Cool.
Glad to be here!
Tom
Okay, I am taking your advice. :-)
Here is another view, just a test render...
Tom
I agree.
But you will want them when they are released.
These are the Droids, you are looking for... :-)
Tom
Nothing in particular. And you?
Are you trying to get me to say something?
Really... ? is not a question, is it?
How about hello.
Tom
Image for my signatiure
Yes, hello... I do not try to make you say anything and I do not see why I would do such a thing.
Hi Dreamland! Count me in as another Daz Studio user who is a fan of your creations over at Rendo. I've purchased some of your blocks with Victorians in them just to use the houses in other scenes -- they are so beautiful.
I see that you plan to convert some materials of current models to Iray, and you're wondering if you can just use the same set of materials for 3Delight. In my limited experience, the answer is unfortunately no. Iray is physics-based, but 3DL isn't, so a lot of the Iray specs go right out the window in translation, as 3DL doesn't know what to do with them.
I use 3DL only, so I often apply the default 3DL shader to Iray stuff so I can use my preferred render engine. Spec, trans, SSS, refraction, etc., don't really translate easily in the conversion. They need to be adjusted manually for best results, which I don't really do because I am lazy. Thus if you made Daz Studio compatible models with Iray materials, both 3DL and Iray users could use the products, but only the latter could use them without customizing the materials.
Maybe others can chime in on the subject as well...

Hi!,
Cool, good to meet you!
Tom
Hi MW,
Thanks for the good advice and compliment.
My original thinking it this.
Bring the model into Daz and make the IRay material set,
then make the 3DLight material set.
Does that sound resonable to you?
Tom
Nice work Tom, your modeling looks very clean. Like the new banner also! You seem to be getting along with DS very well!
thanks for sticking around!
Thanks for the reply! If you are willing to do the high volume of work in making two sets of materials for your models, which have large numbers of surfaces, then go for it! I love your modeling so much that I would buy your Daz-based stuff, even if Iray only, just because it's of such high quality.

Hi FS,
You are welcome and thanks for telling me it is okay to continue this thread.
Here is another view of Movie Sets: City Block One
Tom
Hi MW,
No promises as it depends on what I discover in the proccess.
It takes a long time to create these materials, as they each have a very specific purpose of their own.
Time will tell.
Here is another test render.
Getting close on the Poser version.
The modeling is all done and the rigging. Just finishing up the materials and cameras.
128 cameras so far, and counting... :-)
Tom
Hey Tom, glad to have you here at DAZ and seeing these low poly versions of your works of art. I have a few of your items such as the drive in theatre and city block 20. Most recently purchased the fire station in MS CB 07.
I don't use Poser but do use poser products such as yours in DAZ Studio 4.6 and they work just fine. When I render, I use either 3Delight or Luxrender. I never bothered with Iray.
Movie Sets: River Front says Poser only. I know some of the Dreamland Models work in Daz Studio but that not all the materials translate. Does River Front work at all in Daz Studio or does it have so many features that are Poser ony that it would be a complete bust in DS?
Hi Barefoot,
Thanks for the welcome. Glad you have gotten some use out of my Poser versions.
Still going to do Daz versions for 3DLight and IRay as far as I know.
Might be only one of them. ill just have to wait and see it it is feasible.
Tom
I would not want to mislead you on this topic as I am very new to Daz Studio.
From everything that I have seen so far,
morphs work fine.
Rigging works fine.
Poses work fine.
Just loaded The River Front product into Daz Studio for the first time and tried the controls.
The River Water morphs are funtioning the way they should.
The Sky Dome which is supposed to turn one degree at a time turns like it is on fire. Not sure how to slow it down.
In Poser it is called the Sensitivity setting.
Can't seem to find the = to it in Daz.
The trees render somewhat, as they are very simple materials.
Just tried Low Poly Block One to see if the poses work and wow! They are lighting fast!
I am very excited to learn more about Daz Studio, because every time I load the program,
I discover something else that blows me away about it.
Such as how fast the poses are.
If you are worried about having to do a lot of work to make this product work in Daz studio I would say wait and see if I can get this to work in Daz.
My biggest issue in Daz is getting my puddle shader to work, as well as my grass textures.
Here is a look at what I mean.
As you can see the Puddles material goes across multiple zones and is quite difficult to duplicate in Daz.
Not impossible as I am getting closer to being able to reproduce the same results.
But to be able to do so for two different render engines is a whole other story. :-)
Poser render.
Tom
Where Dreamland Models shines is it's 1945 - 1959 buildings and props that have a nostalgic look and feel to them. They fit into a New Haven, CT beach side scene and surrounding area for instance.
Terrific news to see you here Tom. I'm a fan from way back, but gave up on Poser a few years ago with the great migration to DS. I've just been using DS since the Spring and am loving it. I'd love to see Iray, but would probably convert from 3DL if that was the only option. Iray users tend to use HDRI skys or some other solution and it is perfectly acceptable to publish without a sky dome. I wish I knew more about puddles, but some have pulled it off, so it must be possible.
