The 'Ariana Day Out' Bundle is interesting for D+ members. $ 5.99 plus a Spotlight item is nice. I bought the bundle mainly because of the SUV and the hair. Ariana is ok as a kinda unlikable character, although she looks somewhat similar to the other kinda unlikable character in my collection, Victoria 9. I'll convert the little dress into a fantasy outfit with some shaders and add leggings and boots. The shoes - well, not my cup of tea.
@carvelle, I bought the bundle afterall and finished a render of Ariana in the dress, which has a welcomed skirt length morph and others. The high heels, well, the character would have to be standing on her toes to wear them. I used some sandals for my render. I generally don't do open mouth smiles (teeth baring = threat in my mind) but I did one from a pose set with expressions and it turned out okay. I would post but... forums being cranky. I am not sure about her teeth, I have seen folks refer to some teeth as chicklets and that might describe hers. Again, I rarely expose them, although there was no issue with smile sliders or other expressions. I did not try either of the two makeup options. I wish this PA would take a little more time with the promos, as it may cost them sales. I have avoided them in the past for this issue.

Thanks so much for your descriptions, I'm still on the fence about the bundle. Would you say you like the character overall? Because fhe promos really don't say much ...
Sorry about the delay, I fell down a rabbit hole of 'haplogroups' and ancient migration patterns yesterday and again this morning.
As far as Ariana goes, she is okay. Does she shout to me she is a star? No, and a star is too noticable to everyone, you need a character actress that can become who you need. Other than that one render, I didn't play with her anymore. (That rabbit hole had me firmly in its grips.) But, she posed nicely, her sliders for expressions worked well. I have had some characters where their faces never moved a muscle and frustrated me no end. I think I would need to use her more often in other ways to get a better feel for her. I think any number of people here on the forums could do a lot with her based on what I have seen them post in the past.
As far as the SUV goes, yeah XI has an unfortunate habit of using large texture sets, though they have gotten better at adding lower level ones in recent packages. Suggest the MMX sets to reduce size or the one of the other products that reduces stress on your computers? (My old iMac needs to be rebooted right now and I can't think of the name off my 71-year-old head.) I haven't tried it on neither my MacBookPro M1 nor my Win 10 1080 or 1080Ti computers, so I don't know if it crash them. I have been able to render the XI Christmas New York scene without issue thought.

Pre- Genesis 9G8 is still going strong almost everywhere else besides the official Daz store. So you don't have to search very hard. A quick glance at the "what's new" page at Rendo is dominated by G8 releases. In fact I think I only saw ONE item for G9 on the whole page, that's it. Everything else is Genesis 8. And not even 8.1, no it is all Genesis 8.0.
Some PAs even appear to have dropped Genesis 9 in favor of 8, which I think is a very bad tell on the true state of Genesis 9. I honestly have to say that G9 feels forced at this point. Of course Daz is going to make everything for G9. But the 3rd parties don't have to abide by that. Some PAs like G9 because it has a few more polys than 8 and unisex. For me personally I just don't see a reason to go to 9. 9 just doesn't offer a compelling enough reason to jump when there is no compatibility. Even Genesis 8 reuses a lot of Genesis 3 UVs. I made fun of G8 calling it G3.5, but at least there was that compatibility between them with the minor improvements. Most of the improvements on G9 are basically textures. And there is still significant debate over G9's bending, which may or may not be any improvement. If it doesn't pose better, what is the point? If you convert G9 textures to G8, you can get the same results. A lot of people don't realize this. They just see Victoria 9 and think she's pretty.
If I am going to jump to a new generation, I expect either one of two things: Either the new generation offers a lot of compatibility like G8 did, or the new generation is vastly superior in every possible way. But G9 doesn't do either of these. Genesis 9 breaks all compatibility, and yet doesn't offer any true generational improvements for this effort. I was pretty hyped for G9, too. I was totally on board with the concept and unisex. I even told people afraid their PCs couldn't handle an 8k texture to chill (and they still need to chill). Victoria 9 looked nice, but my hype quickly tanked when I used G9 for a little bit. I just don't see any genuine improvements.
Victoria 9 is nice, but it should be clear at this point that this is due to the artist who created her, rather than anything Genesis 9 does. We cannot pretend that artistic quality is a Genesis 9 exclusive trait, if you take the material textures away what does G9 really do?
As more people come to realize this, I think that keeps them from moving on. I'm only buying environments and props now from this store if I buy anything at all.

Yeah, it's a really nice price, but this bundle is just "meh" to me. I agree that the character doesn't feel likeable or with much personality, and having 4 exactly the same promo shots doesn't convince me and probably doesn't do her justice. From the rest of it, the hair is the only thing I can see myself using, so even at that admittedly great price, I'm likely going to pass.

