Baby, You Can Drive My Car
The March 2015 Freebie Challenge

This month, we're shamelessly pandering to one of the loves of the guy who's in charge of the Freebie Challenges. Not "music" - we do that every October. This month, we're looking at cars!

But I'm putting a spin on it. As the Beatles quote in the challenge title implies, show us somebody driving a car ... or at least behind the wheel. It's up to you what sort of car - an 1884 de dion bouton et trepardoux dos a dos, a 2007 Mercedes cl 500, a Batmobile, a Shelby AC Cobra, a Volkswagen Beetle, an AS-42 Desert Reconnaisance Car, or something else entirely. (Yes, all of those are available as free models! Now that I've listed them, feel free to surprise me with something else instead.)

THE RULES

The Rules are in the usual thread.

(This time around, I am not being a nice guy as to the number of freebies you have to have in your render. You'll need at least two freebies for the car and the driver's clothing - the other eight (or more) freebies are what will make your render different from everyone else's.)

THE PRIZES:

As usual, DAZ3D is giving store credit to the creators of the first-, second-, and third-place entries. I'm tossing in a pair of $5 GCs (the Jaderail Memorial Prizes), one for each HM.

Our very own music2u4u has promised his Monkee Mobile to all the winners and Honourable Mentions! He'll be along shortly with some promotional images, I'm sure.

Once again, Mr Sparky has stepped forward with a gift of the winner's choice - any one product with only his name on it at Poser Direct. This will go to the first-place winner.

If you have a prize to offer, I'd be glad to pass it along to the winners!

To recap:

First Place: $15 store credit from DAZ3D, the Monkee Mobile from music2u4u, one item of your choice by Mr Sparky from Poser Direct

Second Place: $12 store credit from DAZ3D, the Monkee Mobile from music2u4u

Third Place: $8 store credit from DAZ3D, the Monkee Mobile from music2u4u

Honorable Mentions (×2): $5 GC from me, the Monkee Mobile from music2u4u

THE JUDGES:

I'm looking for volunteers to judge this month.
EDIT: gulan7 has volunteered to judge!

WHAT'S IN THE BANNER:

Victoria 4: http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-4-2-base

Paola Character: http://www.ageofarmour.com/3d/free/skin-textures.html

RQ V4 Hair 010: http://qraffx.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=121&products_id=10413 (re-coloured by changing the base diffuse colour)

67 Vette: http://www.sharecg.com/v/38223/

License plate texture: http://www.acme.com/licensemaker/

Now it's time to get your system running, head into your runtime, looking for some freebies, and whatever's on the way... Oh, wait - that's motorcycles, not cars.

If I had added a road, a sky, and three pieces of set dressing, I could have entered the banner image if I wasn't hosting! :)

Since a couple of details don't show up in the banner-sized image, I'm posting a larger render to show the two changes I made on Friday. I'm also sharing the license plate texture that I was going to use, and the plate texture that I did use.

I'm sure you can do better than this:

    OH YEAH!

My kind of challenge. I would enter this one but I already have the prize!...lol.

However...I may post a few of my car renders...if it's ok with Robkelk to show what can be done with this. I have spent a few years working on techniques to build, render, and show cars. My passion is 60s muscle cars. I also love antique cars.

Thank you sooo much for this theme Robkelk. I needed this...lol. I can't wait to see some of your work here folks.

Here is a few of mine. 1959 Chevy Apache pickup,1940 Ford coupe and the Daz 1930 Ford pickup in the garage.

To those who may be interested, here is a link to my Car and bike lovers thread here in the art studio forum. It is in it's third phase going into it's 4th. That's almost 400 pages of cars and links to free ones. There are some real nice ones listed. Just click the previous link at the very start of the thread to go back to previous threads. You can read about techniques and other info from some of the regulars there. Betsy is a guy (BTW) and one of my most dedicated car fans. He has done some nice work and is dedicated to cars.

So...if you feel like a real "trip"...go here and see what we do:

    thanks.

Car renders can become very realistic with the right programs and experience. Over 90% of all car ads now in magazines and tv are 3d models.

Here are a couple of my favorite 3d car renders out there. I am not sure who the authors are on these, but a few were submited in my car lovers thread by Renolace. Keep in mind...these are 3d models, NOT real cars. These renders are my inspiration especially the 1970 Chevelle SS 396. Looks sooo real.

Those are some great-looking renders, music ... but none of them show somebody behind the wheel, so I can't accept them.

More seriously... I'm not setting the bar that high for technical competence. Show me your originality!

I suppose this may have been asked before in other challenge threads, but, just to get clarification, the rules state:

"all freebies must be clearly and completely seen, not obstructed or hidden in any way from clear total viewing".

With large models or sets this would seem to imply that the entire model must be contained within the rendered scene. In the case of this challenge, that would imply that the entire vehicle must be seen. Is this correct? For example, a render showing only the passenger area of the vehicle would not be accepted?

    I appreciate any clarification. Thanks.

AFAIK it means that you must be able to see the freebie, so even if it is only the Passenger seat, as long as it is recognisable then it is OK.

Thanks, Cho. That makes more sense with a large model such as a vehicle. I just didn't want to get too far down the road (in a manner of speaking), without being certain.

That is how I am interpreting the rule this month.

It's unreasonable to expect to see an entire auto and an entire ... (picks at random) ... set of hair ribbons in the same image. As long as I can point to part of the render and say "that's the freebie, no question about it," I think the spirit of the rule is being followed.

