Weekly freebie is out.. nice toll booth. But guess what? Encrypted! Nice, Daz :(

It's a Daz Original, not a PC+ item, and it may be in response to the person, or persons, in this thread who was/were asking for a completely free encrypted item to test it out at no cost... Except you have to be a PC member to get it for free...
    sad

I'll put it in my cart. I can't use it for now, but at some point, I will upgrade to 4.9, (or maybe 4.10 by the time I get my new computer.)

Still, I hope this is an isolated incident, because all of them being for Encrypted DAZ Connect/4.9+ will greatly devalue my PC membership.

Wiat a minute!! Didn't they say at the begining of this thread that they had no intention of encrypting the weekly and monthly freebies? Regardless the fact that they encrypted a freeie pretty much serves as a slap to everyone having issues with this right now. Guess that really shows us what they think.

It's also a test of the resolve of the nay-sayers if you like...

And, umm, my answer is still 'no.pe.'

Winterblack hall was updated in DIM like 15 times after I bought it. How is encryption going to handle this? If the buyer doesn't update to the latest release of an encrypted product will they have screwy things happening?

Older products like that, with DIM files, won't be encrytped. However, huge products will benefit particularly from Daz Connect as once installed with that only the updated files need to be downloaded, not the whole .5GB or whatever it was zip - if you make sure the files are compressed (Batch Connect pane) you can switch to the Connect version by installing from a products list and unchanged files will be copied from the local version, not downloaded - I do see this as a huge benefit given the size of Iray-ready products. Of course this is separate from encryption.

..but if Carrara and/or Poser is also in your pipeline, it won't work in those programmes and that is one of the rubs some of us have with this.

Many PAs would be well aware of their expected sales and would know if excrypting their products is enhancing or restricting sales. Not that there has been much to go by yet, as you say.

The complaints that matter the most aren't going to come from the forums and grunts like us, but when or if vendors jack up about losing money on their products, if that actually occurs.

As all the encrypted products to date have been Daz Originals, the PAs have been paid and it's DAZ taking all the risk of lost sales.

...and this is why I contend DRM could potentially reduce the value of PC+ membership should all DO's end up encrypted. Were Daz also to take this path with PC+ and freebies, I would see little point in continuing my membership.  These are the two categories which are discounted for members.  PA items only receive discounts on initial release (30%) and/or when there is a sale and are open to all customers.

Weekly freebie is out.. nice toll booth. But guess what? Encrypted! Nice, Daz :(

...just what I was afraid of.

Being a (paying) PC+ member has always been a pleasure for me. Until today: When I opened the Daz newsletter, I saw that that the Toll Booth, the actual weekly freebie for PC+ (and free with a purchase for non-members) is Daz Connect only. Which means that to get the promised free product, Daz forces me to upgrade DS to 4.9 and download via DC. Not fair, I think, and a bit brazen. Please correct this asap. And keep in mind: No matter how greedy a company may be, satisfied customers are what it needs to be successful. Even my Daz addiction has its limits. frown

However they can implement DRM.  Gotta love the priorities.

yeah I keep getting vein streatch marks with that . .. when that happens, and  too keep me turning red and veins popping, I use another site to host the image, so I can post it

...the issue is I was looking to use the pic to illustrate a point in a forum here.

Generation X already comes with a measure of protection in that it has a serial key to use to register the plug in. Personally if, and when, this arrives I would be surprised if it is encrypted, but we will have to wait and see.

Shotgun approach now, got a lot to say...

I am a retired professional photographer. Anything else, pen and ink, charcoal, paint... even Photoshop, I'm an amateur. Low skill level, indeed.

Daz Studio has given me the tools I need to create art, to create a webcomic, that I could have never done without it!

I love this program, and the content.

I also respect and like the Daz folks who come on these forums and deal with customer angst. People like Jack Tomlin, Steve, Mike, Chohole...

There are a lot of great people here, not just at Daz, but among the customers. Funny, helpful, intelligent, you name it.

So I have to ask, with all of the good, smart people at Daz... With the great community that has built up here... With the excellent relations between Daz, it's providers, and it's customers...

Just who the heck thought it would be a great idea to come up with a plan that would divide the community the way DRM has?!!?

Really. I was a lurker on the forums long before I became involved, and the tone here has changed for the worse. The sniping, the sarcasm, the personal attacks... What the heck is going on?

People used to come on to the forums because they had a problem that needed to be solved. People are coming to this forum because they have a problem that they don't think will be solved. And they're worried about the future, and their ability to continue creating their art. All of the "at this time" reassurances aren't worth a bucket of warm spit. They've already been broken and the genie of distrust is out of the bottle.

So who at Daz decided that it was worth destroying the trust, increasing customer insecurity, and lowering the tone of the community, to... wait for it... slow piracy down!??!

It won't stop it, we all know that, so... WTF, Daz?

Last week everyone complained there were no real freebies for encrypted to try. This week they put one up and everyone complains. I'm not even on the DRM side and I think they need to do proper testing like this.

Even this is not truely "free" since if you are not a PC member you have to buy something to get it for free.

I assume it's to test the waters, as it was mentioned in one of the other threads -  weekly freebies do have a pretty consistent download rate so it would give a good indication to compare against.

So yea, I wouldn't read anything more into this other than a test to see how it compares against previous downloads. While I'm here though, it's worth mentioning the monthly freebie is also out, and not encrytped.. so the sky isn't falling just yet :)

    Cheers!

[Original Thread Title: "Ouch! That was Close: Toll Booth" - Thread Merged by Moderator]

I have been looking for one of these for a while, so when I saw it as a freebie ... but then, just at the last moment I saw it was DRM'd.

    That was a lucky escape!

Wow you got a newsletter o.o I have to wait houuurs for mine to turn up yet (on average.) Does it take longer to send emails to Australia o.O

I think it's fine. They need to use some regularly appearing type items to get data, and the choice of object and caption is hilarious.

If you don't want a DRM product, you don't have to 'purchase' it. I imagine that is the sort of data they'll be looking at.

Hehe, yeah I made that same mistake. Put it in the cart then decided to check just in case. Removed it when I realised laugh.

I can not see what you can read into this myself, I mean it is free, so many people will pop it into their cart regardless of how they feel about encrypted content. However it does give them another reason to at least try out DAZ connect, which I assume is the real purpose behind this.

Damn it! How did I end up back in this stupid thread again! Lol.

It is just as I suspected though - PC+ is going to become worthless to me in future because its a prime target for Connect-only content. Hence why I'm never renewing my membership again.

Yes, but it's a bit of a sneaky way to get people to install 4.9; and it honestly does DAZ no credit pulling stunts like that. There should be a very clear flash banner across the main product image: "Special Offer Free Product to Let you Try Out Encryption!"

*shrug* Apart from all the other issues I have with encrypted/DRM I already know that I won't be able to arrange the item in my runtime in the way that I see fit. No need to set up a download method I have no intent of using and downloading an item to conclude that hey, I can't arrange my content directory the way I want it to be.

Unless Daz is planning on giving away all Connect-only content for free in the future then this isn't going to show them anything worthwhile... other than that people will download any old tat as long as its free.

They need to test the viability of Connect with normal, full-priced items to get any decent info.