Hair in HID promoI've previously asked what some of the hairstyles in the promo for HID Emmy are, and so far I've identified Soft Curls Hair for G9 in the 2nd & 6th pics.
I'm still trying to find out the others, can anyone clear things up?
Face Transfer on Genesis 9Well that's the thing, Face Transfer morphs are practically useless without purchasing the add on morph pack, because of how flat the faces are coming out of it. There is not a morph product for Facegen like that. On that basis alone, FT is not actually doing anything better than FG. When using the morph fixers, it is relying on the work of PhilW more than the Face Transfer morph itself. If any PA created a morph pack aimed at Facegen, that could change everything. But I think there are plenty of morphs out there than can do this already. Rarestone's Miya character comes with a variety of really good face morphs for cheek bones, with 2 or 3 different morphs that can slim the cheek bone down quite nicely. Rarestone also made great 200 face morph packs for G8 male and female, which have all sorts of nose morphs.
Don't forget you can morph a face inside Facegen itself, too, and try to tackle the cheeks that way. Though I wish FG had an "undo" button. You have to really pay attention to what the number on the dial is before you hit the dial.
Another trick can also be placing the auto dots on the cheeks further inward. Where you place dots can have a big effect on the result. The new versions place dots automatically, but you can fine tune them.
At any rate, I don't often use 100% of the morph FG creates, though I did for my example pics in the last few posts. You can also whip out the smoothing tool on the cheek bones in Hexagon or Blender.
The thing that Facegen does best is texture. It is unmatched in that area now. A couple years ago it could be argued for one software or another being better in specific cases, but now Facegen has a clear lead on creating the texture. I have noticed the FG does a lot better with fringe hair and other things, on top of blending in so well with the textures you pick. Face Transfer does not give the user any choice in texture, you only get the base texture for G8M or G8F and that's it. Facegen can use literally any texture you want, even it it makes no sense.
I even tried a set of pure white texture boxes that were 4K in size to see what would happen. It colored them all to match the head texture as best it could, though this doesn't work so well with a photo. However, this could work with a toon style character! It is a wild possibility, and that is something that only Facegen can do currently. This freedom lets you use any texture set you want, so if you like a certain character's texture set, you can totally use that. Of course you cannot distribute a character model made from commercial set (unless it is a merchant resource), but the option is there for users to render them as they wish. So you could use skin builder textures with Facegen. Or you can do like I did above and use Victoria 8.1. The choice is yours.

How about a nice sunrise with some clouds?
I think every splash screen should show 'Victoria in a temple with a sword' (NVITWAS), with all the trimmings. Each time with the latest Genesis generation and technique. That would be fun and bring continuity. ;-)
I've not done one of those since Genesis was a thing. Hmmm.

I haven't done a single NVIATWAS either, but then I'm not a Daz splash screen designer. At some point, this iconic motif should be officially acknowledged! ;-)
Face Transfer on Genesis 9I did some more testing and found a something I think is not intended. With Genesis 9 (and only G9) Facegen has a new check box option to "optimize textures for Iray". So I kept this box checked at first.
Over time I started noticing my textures were kind of yellow and light. You can see that my Asian girl is much more yellow above. For G9 (and again, only G9) FG now creates 2 textures for every surface. It creates a base color and a SSS trans map. However I noticed the textures are always the same! So there is no point...but I found out the issue. When you uncheck the box, it will create textures tinted just like they look with the old Genesis models.
So what I think is happening is that Facegen has goofed this up. The Iray textures should be creating the base color like normal, and the SSS map is this new yellowish texture. I created a set with both options, and placed the textures like I just described. The results are very nice. You can compare this to the pic above.
The left side has the 2 different textures, while the right side is the same base and trans map when selecting "Iray Optimization". Turning Iray Optimization off and using both textures as a base and trans result in the same tone as my G8 pic in the previous post.

So I believe Facegen has a bug to fix.
Additionally, I am seeing a consistent issue with the upper eyelids not following the arc like they do with Genesis 8. I have tested more faces, and this issue pops in a lot of them. In some cases it is fine because the person has eyelids like that, but for others it is not accurate.
Of course Facegen is rarely 100% accurate anyway, how can it be with just 1 or 2 photos. But it works amazingly well sometimes, and even if you don't get a perfect likeness, you can still get a unique face to add to your runtime. I have been surprised at good Facegen can be at times.
Anyone who is able to should at least upgrade to version 3.12. You can get to this version for free. After more testing, I found that when it comes to Genesis 8/8.1 and older, Facegen 4 works exactly the same with these models as it does in 3.12. And version 3.12 has a lot of small improvements that are not immediately noticeable, but they are there. Having used FG for ages, I can tell that some upgrades have been done.
If you know what models the 8 G9 base textures are, you can use the Genesis 8/8.1 originals and get the same results. 3.12 will create textures that look exactly like 4.2 does with Iray Optimization turned off. If you want to create the same effect that FG 4.2 can with G9, all you need to do is some color correction on the textures in your favorite editor and save the new textures as trans maps. Try out the free 4.2 demo, make a texture set with Iray Optimization on, and then use texture as a guide to color correct the textures for your G8 creations in FG 3.12.
Since I have 3.12, I can make the Asian girl for G8.1 without any watermark on her head. I was using the "East Asian" female skin as FG calls it, which is Clara 8.1 skin converted to G9. I'll sub in Victoria 8.1 for this 8.1 test.
So this is all I did: I fixed her lips in the texture. I created trans maps by using Hue Saturation in GIMP. I added in exactly 2 lip morphs to replicate the pout. 1 gave more inner lip curve, the 2nd lowered the corners (like her frown.) I applied Victoria 8.1 materials first, and replaced color and trans maps. I also changed the tear materials because it looks too black in Daz 4.21. The last thing I did was use the Genesis 9 eye texture that I got from the Facegen 4 demo, they work on the 8.1 UV just fine. That's all I did, it was very quick.

