I was surprised at the time, but also curious as to why the 970 would only contribute 25% towards the render; admittedly it is driving the monitors, even so, with nothing happening, it was a surprise.

My point, if it is consistent, is that although it has half the cuda cores, don't expect the performance gain to translate to rendering from the card you're using for display; other factors will come into play.

I am working on illustrations for a book and want to find a mentor/guru who will work on an hourly basis doing consultation to get me up to speed and help me troubleshoot DAZ Studio issues. I have been working on and off with DAZ Studio and Bryce from the time of their inception. I remember downloading the first edition of DAZ Studio and how terrible it was. They have come a long, long way.

I want to decrease the learning curve for DAZ Studio dramatically. I can do basic things like set up a scene and do posing. But what I want to be able to do is to be able to produce the results shown in many of the ads for DAZ products and from their vendors.

I need help in finding my way around the many complex menus in DAZ Studio, on lighting indoor and outdoor scenes, understanding which products to purchase related to things like lighting, shaders, materials, and add ons, managing cameras, using character morphs effectively, creating realistic expressions, managing clothes, hair, and dynamic fabrics, changing the age of a character, managing shaders, changing the physical characteristics of objects, dealing with fur on animals, upgrading my system (getting a refurbished system with more RAM, faster video card and so on), render options, post work with Photoshop, making decisions about using different render engines like Octagon, Lux Render, IRAY, 3Delight, and others, the possible use of render farms, exporting and importing to/from other rendering and modeling programs like Bryce and Carrera, sky domes and other lighting programs, environments, the proper use of background and ground planes, advice and guidance on buying products, and so on.

I do not need to know about animation techniques as I will be producing single images for a book. However, I do want to understand the basics of the timeline and how animation works, because I do have some other projects that relate to motion, showing movement of figure (such as time lapse of a ballet dancer) in a single image.

If you are interested, please post here with contact information or send me an email at rnollman AT yahoo.com and we can arrange to talk directly via email or phone.

Lightroom with DAZ3d

I collected lots of stuff from the DAZ website. But inside DAZ in spite of lots of effort and reading I was having trouble organizing it. That is being able to know what all I had and all the ways it could be cross referenced and sorted and keyworded and color coded. Made lots of progress on creating my own directory structures under content directories and also crashed DAZ several times and had to restart from download ap and reinstall, now download all the purchased stuff and unzip and install it. But finally got that all sorted out (the secret seems to not be drag and drop but copy and paste) But still there was the problem of knowing what I had and figuring out how best to organize my own folders and how to consider this a "creator" and that a "shader" and find all the nice shaders that would do 3 Delight etc.

Then I had a problem with my small but super fast solid state system drive filing up and had to move all my directories to another high speed external disk. Star cuiser crash crash crash crash... Many new word were invented and I became very familiar with all the ways you can mess up a DAZ install until I finally got everyone to agree that they knew where the directories were, where the new cache work directories were, and installer could find its files and was also off the system drive. Did not want to do that another five or six times. Deleting orphaned references stacked three deep is amusing for only a short time.

Then I had a flash. Lightroom I have used for ages is a supreme program for doing this with images. I could screen capture stuff. Then I discovered the DAZ product website is extremely nice about letting you right click and download high res images from all the product web pages. Lots of stuff often stashed and notated in the images by the developers and often worked hard on showing off what it would do, little notes on this and that, all very helpful.

Now the bad news. I had to start on page one of my product library and bring them up and screen capture the product image and descriptions area and then click on it and go to the product website page and right click and download image to download folder. But Many cups of coffee later the deed was done. Not much worse than the previous attempts and capturing text listings and reformatting them and importing in CVS into Excel etc. and even getting all UNIX on the text files etc.

Now the good news. I can make folders like crazy, keyword an insane amount even nested keywords and color coding and stars. I can start finding every pair of shoes for Genesis 2 and all of the stuff that should be together for a given type of jeans and the several add ons for them. All the POSES!! and what models they work for. After working with keywording and organizing this way and figuring out how to best get it to work for me I have been able to make content directories that make sense to me and have had a big improvement in my DAZ work. All that working also let me understand exactly how certain products relate to each other and the images provided by the developers often contained insights into best suggested ways to use the product etc. After all they were trying to sell them to us.

May not work for anyone else but I found the effort involved has paid back where it counts. When I want to make a new scene or build a new room or swap out a bed or finally get all my poses intelligently organized! and get all the various materials sorted so I do not keep mixing up various shader types as I move things from one package to another. Often there are multiple materials for different shader types and multiple versions of pose files for different generations, often looking identical! You fortunately can often figure this out by hovering the mouse over it and examining the directory structure to see if this is the genesis version or the genesis 2 version. And split those out into subdirectories in some intelligent way.

