edited February 2015 in Carrara Discussion

A New Year has arrived.
We have reflected over the passing year, and we are now wondering over what will the future bring us.

So the theme is :

What is happening on this day :
Friday, February 15, 2515
Friday, II.XV.MMDXV
Stardate 192123.28
Chinese New-Year eve. The year of the Wood Rabbit
And a few other events on this day : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_15

Will we manage to live in peace with each other, or will we destroy the earth in an apocalyptic war or disaster.
Have we established colonies in outer space and has Mars gained its Independence, or are they still revolting.
Is the Internett now being implanted into your head when you are born.
Is ET arriving or leaving earth. Is or was he.she,it a friend or foe.
Does your domestic trained robot servant having it's Assembled Day.
Or did you just run out of hydrogen on your fusion-generator, just when the Championship-match of fotball went on the holosphere.

Make a picture that tells a story about what's going to happen on that day.

A huge thanks to Daz3D and Nightshift3D for their support and sponsorship in this event.
1st place: $100.00 towards DAZ 3D owned item(s) & 3 items from Nightshift3d shop
2nd place: $50.00 towards DAZ 3D owned item(s) & 2 items from Nightshift3d shop
3rd place: $25.00 towards DAZ 3D owned item(s) & 1 item from Nightshift3d shop
Honorable mention: $10.00 towards DAZ 3D owned item(s) &1 item Nightshift3d shop

And don't forget to visit Nightshift3d shop
Their might be some usefully products there, that you can use in this challenge.

Rules:
For everyone:
- Each participant may submit up to 2 images into the Challenge (but only 1 images per artist will be eligible to win a prize, if 2 images from same artist get prize-winning number of votes, the image with most votes will win the prize it’s eligible for, and the second prize will go to another artist’s runner up image). Votes will be counter per-image.
- All renders must be specially created for this challenge and previously unpublished.
- The images must be set up and rendered in Carrara or in the external renderer for which an intermediate Carrara plug-in is available (like LuxRenderer or Octane)
- Content and Plugin use are allowed and welcome, but MUST be fully credited in the contest thread when your entry is posted.
- 2 (two) items must be created or significantly modified inside Carrara
- At least 2 (two) WIP (work in progress) images must be posted in the WIP thread. At least one WIP image must be a screen grab of the setup of objects and lights in Carrara
- Postwork is allowed and welcome, but raw render(s) must be posted to the WIP thread (in addition to the 2 required WIP images) and the postwork must be fully described.
- The winner of the 1st place gets to host the next Carrara challenge, picking the theme and the rules to their liking.

What are “created or significantly enhanced” objects?
1) Creating an object in Carrara’s vertex modeler, the spline modeler, the metaball modeller, the plant editor, or terrain editor
2) Morphing or modifying an object (including a primitive) beyond recognition or cutting parts from it, and using it for something completely different.
3) Covering an object with fur or creating dynamic hair for it.
4) Rigging and using that rig to pose an object.
5) Altering or creating UV-maps, or creating special shaders or textures.
6) Using the 3D-paint feature to texture the object or create shaders, shader masks, distribution maps, etc.
7) Creating unique variations of things like plants, oceans, particle generators, terrains, clouds, etc.
8) Inventive use of replicators. Just replicating an object doesn’t count as significantly enhanced, but creating new shapes using replicated objects does, or using distribution maps or nested replicators to create environments or interesting concepts would also count.

If you are not sure whether your enhancements qualify, please ask in this thread.

    Well, let's see...
It's a Friday... it's two days after my 544th birthday... it's 24 years after Buck Rogers returns to Earth, but still 1,479 years before Thundarr the Barbarian rides... :)

Great theme Varsel - lots of ideas already to sort through.

I'm happy to sponsor a contest with such a cool theme. Kudos to Varsel for coming up with it. Looking forward to the entries, I can't wait to see what's going on 500 years from next Thursday. Hopefully we'll finally have those flying cars and Mister Fusion units we were supposed to have this year.

500 years from now? There are many directions for people to take this theme. Can't wait to see what people come up with. I'm looking at some of Nightshift's rayguns now.

I'm also asking myself a bunch of questions to start brainstorming.

What would a city look like? Seaside resort? Mountain chalet? Public park?
What materials will we use for construction? For energy?
What kinds of tools and machines will we have invented?
What would a car, ship, or plane look like? Jet backpack?
How will children be learning? Schools? Insert a microchip in the back of the head?
What kinds of games will children play?
How will teenagers court each other? Still have a prom?
How will teenagers rebel against their parents? What would a pop concert look like?
What would a job interview be like?
What about a wedding ceremony or reception?
How will people shop for food and other everyday sundries?
What kinds of jobs will people have? What will workplaces be like?
What will retirement be like? What will we do as we get older? What would a funeral be like?
What would an art museum be like? How will people express their creativity?
Will people still attend sporting events? Gamble in casinos? Attend plays?
What would a political event be like? Religious ceremony?
What events would be in the Olympics?
What would the Earth look like from space?
Will we have colonies on other planets?
Will we still have wars, and if so, how could we survive?
Will Carrara 9 be released? ;-)

    Plus from classic scifi

Will we have a gem in our palm and be killed when we reach 30?
Will we be ruled by damned dirty apes?
Will soylent green be made of people?
Will "civilized" people escape underground with mutants on the surface? Vice versa?
Will idiots have flooded the gene pool because average people have 1 or fewer child per woman?
Will our machines have overthrown us? Use us for the source of their energy?
Will we have abdicated our active lives to machines?
Will aliens preemptively attack us when we can reach further out into space?
Will a monopoly on air production for a dome on Mars allow a man to become a tyrant?
Will a space exploring vessel return with an alien in someone's stomach?