Here's a quick start to the months challenge, I wanted to post early because I haven't done this contest before and I want to make sure that I have time to make adjustments in case I am misunderstanding the rules in any way! I am also a very new user and while this is an "entry" and I understand I only get to make 2 potential edits, I do not consider it even close to a final render per se. I am hoping to glean from the expertise of those here and do a lot of tweaking before I add any editted versions. Is this contest like the New Use contest in that people are willing to offer expertise and advice?

For example, I have never done car textures before in 3d, and am not even really a car enthusiast, so I haven't paid a lot of attention to the details all my life and it shows. Do I need to make more surface groups in order to get the details on the model? Right now it has "body, glass, windows, wheels" and I added "mirror". The insides of the door and the interior that you can see of the wrangler don't seem believable to me, at all.

I also have some ideas for variations on the theme. It is already kitsch, is there a such thing as taking it too far? One idea would be using the badger on the hood instead of the racoon and making a custom texture for it so that it looks like a skunk. (Is that allowed?) That would be quite the photo "bomb". Another would be to use the freebie ghost shader to turn the animals into ghosts, as if he was a hunter whose campsite is being haunted by the ghosts of past "victims". I appreciate any and all thoughts.

Question... I went and found a freebie goatee, because I wasn't sure if the facial hair textures (Phillp) from Michael 6 counted towards a paid product and I didnt want to use anything that came with it just in case? Also, is it okay to use parts of textures found in the freebies to make tilable textures for shaders for other parts of the image? EG I would potentially use the army hat camoflage for other areas...

You certainly have enough links to qualify, and they all check out as valid. (I was a bit worried about the beard being visible only in the mirror - that would have been a no-no according to the rules - but I think I can see enough of it on Angus' face that I'll allow it.)

One thing we usually do here is mark the links that require registration; in this case, that would be all of the Renderosity links. (If ShareCG hadn't changed its security settings a couple of months ago, those links would have had to be marked, too.) Since this is your first entry ever, I'll let that slide for now.

ENTRY ACCEPTED, and welcome to the Freebie Challenge!

You had a couple of questions... When the Challenge theme was "love," I did a tennis render - there's no such thing as "taking it too far" (as long as you don't violate the forum's TOS). As for re-using textures on other scene elements, I don't mind, but double-check the license terms of the freebies to make sure the textures' creators don't mind either. I'll leave the technical questions for other folks to answer.

Just to clearify for any other newbies on the rule mentioned above. In this case, being that a large item is being used (a car), I will say that as long as you can see some of the car, and you have listed a link to the car for others to get if it is to be claimed as a freebie, then that would be fine. Just so we can go see and get the full car and we have no doubt it is, in fact, THAT car. If it is a paid for claim and there may be a doubt, you should also list a link to it so we can see the full car. It will count as a paid for then.

I will also add, being as the theme says "You can drive my CAR", I would say that CARS have dominance over say pickup trucks or other forms of vehicles. Try to keep it to a car if you can. I am sure that pickups and UVs will be allowed, but Winnebegos, trailers, large commercial 18 wheelers, trains, buses, etc. should not be used. I will let the host decide what he wants to accept.

Also, if you change the car's color or look and you only show part of it, be sure to list that you changed certain things on it as not to confuse anyone.

I've already ruled out motorcycles and allowed off-road military cars, so ... yeah, cars (jeeps, sedans, compacts, F1 or NASCAR racers, HUMMVs and so on). No big-rig trucks, buses, trains, planes, or boats.

A VW Microbus or other "soccer mom" van is probably the biggest vehicle I'd consider to be a "car" - and even that would be stretching the point.

For those of you who would like to have a real nice car model to use, here is a link to the free 1953 Cadillac in the render here. It can be used as you wish but not redistributed. You can only give the link and it must be gotten at the site. It is free and very nice. It is a great model to start your car collection with. Very detailed. It is in .obj format so can be imported into any program that supports .obj files. All the textures are with it and should load with it. Maybe this will help get you started. Enjoy it.

Dat's when I gits a massive brainstorm on how we kin makes us some extra bucks! We grabs da boxes of outta expired Ice Creams, shoves 'em in da fridge, which is stil kinda cool, and whips us up a sign real quick like. Bam! We're in da Ice Creams Vendin' business! We only sold t'ree or four of 'em before da cops nabbed us for sellin' stuff widdout a street vendor's licence. We give 'em da rest of 'em and dey let us off widda warnin' dis time. Y'know, if we'da sold alla dem t'ings we'da made enuff t' pay da dump fee and had just enough left over t' buy us a case or two. Man, it's tough runnin' a small business dese days...

  • I started this project before the godz of freebiedom limited the parameter of "car". If they deem it outside the scope of the contest, I will graciously yield. In any case I had fun searching for all the stuff to make the render. If anyone is looking to do a racetrack scene, the first item under freebies, "10th Anniversary Freebie - Speedway Props by mapps", is AWESOME, there is so much more in it that I didn't even use, and everything is wonderfully textured. If anyone has a link to a better traffic light with textures on the lights, I would be grateful!

    Title: The Test Drive?

Don't tell me she's going to be stuck with the Fiat...

All your links check out, and you've given the theme a good spin.

    ENTRY ACCEPTED

You know she is going to be stuck with the Fiat! Nice render Kismet... clever way to highlight a lot of different car models too!

Lord Ganthor- Love it. I used to spend 5 hours every Sunday afternoon, spring through fall, in one of the family parks in the near suburbs of Detroit. At times there were as many as five different ice cream trucks competing for the business of 20 kids.... one ice cream truck jingle is bad enough on auto repeat, but when the effect is ice cream truck duelling banjos....ahhhhhh! And the trucks were as health code concious as your render. This image is amusing to me partly because it is so close to being true! Ahh, the memories. I miss Michigan...