For me the key was doing all the attempts at organizing in LightRoom until I wrapped my head around how to best make a master directory of content labeled the way that made sense to me. Without doing it inside DAZ where one slip fo the finger could crash DAZ and send you back to square one.

I asked an art history professor once how does one manage to learn all the names and dates etc. And he simply said "you have to work with the data".

This exercise now is easy to maintain. When I have a failure of control and buy something new I just do the image captures for the few new things and add them to the right folders in light room with the right initial keywords. When I decide I finally need to sort out all my general purpose shaders I can work out how to do that best in Lightroom and then dump some images to a folder to use as notes and then carefully build some new content directory structure just for organized shaders all of type 3 Delight or whatever.

Then I started putting all my non total junk renders minus the icons into the same Lightroom Gallery. Then I started making screen captures to not what render settings were working for me and what the list of morph settings I had used to make a modified Genesis 2 female I liked that seemed to still be able to wear clothes! And screen captures of my various DAZ order confirmations. Anything that is in an image format Lightroom was build to organize in multiple dimensions. Even a folder of screen captures of the components of each bundle which has proven very useful during the aniversary season.

And especially handy for anyone who gets involved with something like West Park and all its great manifestations and its friends. It has proven very useful with "creators" packages designed to quickly make things since I keep finding props I really like, such as a particular folding chair and a gas cylinder etc and want to make a folder of neat stuff I love to use from all over the product directory. But you need to first start finding out all the places shoes for Genesis 2 are hiding or some such. Or everything you consider to be Goth clothes.

Just one way to work through the problem of "What have I really purchased? What can I do with it? Where is this hidding? How should I catalog all this so I can find it?!

Worked for me. The nice thing is the more you work with your Lightroom directory the more you find out about what you have in your copy of DAZ and what you can do with it and how they all relate to each other and how you can find more and more stuff quickly. Like every pose hiding anywhere that works for Victoria 4 etc. And exactly which dreses are supported for which figures. And how to dissect out the tricky stuff like ones that have versions for both V4 and for Genesis 2 female all tossed in the same directory with identical looking icons. Or identical looking shaders for different shader systems (they are putting icons on lots of them now so you can tell them apart better - excellent idea!)

No one apparently had any ideas for my last set of questions, so let's try some new ones. ;)

- How would one go about taking a mesh that uses tiling textures and giving it 'normal' UV maps? I looked at one of Faveral's buildings in UV mapper (free) and it doesn't look like something that can just be rearranged. I haven't really tried anything yet because I'm sure this would require a very specific workflow and wanted to hear some advice first.

- Is there a way to stop Iray's Interactive renderer from completely washing out all AO? I tried adjusting every setting I can find, and it always seems to look like a strong ambient light with no shadows or AO is applied to everything (like an Uberenvironment set to Ambient No Ray Tracing).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok, I am using DimensionTheory's iray light presets on a scene. And I can't help but notice the lack of shadows. There are no shadows around the feet, no real shadows around where the clothing and skin meet. Or the biggest yet, if the character is wearing a necklace, there isn't any shading going on around it. I am using a backdrop and I can just see a figure shadow on it but it's very faint...not that I'm looking for a strong shadows there. The render is almost like I rendered the backdrop separately from the figure and then pasted them together in PS and forgot about adding some shadows.

How do I go about fixing that? What would I need to look for in Studio? Add to the scene? Thanks in advance :)

I'm sorry if this is not the place to post this but I'm not realy sure where to post it.

I'm looking for help finding some freebies. I am making a short video for a friend. It has an old New Orleans feel.

I need a small house similar to those in Princess and the Frog. Also any buildings simlar to those on Bourbon Street. I attached some pics from the movie. I've looked around and found a few that might work if I can't find anything else, but I thought someone that was more expreinced at Daz might be able to point me to some things I may have overlooked. Also any interiors/furniture/props that would fit the same theme and time period of early 20th century. I found some good clothing so I don't really need anything there... though I might need soemthing for children, I'm not sure yet.

I don't have any money for this. So I prefer freebies but if there's anything that's a few bucks that anyone knows would fit this theme that would be alright too.

Thanks and sorry again if I'm not supposed to post this here. But I don't know where else to post it.

How is this achieved: Lighting in Promo Images?

