Thanks Kerya. That's actually the same green hair I posted on the previous page - just changed the colour.
BlumBlum - looking good. Garibaldi can do some decent manicured lawn or golf green style grass but not so good for broad grass like the foreground prop. The limits are set up for hair/fur widths so you can't get it large enough for broad grass. You can get the "grass" wider by playing with the render % setting but the results may not look that good. Been a few months since I tried making grass so maybe I'll have to give it another look. :)
Yeah, I was wondering whether playing with the clumping would help with the closer-up long grass but I haven't tried yet. I really want to get cracking and make some actual hair with it but I haven't had the bottle to give it a go yet! Scary stuff, new software!
Would love to see what you can come up with for grass.

As long as you start with something easy, it shouldn't be too hard to get familiar with making hair styles. What you might want to try for starters is something like this...
- set distribution amount to around 150.
- in style tab, use the curl tool (bottom row, second from right) and set the value to 0.4. Don't forget to open the autopart tab and change the value to around 100 to flatten out the wild hairs.
- now use the comb to shape the bangs, sides, etc to suit.
You can make some pretty decent basic hair styles with little more than this and as you become familiar with what the tools are doing you can get more and more fancy.
I see lots of views on this thread, it sure would be nice to see what others are doing with it.
Ok, so here's some grass, man.;-P
While playing with this, I realized that you are never going to be able to get proper broad grass from a hair plugin. Hair is tubular while the broad grass has to be flat. The best you are going to get is cone shaped grass. That's not to say it can't look good - just that it isn't going to be flat. :)
Of course, all the hair on the guy (head, eyebrows, and torso) were all made in Garibaldi as well.
...as long as it isn't used for extreme "close in" shots, it looks pretty good, much better than the old flat grass shaders. The two nice things are, you can get it to follow ground contours and, it doesn't deal with transmaps so render time isn't adversely affected (unless you convert it to a .obj).
I feel guilty for criticising because you obviously know a lot more about Baldy than I do, but I do think your grass looks a lot like fluffy fur and not actual grass. Perhaps more tightly distributed and shorter might make it look more realistic? I don't know. Took me a few tries to get mine looking the way I wanted it.
Love the hair on the fella though, the chest hair especially looks really good. I clearly need to practice.
How bad are render times if you convert a head of hair to a .obj?
...I understand doing so makes it very "heavy" polygon wise.
I would assume a massive amount of polys, yes, but maybe some decimation could work. Something else to play with!

No need to feel guilty --- wasn't that the point I've been trying to make?
Hair is going to look like hair. You can't make it look like tall broad leafed grass. As I mentioned previously, short manicured lawns look ok and as KK said, using it as a distant tall, blurred grass would look ok. But closeup broad grass is always going to look like hair.

Back on page 35 is a short discussion about .obj and decimator. I posted a quick example showing some exported .obj files - what they would look like and how large compared to the Garibaldi hair file.
Another try at long hairy grass.
LOL! Nice render, pose and expression!
The grass could use a different colour/texture, but else it doesn't look bad at all!
Thanks. That's special grass - don'cha know? :)
Actually, the base/tip colour is the same as the previous render. I just used lighter colours in the spec channels.
LOL - but I wouldn't smoke it ... ;)
Smoke??
Why would you want to smoke it when it tastes so delicious? Just ask that loopy chic with the purple hair. :)
Nice grass!!! A great way to use Garibaldi too!!

Has anybody tried using this in Vue?
From what I've read I'd have to export the hair/fur I create as a .obj, which is fine. I'd just feel a little better if I knew that it works in Vue without issue.
Is V1.0.0.1 the latest version?
Are there any more updates planned?
It say's on the Garibaldi site, in the downloads page - fee samples (Don't worry more to come very soon!) It's been that way for quite a while now.
Don't know if anyone connected to this product visits this forum/posting. -
A reply would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Garibaldi uses the Renderman Ricurves so can't be used natively in Vue. You can export as an .obj but you will need to apply your own texture/shader to the .obj. Back on page 35 (post 525) I have a quick comparison of what the .obj files would look like compared to the Garibaldi hair as well as the sizes of the object files.
The exported .obj should work just as well in Vue as any other .obj. Just remember that you will be working with an untextured, unrigged prop object.
On the Garibaldi beta site, you can get version 1.1.0.4. This version is also available as a free hair player. The full version will only work if you already own a paid for copy. There is also a link to a web page with a few more samples/presets to play with.
I've had no issues with this version and I have no idea why it isn't available for general release. Last I heard (a couple of months ago) it was still being worked on and there were plans for a version 2 for sometime next year.
My only connection to this product is as an enthusiastic user. As far as I know, Futurebiscuit is the only one working on it. He is the only one who can tell you what's happening (or not) with the product.
Thanks Gone.
I've no issues with it. its worked like a charm since the day I bought it in March, just noticed that I'm running 1.0.0.1 when I looked at the plugins. I wondered if I was up to date. Obviously not.
Thanks for the reply.
Were you notified via email regarding the update? I've only got the one e-mail regarding registration from Garibaldi. So how can I find the link to the update?
/EDIT Just sent off an email.
There is/was a beta program for version 1.1. You had to sign up to be part of the beta and I assume you had to have purchased 1.0. I'm not sure if you can still sign up to be part of the beta program, but you can certainly email and see if you can get the beta version.
I have been using the last beta for some time with no issues. I also have no idea why it is not available yet through DAZ.
@mark128
Well I'll just have to wait for a reply now. Just strange that I only got the first registration email and nothing else.
On page 33 (post 482) Futurebiscuit has a link to the signup page for the latest version. In the post, the version was called a release candidate and seemed to imply the general release was imminent.
Apparently, not as imminent as I would have thought. :)
Thanks again Gone.
Have registered and I'm now on their forum site. the latest version 1.1 build 19. shows 2 files at 64bit.
1 at 2.65mb and another at 2.66mb, just wondering which one to download.
Cheers.
?EDIT duh one's the player. sorry about that. please ignore silly question above.
Thanks again mate. Cheers.
Yes it seems I fell out of the loop too, I didn't realize there were several new builds for express lol
...well finally got around to creating my first hair. Nothing spectacular but I wanted some whisker like eyebrows for a character. Unable to post here (due to challenge rules) but of you check the RRRR Render Only thread (page 3) you will see it.
BTW played with the clone/heal and after a couple tries to get used to it, works well. Created and saved several "no brows" the skin maps as presets.
Hi,
two question about this plugin:
1. Is it possible to create wet hair e.g. hair soaked with sweat?
2. Is it possible to create Dreadlocks like those saddhus in wikipedia have: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreadlocks ?
Kind Regards
Soooo.... something like this perhaps?