You can pretty much replicate this with Genesis 9 in the Facegen 4.2 by creating 2 textures sets, 1 with Iray Optimization and 1 without. Use the Iray texture as trans map. You might want to create or find a morph that can correct the upper eyelid shape. All you really have to do is lift the middle part of the crease up a little.
Here is a side view. This pic is to show how much better Facegen is at blending the texture in. I did NOT do anything to blend the texture in better. The only texture edit I did was on the lips. I created a new trans map, but that is based directly off the original (with new lips).

Try replicating this in Face Transfer or other. I seriously doubt you can. All I did was fix her lips, this looks pretty darn good. You can take a peek at Victoria 8.1's textures and see just how much the color has changed. This one thing is Facegen's biggest improvement. It is not perfect, there are some cases where I can still get a bit of that clown face. But these are not as common, they are not as extreme as they used to be. You don't have to battle Photoshop trying to blend the face in so much anymore. Hooray! This is from Facegen 3.12, so you don't need the latest version to get this perk. FG does a great job blending and toning almost any set of textures now. To my shock, even the African textures can be used! You will get more artifacts going from one extreme to another, but it is possible. I do not know how they managed to make that work at all, but it makes using Facegen much more enjoyable.
You also don't get as many neon textures anymore. The colors are just better in general. I am sure it is possible, but it happens way less.
So at this point, I do not see any reason to use Face Transfer ever again. First of all, FT cannot even use the photo I had. So you'd be screwed immediately. I actually used GIMP to add a scalp to her photo, and used the resulting image in Face Transfer. This worked, but the face still stood out from the rest of the images it creates. The new eyes you get from G9 in Facegen 4.2 are also worlds better than anything Face Transfer does. The eyes are not far off the color in the photo. You can use these eye textures on 8.1 as well (and even 8.0 if you made the UV for it.) I believe it is worth downloading the demo just for this one texture you can make.
Plus Facegen is still getting updates, obviously. I imagine they will update to fix the texture glitch, and possibly work out the eyelids. Face Transfer is almost certainly a dead product.

Videogame that feels like you're living in Daz StudioI don't see any high heels on these space suits for Starfield to be like a Daz product. If you are looking for "Daz Studio, the Game" you look no further than House Party, a game that has multiple Daz characters in all their glory, including appearances by Victoria 7 and her friends from the Genesis 3 era. The only thing it is missing is a sword and a dungeon. For real, I thought the title of this thread was about this game, lol.
Screen shot from the official Steam store page.

The game even has a paid DLC pack to get the naughty bits. I told you, it really is like Daz!
Anyway, the style that Starfield is going for leans towards realistic as opposed to pure fantasy for its scifi. I liked Mass Effect and its style a lot, but I think what Starfield is doing is pretty cool.

Thanks for all these. I'd picked up most of them when originally planning a western-themed episode and hadn't picked them up on a search when I started to put scenes together. That's the trouble with having 7000+ content items which I'm only just starting to organise.
The Victorian theme is good for the train passengers, since it's supposed to be people on their way to a Civil War victory celebration. There are some old-fashioned skirts and blouses that can be mixed and matched for "ordinary" female characters.
It would be nice to have some Union uniforms as guards on the train. Also some Confederate uniform elements that could be spread around post-war rebel groups

I was going to recommend the 'Shenandoah' series because many soldiers after the Civil War went West and had only their uniforms and worn them to rags, until they could replace them.

Gen3F has https://www.daz3d.com/retro-skirt-for-genesis-3-female-s and https://www.daz3d.com/victoria-iven-for-genesis-3-females which also has a lot of textures.
From family photos of the late 1800s/early 1900s, women in the West often lived in a long skirt, long sleeved blouse, boot-like shoes, and tried to protect their faces with hats/bonnets, the men in pants with suspenders, shirts with that stand-up collar (not a fold-over one), long sleeves, pants that fit over boots or tucked insides and were loose enough for chores and sturdy. Women wore their hair up from the teens, little girls had them down for dress up, but in pigtails, braids otherwise. Skin was covered up from neck to wrist.

Help identify this model? (Fuluo hair)She looks a lot like a Mousso character to me, maybe MSO Violet HD for Genesis 9 with some other morphs added (maybe a bit of Victoria 9 dialed in). That's my best guess, hopefully someone else will come along with a better guess.
Sorry for not adding any links, I'm on a tablet right now and the forum software and my tablet don't get along very well.
Edit: I should have added that the elf ears should be optional, so they can be ignored.
