Edwardian/late Victorian (1890 to 1914) formal wear and "Gibson Girl" hairstyle

I've been able to locate a great many items in the Daz 3D store, Renderoisty, and elsewhere with a "steampunk" theme, many of which can serve well for late Victorian or Edwardian Era fashion. However, the selection is tilted heavily toward daytime wear, lingerie and accessories (hats, gloves, boots, jewelry, etc.) All of those are fine but I need to find two other categories of items:

1) Formal wear (i.e., evening dresses or ballgowns) in the general 1890's/Edwardian Era/Belle epoque style - think the kind of gown that the "Gibson Girl" wore in Charles Dana Gibson's famous drawings, or evening gowns like those in Titanic and the first season of Downton Abbey. See the Wikipedia entry here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1900s_in_fashion

2) Speaking of the Gibson Girl, I also need to find hairstyle items that look like, or can be morphed to look like, the big round pompadours that were so characteristic of women's hairstyles in the 1900's. Again, see the Wikipedia entry on the Gibson Girl for several representative examples:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_Girl

Regency Era gowns, such as Sensibility and its expansions, won't quite cut it for this purpose (unless we're talking about 1910-1914 dresses which recaptured the Empire waist style in some ways).

The MFD (Morphing Fantasy Dress) and it's expansion packs can be used to create a good many different styles. Check Page 7 of my site (link in my sig bar) to see what I mean. It also has the advantage of having versions for almost all DAZ 3D's female figures, and textures fit almost all of them The Steph petite one is the only one which is mapped differently

As regards hair, this one is possibly the nearest you will get (You can remove the braids)

    http://www.daz3d.com/shop/wild-orchid-hair

I actually used a very old V3 hair in one of my promo's. A free one at that. I will see if I can find a link to it.

Edited, ok found it, here it is. http://www.sharecg.com/v/15881/browse/11/Poser/V3-Lady-Jane

As I said it is old, and for V3, but can be resized to fit others as it is a HR2 hair, not a conforming one.

Will look into that. There's also an outfit called The Victorian Era which would be perfect except for the elbow-length sleeves; however, it no longer seems to be sold at the Daz store.

EDIT: Just looked at your site, and indeed several of the MFD mods are very much along the line of what I'm looking for. Thanks! One thing I'd want to do would be to change the MFD base to get the "leg-of-mutton" short-sleeve effect that was so popular in the 1890's and early 1900's. I also consider setting up a morph/mod to replicate the S-curve and "pouter pigeon" silhouettes that were characteristic of 1900's fashion. And I'd like to try to find something that looks like the so-called "Merry Widow" hat (the ones with all the feathers and flowers) that was also another hallmark of 1900's ladies' fashion. For other accessories, long gloves are no problem; I can just reuse the long gloves (with white or black mat) from the V4 Leather Teddy set, and button/lace-up ankle boots are available in several steampunk clothing sets such as Steampunk Saloon at Renderosity.

Speaking of long gloves (elbow-length or "opera-length"), by the way, is there any set currently available that includes gloves in the "mousquetaire" style, that is, the kind of glove which has an opening at the wrist closed by buttons - usually three - or snaps? That style was universal in the Belle Epoque and is still standard today.

Gloves are somewhat lacking, and styles are limited I am afraid.

Another outfit which you may like to check out is this one http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/bliss-for-v4/59317

I have a habit of using parts of various different outfits and "Kit Bashing" to get a particular style, when I can;t fine what I need, but then I have been at this for a while and do have a lot of content.

A nice hat with this dress http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/extravaganza-iii-for-v4-or-alice/61539 there is also another hat in his Extravaganza 1

Victorian era is a bit out of your time line really, it's mid 1850's to 1860's in style. You seem to be looking for the later Victorian era,

check page 5 of my site to see more from the mid 19th century, using various outfits, including some where I have mixed and matched parts from different outfits.

Page 1 has some outfits made by Jan19, with my textures, including one which she called Belle Epoch. http://www.sharecg.com/v/35250/gallery/11/Poser/The-Belle-Epoch

Looks like I'll have to do some kit-bashing of my own to get what I want in this area too! Bliss looks good though the base seems to have the long sleeve, I'd need to modify it to make it short-sleeved (evening gowns in the 1890-1914 period were generally short-sleeved with prominent decolletage, so long gloves were worn to balance those effects).

As regards hairstyles, Vanity Hair also looks promising. It's really basically an 18th-century style but I wonder if it could be modded to get a more Belle Epoque effect, and the feathers/plumes are just right for the period (ladies often wore plumes in their hair for evening during the 1890-1914 period).

EDIT: Just found this free hairstyle at Renderosity:

    http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/details.php?item_id=62422

The part in the middle is much more mid-19th century (1840's to 1860's) than Belle Epoque, but it might be moddable.

