Dover used to have loads of what were effectively coloring books for adults. Still does, so far as I know.

  • My sister in law and friends have gone nuts over colouring in books for adults, I totally am baffled by it.

But then they are baffled by my doing 3D art cheeky

Whenever I read or hear "coloring books for adults"... Let's just say my mind heads towards the gutter devil

It's got to be cheaper just to buy kids coloring books and color those in instead... cheeky

I've contemplated working on color sheets for grownups. Something to do. ;)

Okay, not what I was expecting... Sorta more like stuff that would use the various flesh tones... One of my daughters has a coloring book similar to what they show... No bunnies or princesses... More like ornate patterns and Mandelas.  I was actually more interested in the light up foam lightsaber link (think Nerf sword, but it glows) I found on the bottom... Sounds cool, but not enough info.

Coloring books for adults are very very popular.  They tend toward patterns.  Do a search on amazon.  some of them are truly beautiful. They are nice to have around when you need to be creative and unwind and you just are too tired to really DO anything.  also great for very long car rides

It strikes me as similar in kind to jigsaw puzzles.

  • I used to be mad on huge jigsaw puzzles but then when I had 5 cats I dropped the hobby never to return, it was just too hard keeping what I had intact.

  • I've been coloring those big poster pages that come in the tubes for years. They just shrunk them down to more portable sizing.

  • maybe some ideas as to how to best render these?

tried lineart in iClone with filters in Gimp

I still have my Anatomy and Physiology color books from Dover.  It was the required text for the A&P course for Fine Arts majors.

You don't have Photoshop? There are some really neat plug-ins that do that. Also, Topaz Labs. But for a free one, fotosketcher!

    LOL!!!!   Me too!

  • Studies show that coloring has a medatative-like effect, and is extremely beneficial for mental and neurological health.

I tried it on my Genie, I think there's going to be too much or too little detail. I changed the intensity, edge detection, etc. But there's several pen and ink in addition to the pencil, so you may want to play with it. It's a wonderful program, for other things too. Don't have anymore time to play with it today. This is Pencil Sketch 4. The second, probably more along the coloring book concept, is Pen And Ink Sketch 2

NIce work Novica...must admit I've been tempted by the new Posers ability to do black and white renders over in sneak peak threads. It would be great for doing colouring pages.

I want to make coloring pages with daz studio and maybe Photoshop.

I saw the adult coloring books at Barnes and noble at the mall.

  • Beautiful work, David.  Are these original line drawings?

  • Nope, they're just 3d line renders with a little clean up.

  • Now that was what I wanted to do

    Well done and beautiful, davidedwards.me.

Could you share some tips about, how did you created them, please.

  • Everything you see in the images, except the sky lines are 3d. I simply composed all the 3d elements together and rendered with a line render. The setup is fairly effortless. I composed the 3d elements in 3ds Max, applied a white shader and rendered the lines using Vray. Do a google search on "Vray toon" if curious :)

    The choice of 3d program really isn't relevant though, most 3d programs, including blender, have the ability to render a line render. Cinema 4d has very powerful NPR render options. I'm really surprised Daz has such a weak set of tools for this given it leans itself more towards illustrators. The existing toon render options are very week, they simple posterize the image, there's no inteligence behind 3d edge detection. You can create similar images with the posterizing effect that Daz renders, however the effect is less clean and detailed. This involves rendering the image at around 4096 or greater, with a single direct light from the camera position, taking the image into photoshop, applying;

    Filter > noise > Median (around 2-3%)

Filter Gallery > Artistic > Poster (settings; 8,4,1)

Filter > Stylized > Edge Detection

    Image > Adjustment > Desturate

Image > Adjustment > Threshold (Adjust slider to right until the lines begin to return)

    Filter > Blur > Guassian Blur > 0.5

Thats probably the best options for anything that gives posterising rendering (like Daz)

You'll always need to go over the render and do a lot of clean up, removing unwanted lines etc :)

The most difficult step is simply coming up with ideas given there's so many options!

    David

DoodleArt!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember those! I had one years ago, when my son was little - my mother and I bought one each, and had an absolute ball colouring those in. :)

I find colouring in to be a very zen like thing for me - my mind drifts and it's almost like....meditation for me. I've always loved colouring in, and years ago I got some of those Dover publications adult colouring in books. And now that it's the big Next Thing, I too have become hooked on them again. :)