I'm sure some of us have felt this way at some point... Sometimes I manage to go for short periods of time deluding myself that my skills in Daz aren't too bad and that I can produce half-decent images when I really try and I'm relatively content. Then every so often I compare my images to some of those that appear in promos in the store and I realise just how rubbish I still am at this hobby and it makes me feel like throwing in the towel. It seems like no matter how much effort I put in or how many hours of trial and error I go through I just can't get close to the kind of art I set out to emulate with Daz . I know that a lot of these artists have been honing their skills for years and I've only been at it for just over 1 year but I was hoping I would've made more progress by now. I can't help feeling like the lack of tutorials, or manuals, or even (heaven forbid!) courses is somewhat the problem. Its almost as if Daz jealously guards their secrets for how to make great art whilst simultaneously trying to convince us that we can do it too.

Take the new promo images for Olympia 7, for instance (http://www.daz3d.com/olympia-7). Would some kind soul be able to explain to me please just how they've achieved that lighting in Iray within a geometrically closed set (http://www.daz3d.com/dm-s-thermae)? The whole room is well lit and so is the figure and I know from bitter experience that matching those 2 things up is incredibly difficult.

I mean, would it kill the people at Daz to produce a short video or something to show how these things were done occasionally? They're trying to sell us a product here after all, not designing a Formula 1 car that needs to be kept secret from the other teams.

Rant over. I'm going off to cry now .

I have just tried to look at daz after a year of being away. Now there is a Genesis 3....More and more people to buy for morphs. The club seems to cost more and I never got all the $2 stuff I wanted. I was over-sold I suppose. I spent a lot of money before I knew it. I am going to play with my old stuff and get it installed. I am just going to have learn to build more instead of buy more. I would love some morph packs. I would love some skin textures to tinker with. But I am sick with how often they roll out characters. Environments are safe, maybe, everything else will be outdated before I can use it. Anyway, I am choosing to bead and color mandalas etc and have other hobbies because this just costs me so very much in time and money. I will just be playing with what I have for a bit if I play when I get it all installed. Just wanted to say something about where I am at and why I am not spend, spend, spending anymore. Perhaps I just need time to enjoy what I have already. I love beads, making makeup, things where you have raw materials and you turn them into something. The idea of one model that could be a 1000 dolls just blew me away. But now the morph packs don't make me feel like I can turn it into much without spend spend spending. Maybe if I win the lotto, yeah, that's the ticket....

When I try to use the Ultra Templates I get an error that it cannot find the projection template, morphs, uv.... dsf files. I looked into the files myself (being the nosy person I am) and noticed that the duf files under /data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 3/Female/Projection Templates... had a "%5C" inside the path. That is a URL encoding for a "\" used in a Windows path and doesn't translate correctly for us MacOS folks. Looking further at the dsf files in /data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 3/Female/Tools/Projection Templates... looked to include them, too.

Until Sickleyield and/or DAZ folks get it worked out and provide an update below is a set of commands that will run through them all and correct them. I had to separate them because rolling them into a single command was more effort than I wanted to put into it. No warrenty, use at your own risk... yada, yada... but they're pretty safe. These will find all files that match path and/or name then execute for each of them a sed command to find %5C and replace with a /. The alternative is to go to all 41 files and do a find and replace on them all individually.

Open a command prompt and change directory to your library's /data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 3/Female/ directory. Copy and paste the below 2 commands.

DSF files under Tools/Projection Templates

find . -type f -name "*dsf" -path "*SY*[(Ultra)|(Sarong)]*" -exec sed -i '' 's/%5C/\//g' {} +

DUF files under Projection Templates

find . -type f -name "SY*duf" -exec sed -i '' 's/%5C/\//g' {} +

It worked great for me and now I get to enjoy this package like other folks. I hope this helps.

If somebody has got it could you please post a few renders, especially one in 3Dl? Even at 75% off the price is still $7.24 plus the cost of a new release, so I'd like to be sure it is a really nice set before I get it.

Since I don't use DAZ I usually convert things that are DAZ only with a poser companion file.

But for some reason I can't seem to create companion files for materials? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

The files load but they have no bump maps and I can't apply different textures. I click on them with the figure loaded, it says it's loading but then nothing happens.

Is there something I'm missing here?

A similar thing also happened trying to convert a v4 skin to g2 and then exporting it, it loads without bump maps or not at all....

I'd appreciate some help.

Forgive the intrusion. I'm fairly new to 3D art - only a few years - and there's something that's nagging me. Something that I'm sure any vet or old-head knows. The question is mostly outdated with the new folder struction, for Daz anyway, but here it goes:

When and Why did material settings and textures start getting added to the "Pose" section of the (Poser) Runtime library. I've picked up a fair amount of older stuff on sale and freebee and have (only?) hundreds of folder, but I'll be darned if I can find many actual 'poses'. Most of them are material settings. There is (now?) a Materials section, but it's mostly empty.

Thanks to anyone who's memory spans back far enough to remember and is willing to admit it. (I'm old enough, but wasn't involved back then. )
