One thing I think MIGHT be causing (or at least contributing to) the complain-fest is that there is a lot of really negative stuff going on in the world right now, and I think that might be affecting both people's moods as well as making them a LOT more picky about what they spend their money on. (That's just a theory though.)

I absolutely love Olympia 8 and will be getting her as soon as I'm able to get some money coming in. :)

I think you'll like her you know she may make a good starting point for a G8 version of Lady Death

yeah always negative now days in everything just look at anything on facebook even a cute and funny aniaml pic or video enrages people

some say O looks too manly maybe some she looks like a tough lady but there are plenty in rl do but same time there are a few promo renders that make her look softer and others that make her look like an average don't wanna say plain but as someone that doesn't stand out as for some saying looking like Vicky well looking at the different shots I think even in the base promos some are featuring showing what she looks like with Vicky skin or part of her dialed in but not saying it like others promos have when they've displayed other characters shapes dialed combined or skin textures used

hahah She WOULD make a nice base for Lady Death! :)  I'm still working on trying to find a couple of really good white-haired hair shaders.

She's pretty much perfect for Lady Death. I'm definitely looking forward to getting her!

was wondering on your progress wouldn't mind doing a version too mentioned before did Purgatori and the owner creator loves fanart love to do Evil Ernie. Haven't done a Vampirella for ages either yeah different company but was crossovers Vampi took on LD and P teamed up with LD. Actually Olympia here would work as Vampi too been a few different sizes builds of her over the years depending on the artist. Body shape wise she may also be good with some morphing in some areas for a Bettie Page type character model you know the curvey models of the 40s-50's and some later ones 80s mostly British ones they were more curvey

  • Carrara Hair

Philemo's program which bridges between Carrara and VWD (available on another site) also includes a bonus which converts Carrara hair into an OBJ, with a couple of selectable settings (at least I think that is where it came from). I used it to produce this version of my Paige Hair product, which was converted into an OBJ, loaded into DS, textured and rendered there. I think he said that it was a beta version but you can clearly get workable results from it.

    Awesome and Much Thanks.

"I already specified exactly what I meant when I said she devil, none of the pictures I posted are reminiscent of what I described, and no I do not want a model that looks like what I consider to be a she-devil. I want something that looks like what I posted, demonic not satanic, I don't really understand where I'm not being clear."

Except that demonic and Satanic are interchangeable terms. Satan would be a demon. This is like saying you want a fish, but not a shark - a shark is a fish.

"The hellfire/brimstone? Are people even reading or do you just want to argue against what I'm asking for? Like I said, I do not want anything that gives the impression of satan or hell, all available assets that I've seen give that impression. Specifialy, I do not want anything that looks like the sterotypical satan, or related to that image, in any way. Why is that so hard to understand?"

So, basically, your real issue is with posing and facial expressions. What's stoping you from taking some of the existing characters and demonic components and simply posing the character in a seductive manner and smiling? These things are only as predatory as you, the artist, chooses to make them.

Here's an example of a comical-looking character I based on Bettie Page's famous devil-girl look, back in the Genesis 2 era. It's not evocative of literal demonic themes - it's comical. It's my first attempt at trying to make something which would fit into the military 'nose art' style.

    http://sentinalysis.deviantart.com/art/Bombshell-Away-479647041

See? A character can have demonic components, but come across as fun or comedic. It's totally up to you. You don't need the store to dictate how you use an asset.

"Yes, keywords being HELLFIRE/BRIMSTONE wings, horns, or anything. All of the examples have horns and wings because I want horns and wings... I seriously don't understand why people are making this so hard. The example that's red, isn't one of the ones I used for what I want and I was showing what I did not want. None of the pictures posted have red skin... unless your definition of red is my definition of purple."

I do wish that someone would create some texture expansions for the Dark Fantasy set, agreed, but keep in mind that you're not forced to use the 'Hellborn' material. The alternative material for the wings is a dark material.

Then just add some skins like these, so that they merge better:

    http://www.daz3d.com/fantasy-skins-for-genesis-3
    https://www.daz3d.com/mrl-mutations

Midnight Stories does the excellent alternative demonic wings set, as someone mentioned, along with some texture expansions for it. Although, personally, I find the bone structure on those too thick for much other than cartoons.

My ideal demonic wings would have the realism of the Dark Fantasy set, extra colour options and not have the membrane stretch down the back. Now that we've moved on a generation, I doubt those will now ever emerge for Genesis 3, though, sadly.

  • Tell Us! Links To Favorite Gallery / Art Studio Renders

Welcome Party - this was one of my faves, with how it came out. I was quite happy with it - and I'm probably happy with maybe 1 in10 renders I do LOL Like many people, clowns creep me out. And MortemVetus make the coolest creepiest unique characters so I was stoked when they did Nas-t Boyz for G3M. What I had in my mind was a post-apocalyptic feel - world is gone to ruin, mutants abound (such as that gargoyle hound which is one of my all time fave animals/creatures to use) and people are just nuts. Such as these dudes who wear the clown makeup to seem as horrifying and scary as they can, so they can attack the small groups of travelers. (iray render)