Based on my research so far, I think I could put together quite a creditable Belle Epoque evening ensemble kit-bashing from the following:

Lingerie and shoes/boots: Victorian Innocence/expansions (from Runtime DNA) or Steampunk Saloon/Steampunk Socialite/expansions (Renderosity)
    Hair: Wild Orchid
Gown: MFD with one of your add-ons
Gloves: recycled from one of Billy-T's sets (he seems to have the best long gloves) such as V4 Leather Teddy or V4 Leather Corset

FURTHER EDIT: Correct, early Victorian through 1870's is too early. Basically, anything during the time period beginning with the 2009/2011 Sherlock Holmes movies (set at the end of the 1880's/early 1890's) and ending with the first season of Downton Abbey (1912-1914) is the time period I want.

I have added some links to my previous post, I notice you have already found Victorian innocence.

Looked at the Alice hat and the Belle Epoch dress. The hat is really mid-Victorian and would need a much wider brim to fit the 1890-1914 period (remember how people always used to complain during that era about how the hats women wore were so durned huge that it blocked their view at the theater, etc.?), but the dress is perfect for the 1910-1914 timeframe (the hairstyle in the demo picture is all wrong, of course!)

Victorian Innocence and its expansions Boutonniere and Forbidden are ideal for late-Victorian/Edwardian lingerie, I think. There's an inexpensive set at Renderosity called, prosaically, the V4 Victorian Outfit which looks very nice but which seems to come only in basic white - though that might really not be so much of a drawback considering that white was the standard color for lingerie, certainly for "respectable" ladies, during that period! (It doesn't include a corset, which would have to be taken from some other set like VI or Steampunk Saloon/Socialite.)

    And still more links,

http://www.daz3d.com/shop/edwardian-suit with extra textures on page 14 of my site This is day wear, of course.

I do tend to specialise in mid Victorian period. But have strayed on many occasions to earlier or later.

And another very old item, but can be useful as it morphs into different shapes, and has several add on feathers and things

The Edwardian Suit is a fine example of 1910-1914 day dress (as are your additional textures) and the suit's hat would be perfect with the addition of millinery ornaments (especially if those ornaments could be adapted from the Stephanie hat), but it still has the long-sleeve "problem". For winter wear this isn't really an issue, but many day dresses for spring or summer wear had elbow-length or between-elbow-and-shoulder-length sleeves complemented by long gloves.

It seems apparent that somebody needs to mod the basic Edwardian Suit texture to produce short sleeves, or else create a new outfit for daytime Belle Epoque wear with short sleeves which is suitable for spring/summer scenes.

EDIT: Fur accessories will also be needed; not fur coats as such, but fur stoles/muffs were de rigueur for cool-weather ladies' outfits throughout the period. And, in all honesty, even winter outfits didn't necessarily have to be long-sleeved; I've seen many photo postcards of theatrical actresses from the period where they were wearing winter-type outfits with fur stoles and muffs but their coats were elbow-length with matching/complementing elbow-length gloves.

Unfortunately we who like to do "Period" renders do tend to not get a lot of attention. There is a thread somewhere, which was started in the old forum, called "The Historical Closet, but that tends to have more people who are into Medieval stuff.

WE keep getting told Historical doesn't sell. Yet you only have to look at my site, and see my visit figures to see how many people are interested, and most of my site tends to be Historical.

Thank heavens for steampunk, eh? If it weren't for that genre, us Victorian fans would probably be left clean out in the cold. As it is, like I said before, I can draw enough items from various steampunk sets to make reasonably accurate 1890-1914 "unmentionables" sets and daytime wear (the top hats and dresses, for example, can be adapted into riding outfits).

EDIT: I shouldn't forget jewelry. Many of the available sets have things like cameos/chokers and earrings, of course. One key item of 1890-1914 jewelry, however, was the so-called "dog collar" choker-style pearl necklace which was popularized by Princess (later Queen) Alexandra. This sometimes had, sometimes didn't, a cameo at the front. It was very frequently worn with evening dress. Does any set (including modern ones) include a "dog collar" style necklace?

Yeah I have bought a few Steampunk outfits to use for just that purpose. Nowadays I tend to look at a new outfit to see if I can mix bits of it with something else, rather than buy it to use "As Is"

Got home from work a few minutes ago and went to get The Belle Epoch from CGShare and then your own extra textures for the gown. It's a good start! (I see from your site that you can make textures on request if you have the original model. Could I prevail on you to take a stab at making up some Edwardian formal gowns from the Belle Epoch base? I have a lot of pictures of gowns from the era if you need models.)

I honestly haven't had time to do many textures, since I volunteered to be a moderator. It seems to take up a lot of my time. I have several requests, and haven't started on any of them.

If I do get a chance I will, but I have 2 requests with time frames on them, as prizes for contests I really have to do. :red:

Of course - whenever you can get around to it will be fine. It's not like I have nothing else to do in Daz while I'm waiting, anyway. ;)
