Warner Brothers Suicide Squad contest

In the today newsletter from DAZ a contest is mentioned (https://www.talenthouse.com/i/create-visual-art-inspired-by-suicide-squad) and DAZ generously offers us 1000 Store Credit if we make an entry, label it "DAZ" in the title and win the contest.

Being paranoid as I am, I went to the Official Rules and found the following:

The Work must be artist’s own original work, created solely by artist or content that incorporates materials from the public domain; must not have been previously published, released or distributed in any form; must not have won any award; and must not infringe or violate the copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other personal or proprietary rights of any person or entity. All third party content and content unoriginal to you (except for the Warner IP and content that incorporates materials from the public domain) is prohibited.

Now, I know we retain full license of the assets we purchase and that's the whole point of purchasing it. But the first sentece splits the items in our work in two categories in which I would say the 3D content doesn't fall. It's not created solely by artist and isn't public domain materials. Can someone explain to me if it's then still allowed according to those rules to enter the contest (even if DAZ encourages it)?

You can find full Official Rules for the contest here: https://talenthouse-res.cloudinary.com/image/upload/v1/invites/m910vfpwnqrbblhqc06w

We do not retain full license to the assets we purchase. They are only licensed to create art with.

The art we create is our own and considered original work by us.

  • Yes, I'm sorry. I meant the full license to create 2D art with the assets. Didn't mean other uses.

But then, even if we have this permission, doesn't the above exempt from the rules kinda treat the 3D assets the same way as purchased stock?

  • RawArtRawArt Posts: 6,063

Artwork we make should be fine. I dont see it as stock.

But either way...I entered, and will likely come up with a few more to put in eventually. It is worth trying :)

So, if we decide to create a render, does everything in the render have to be our OWN creation? All the meshes, hair, clothing, props, characters, textures?

If so that means the only thing from Daz we can use really is, just the Daz Studio : D : D : D

  • Well, I bet if you create your own model in Hexagon (or any other program) and make your own textures you can render your final work in DAZ and will be fine according to any rules.

I will probably enter the contest as well, since they don't force you to pay anything even if you don't comply with the rules. But I do find this formulation in the rules "open to interpretation". As an ex-photomanipulator, I remember deviantArt having problems in official contests when people used photo-stock from other people in their works. Undependent of the licensing (as in what is legally allowed to be done with it) what's the difference between purchasing photo-stock and 3D assets? The fact that you have more options with 3D to make it unrecognizable?

  • ToyenToyen Posts: 2,029

Well, I would need at least one 3D human model, and I don't I can model that and texture all by myself just yet : D : D

Hair, clothing, props? Yeah I can do that, but people? From scratch? I'm not quite there yet : D

  • RawArtRawArt Posts: 6,063

Stock photos are different than buying content here.

What we buy here are more like props used in photos. The final creation is entirely your composition. That is the difference.

This line in particular caught my eye: "All third party content and content unoriginal to you (except for the Warner IP and content that incorporates materials from the public domain) is prohibited. "

I think that says pretty clearly that bought content is not allowed..

That line you have to read as it was intended.....to protect from copyright infringement. If they choose a winner and it turns out the artist infringed someone elses copyright in the making of the art, then it would ba a bad situation for them. So that is all that line is trying to address. Has nothing to do with DAZ products.

Really good points.  Let me check into this.  They reached out to us an asked us to support the contest, but you're right... This appears to be fairly restricitve on our (or your) abilityy to do so.  Thanks for pointing this out.

Ok good, because these rules confused me too. And not being able to use purchased 3d assets would be extremely limiting. I mean, I could probably throw together Harley Quinn's hammer eaisly enough in Blender, but anything else.....eh not so much.

  • Reaching out to Talenthouse and Warner to attempt to get clarification.

Oh I hope we will be able to use Daz figures! If so I'm gonna do Harley Quin of course : )

I think that says pretty clearly that bought content is not allowed..

Think of it as Daz models are like the paints and brushes or the camera and film. I don't think WB expects everyone to make their own paints, build their own cameras and multch their own paper.

Good to hear it's being looked at. Thanks, Steve.

I think your view is the ethical way to look at it. But the rules are more harsh than that. Although one couldn't tell what paint you used in your work, one could often recognize bits of content in one's piece. Also, say you would purchase photoshop brushes for your work. Is that the same (according to those rules) as normal brushes? I have my doubts when I read it.

Yeah, not much chance of me winning, either, but I'm seriously thinking of doing something with Harley Quinn.  She inspires me!

...I would put something up but there probably is already a plethora of Harley pics just because she is so screwball and thus the fave of a lot of fans. Katana just doesn't have the same expressive personality.

Currently working on Tiny Tina from Borderlands anyway.

I'm working on one, but I'm having to break out my limited texturing skills that I learned from DestinysGarden so it takes me a little bit longer to do things.  I thought I'd do one of both of the girls, Harley Quinn and Katana. Still trying to figure out how I'm going to do the mask on Katana, though.  I'm not sure I have anything even close to start with that I could retexture so I'm still looking into that.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with, Knittingmommy! I skimmed through the entire rules but couldn't find any requirements about aspect ratio, resolution, etc. of still images - have you seen anything?

Thanks Rawn - I think I may play around a bit if I can steal some time. Picked up some pig tails yesterday super cheap:

I've already purchased both Clown Clan and Clown Clan 2 HD, which should give me some perfect skins and morphs to use as a base and start customizing (love these 2 sets - highly recommended). Here's some links in case anybody is interested:

Doh! I forgot about that - already purchased the Urban College Guy so I could create new surfaces for the coat. Don't really need/want it for anything else, so I hope the answer comes back positive. Guess I shouldn't buy anything else until we get word . . .

I would like to give a try, but the only thing I know about the suicide squad is it has the joker and harley (and that was just a guess from an image I had seen before.