Two thumbs up for the time period. A big feature for me is most of the clothing and car models are garden variety normal rather than supercars and warrior women. I suspect your offerings will encourage more period clothing, automotive and other products.
Much as I'm tempted I'm going to refrain from the Poser models and save up my pennies for the introduction of the DS flavor .. and probably buy more than I should.
Like several here I have bought several of your products from the other store. I have most of the blocks along with the 81 blocks set. I can make them work ok but always wanted the puddles and snow. (I think you did snow on a few of them, I may be wrong.)
I can't wait to see what you do here at Daz. Your sets always make me want to do some Twin Peaks style renders as they have a sort of sleepy small-town vibe to them!
Usually the setting is preserved so there may be something else going on here, but in general click the gear icon on the right-hand end of the slider and then Parameter Settings to get a dialogue with the options for limits, hidden, locking, and sensitivity.
Thanks so much Tom for your detailed answer! I had your "Movie Sets, 81 Blocks" on my Wishlist at the other site for ever, but was always hesitant about how it would work in Daz. With what you shared, enough seems to work for me to take the chance on this. Of course, I'll look forward to more Daz specific versions of your products as you figure it all out.
I want to let you know that your work inspires me even though I haven't bought any of the models. I don't have any ideas for renders set in the era you are addressing but the quality of your work has inspired me to improve my own. I'm going to be making some sci-fi city sets in the next few months and after seeing yours and Stonemason's products (among others) I can say mine will be better than they would be without your work to look at.
You may find it easier to do 3DLight materials first if you're going to do both. I think there are scripts available to translate 3DLight materials for iRay, but not the other way around. The automatic conversions would need manual tweaking but the process is still made faster and easier by the script. Check what I've said here though because this info may be out of date.
I wanted to post my first images from using Movie Sets: River Front in Daz Studio. Rendered in 3DL. These use the skydome that comes with the River Front set and lights from First Bastion's Wilderness:Two Creeks. The water, grass, roads, sidewalks, crosswalks, and wharf appear white when loaded, so I used some of the 3DL shaders I have as replacements. I also added in several of the Movie Sets: Low Poly blocks I own. Since those are from the Daz store, they all come in with suitable DS materials and I didn't need to add any.
I found the trees to be pretty dark, so I upped their Ambient Strength to 50% so they are brighter at this distance. On the other hand, I noticed in the closeup view that all the windows and some of the walls in the Low Poly blocks were blindingly bright (image 2). Turns out the Specular strength is set at 100%. To make a quick change, I selected all the surfaces in a block and reset the Specular Strength to 15% (which some of the surfaces already had). That made it much more acceptable (image 3). EDIT: I originally said ambient strength but it was Specular strength set at 100%.
I'm liking what I am seeing. I like the grand setting of this set and think it has lots of potential. I'll be taking a look at iray renders too. My only concern with getting this Poser version is it will be pricey if I have to rebuy it when a DS version is released, but I'll take my chance on that and keep this one.
Here's another render. I added in the Steel Town Refinery in the background. I'm using Low Poly Blocks 6, 7, 8, and 9. This was a 3DL render that took 40 seconds to complete.
(Note: I took out the block closest to the river in the previous series of images I posted and replaced it with #6. I didn't notice that it's missing all it's textures. That's true for Blocks 3 & 4 (I don't have 1 and 2) - no textures when loaded into DS. I uninstalled and reinstalled but still no textures loading. The textures are in the runtime, so something isn't right and I've submitted a help ticket.)
A few more than I'll stop. These have an added church and instances of several of the city blocks to fill out the scene. Since you can rotate the instances, and each side of a block has a distinct look, instancing works well.
I also tested out the cameras. There are 72 that go to specific street intersections and 119 free form cameras that show different views. Although made for Poser, they get you in the right spot. I find I need to lower the Focal Length from 95 to something around 75 to match the view in the presets.
The materials are hit and miss (remember, this is for Poser and I'm using it in Daz). The grass materials do a good job of varying color for distant views. The snow, puddles and river water aren't of much use at this time but I have enough of my own shaders to compensate.
I saw those! I've bought 3 of them already. I had them on my Rendo wishlist but bought them here instead... This is awesome news. I love your city sets and use them extensively for the old town part of the city in my comic (Liberty Lass).
For those who may not have tried it, I have had very good results doing automatic Iray conversions using the conversion script on these sets with almost no other tweaking required. *A few* of the textures have trouble holding up under extreme close-ups but for normal use, these things look just as good in Iray as they do in 3DeLight or Firefly.
EDIT:
This page uses several of the City Sets, converted to Iray using auto-convert. Look pretty darn good IMO.
re: "...I have had very good results doing automatic Iray conversions using the conversion script..."
This conversion script - is it something included with DL's products sold on THIS site? Is it avaolable over at the other store, for those of who hwo purchased there? Thanks for any insight - Ray