Bad Day - I'm crazy in love with Belle 6 - I think she was the best teen/young figure we got. I wanted a feeling of 'menance' here - a pretty young girl, dressed simply....but she's got guns and a kind of creepy crazy look on her face. Same clothing adn same figure with a smile on her face in a contemporary setting, she'd be just a pleasant portrait of a pretty teen. But I feel I did capture that menance in this one. (3delight render)

Paige - I have absolutely no memory of how I achieved this. LOL. I really liked the grey, washed out look to it - yet her eyes and red clothing and tatts are quite vibrant. I don't think I could recreate this look if I tried my hardest now. LOL. (3delight render)

Roar! - oh man, i was SO thrilled with how this ended up! It's still one of my favourites. That subtle gleam/shine around his body made me so happy. I love the vibrant colours on him, and the flames behind him. (3delight render)

Time Out -  ok I admit it, I'm in love with this man. LOL! It's plain ol' Michael 7 and I have no idea how I did it, but gosh dang it, there's something about this render that had me fall totally in love with him. I don't know whether it's the moustache or his facial look or what, but this one thrilled me with how it turned out. In retrospect, I should have put a subtle light in the building behind him, so the windows weren't black, but he had me so blinded with love with him, I didn't see anything else. LMAO. (iray render)

  • Dynamic Blanket

Buying something specific for the horse would look more realistic tho. E.g.,

    https://www.daz3d.com/western-saddle-for-daz-horse-2

Thanks, I'm trying to make a throughbred horse racing scene. I have the DAZ Horse 2 Pro bundle but oddly they left out any thoroughbred, quarter horse, or harness racing tact. An english saddle is more similar than a western saddle for a horse racing saddle but it is still much too big. I found on the Optitex site a dynamic cloth for Bettie Page (I think she is a Hollywood Star of the past) that I can use as the horse blanket. I just need to retexture & add the number & maybe the the silk pattern & logo.

  • Armor is not carefully considered by artists

Keep in mind, most Poser and DAZ armors aren't intended to be realistic.  Many sets are based in certain Fantasy styles like World of Warcraft or Boris Vallejo, while others mimic certain comic book or movie styles.  Very rarely are these styles "realistic", in that they offer any realistic protection or coverage.

Add to that, most of us aren't doing 3D to render realistic images anyway, so non-realistic armor is just fine with us.

yep and there are a lot of women that are into this style too which is cool I know a lot that are both on line and personaly including my mother actually seems more women then men sometimes same with manga/anima, comics, gaming, certain movie/tv genres even pinups like Bettie Page which is really cool

  • PC+ sale here now, any must-buys for Cararra? The Wrap-up and unfinished business

You are quite right, no rocks or grass seems an odd omission. But we are where we are, and at least there are some good ones easily available, and it is not difficult to create your own. Glad you are finding the tutorials useful!

Finally, someone agreed!  Not only that, but you summed it up nicely.  Thank you, Phil.

I'm buying your Carrara 8.5 tutorial TODAY, btw.  The wife gave her OK.smiley

UnifiedBrain - just to pick up on a couple of points, you mentioned that DS users find the Carrara interface unfriendly, I don't think it is at all, it's just that it is different from DS and therefore feels unfamiliar. If you want an unfriendly interface, try using Blender! But in the end, it comes down to what you are familiar with. As a mainly Carrara user, I still feel a bit lost when using DS sometimes, and I am sure that is the case in the reverse direction. Once you get used to it, both programs can browse, load, pose and render pretty smoothly (with the obvious exceptions of Genesis 3 etc).

It is great to hear that perspective, Phil.  It's still early in my apples to apples evaluation, but at this point I suspect that you are exactly correct, that it is more abut being unfamiliar with the Carrara interface, and less about it actually being difficult.  However, it is still difficult for me, so I am just offering a theory, while you are speaking from actual experience.

The other one I wanted to pick up on is Carrara's native renderer - I have always found it to be very fast and very capable. It is set up for speed rather than quality though, harking back to when computers were a lot less powerful than they are now. But with a few adjustments, it can produce some very realistic renders with still acceptable render times - this is largely what my "Realism Rendering" tutorial title is all about, and in many circumstances it can rival the output of iRay and other physically based renderers.  And it supports (out of the box) things like Carrara's hair and replicators that allow hugely complex scenes to be rendered very efficiently. I have attached an example character loaded and rendered with Carrara's native engine and with Carrara hair added (in this case my Paige Hair product).

Nice job on the render, and wonderful context on the render engine.  For some reason, you seem to understand where I am coming from.  Grateful for that.

  • Helen Hunt look-alike model?

Here's another attempt, I included pictures of her smiling just because that is how Ms. Hunt is usually photographed.  Mostly Morphs++ with some use of the Paige dial on Stephanie 4.  If you like it, WillowRaven, I will package it up and put it on my sharecg account and put a link here.  If not, I'll have to call it quits.

  • NEW! Novica & Invited Guest Contributors Tips & Product Reviews Pt 6

So many nice renders in this thread lately, I don't know where to start.

@Novica: I like your couples ninjas. That's a fun idea and cute render.

@Jakiblue I like your render of Sheridan hair. Very pretty. I can see the PA is a fan of Bettie Page as that hairstyle is her trademark hair.

@Barbult your render of Christina Hair is lovely.

@Novica: That outfit is a shame. I bet the Edwardians would be rolling in their graves with so much pokethrough. I had similar issues with the male Edwardian outfit, which is why I bought and never used it.