So much to spark the imagination. Great choice, Varsel.

Unfortunately, 2515 is 10 years too early for Cleopatra.

On Friday, February 15, 2515 I will wake up with an amazing hangover, caused by drinking too much champagne to celebrate my cryogen defreeze ...

Nice work Varsel. And I must say your image for the last challenge was wonderful.

Cleopatra 2525 - that brings back memories...
but they would only be about 9 years old, and Cleo would still be at sleep in her tube...
And you wouldn't give a 9 years old weapons like they use in that show.
You shouldn't even give them scissors ...

I'm not sure if Carrara 9 has been released but hopefully we have come to version 89,5 and keep nagging for version 90.
But one thing I'm sure about is that Daz3D has released Victoria 55, with her superior artificial intelligence, has taken over your holo-projector, and and are using your credit card to buy the outfits and shoes that she wants.

My winning image did cause me a lot of complications... not only do I have to host this latest event in the Carrara community, but it did spark some interest from my colleagues and from my boss, so now I have to optimize it and have it printed out on posters...

I'm really looking forward for your entries.
So look deep into the crystal ball, and give us your prediction of what the future will bring us.

    Zoey in the middle?

Very good! The actress is Gina Torres, but she also played Zoey on Firefly. It is unfortunate that Gina was not able to find equally high-brow productions after Cleopatra 2525 was cancelled. Maybe they will do a reboot of Cleopatra 2525 so that the dramatic talents of three young actresses can be the main focus again. :)

So we can use GoZ plug-in for Zbrush since it is classified as a plug-in by Daz? :)

From the Carrara GoZ (DAZ store)
"The GoZ Plugin for Carrara enables the interchange of models and textures between Zbrush and Carrara. With this plugin for Carrara, you can now take a model seamlessly between Zbrush and Carrara to leverage the respective strengths of both tools in your 3D creation pipeline."

    It's a plug-in, so no problem..
As long as you assemble and render in Carrara, you could use any program and/or plug-ins to create stuff to use in your picture.

I'll get the WIPs started. Here is a quick concept sketch of an orbiting forest.

    - I inserted a vertex model.
    - Used construct, 3d, oval.
    - Used the polyline tool (circle setting)
    - Used the sweep (regular) function to create the tube
    - Used seams to create a uvmap (had weird narrowing that I had to correct)
    - Created shading domains for the inner and outer ring
    - Created spokes and an axel to fit he tube
    - Inserted a plain tree and scaled it down
    - Used caps lock to adjust the tree hot point (had to rotate 180 degrees for my intention).
    - Replicated the tree on the inner surface of the outer shading domain of the tube.
    - Applied a glassy shader to the inner ring of the tube.

    Just a quickie.

Edit : I also used the ring function to select just the slices of the tube and then used extract around so that the tube would look jointed. In other words, I wanted the tube even less smooth.

Edit 2 : I added another test render with revised space stations with two forests.

EP, there I was getting my hopes up, then I looked at the date !!!!!!!

    Excellent choice Varsel.

Would love to enter this one, but looks like a combination of real world stuff with sorting out my downloads will make me a lurker this time around. There are a couple of my DAZ duf's I could throw together but I think I will be better off this time with any spare time going into finishing off my last 2 entries. Still have to add the details to my Dragon Boat which I want to do while the ideas are still fresh, and have an unfinished spaceship in Silo2 looking for some action, then there are the renders of both to do.

    Diomede, great start.

    Regards, Bunyip

Question - I am constructing an orbiting forest. Can I use the little gardener robot that I made for a prior challenge?

You can still go for a Silent Running 2515 theme. Can never be enough tributes made to it. I'm thinking more along the lines of a Noah's ark approach, in which the first animals will be delivered to the orbiting forests. My forests will be more like wheel space station than the pods in Silent Running. I just thought I could add interest to the space stations if there were some robots milling about - and I already had some.

After further reflection, I assume I can use my robot, it just shouldn't count it as one of the two items customized for this challenge (unless I customize it more). Right?

I can't see any problem with that. I have been doing that all the time myself.
And since it was pre-made this contest, it could count as content, and you have to give credit to yourself

When it comes to Serenity/Firefly references, I'm totally onboard, but I've never heard of this Silent Running you guys are mentioning before. I remember a Mike and the Mechanics song called 'Silent Running' in the 80's that I can't find anywhere anymore, but that's as close as I'm getting. Is it a movie? I'd better go google...

@Varsel - Fun idea. I trust you to include something intriguing on the operating table! Invention? Cross breeding plants and animals? New perfume? Wait, don't tell. I want to be surprised.

@Bunyip - Hope you get a chance to finish what you have in mind. It is a substantial start!

@Misty - Don't worry, no one is expected to have a concrete idea yet. Lots of time. I'm pretty much always doodling in the WIP thread at the beginning of each challenge. Bumps the thread up, if nothing else.
