So what the hell is going on here?

I re-imported my metadata from my content library, and the overwhelming majority of my content is displaying (in Smart Content) grey-scale icons, with that DAZ Connect icon in the upper-left corner. I double-click the icon in Smart Content, and..., absolutely nothing happens. Unlike 4.8, I do not see the content for that object/content. In other words, as far as DS 4.9 is concerned, it does not exist.

Somebody better explain this to me.

And you'd better have a better response than 'merged with <some other thread>, with not even a vestige of the original post for me to go back to (which has already happened once, and I did not appreciate it; my original question is GONE, with only an email to let me know that you had redirected it somewhere else, and deleted the original post).

Have I just made a dreadful mistake by upgrading to 4.9? It is certainly starting to look that way....

Tested some optitex Dynamic freebies and found problems with installation - they recommend to unpack files in Content folder of DAZ Studio - as I understood, it is not that Content folder within Program Files - DAZ studio main folder. So I tried to unzip these archives to Content folder, which is placed inside My DAZ Library folder (my main store of all content). But I cannot load them in DS, get the message about texture and other files missing, and invisible items with no visible geometry (although textures are present in the surfaces and opacity = 100). I noticed that the inner Content Folder ( My DAZ Library \ Content) duplicates the contents of My DAZ Library and contains the same People\Victoria4, Support, Runtime \Textures etc folders. So I transferred all files and folders of dynamic clothing to appropriate My DAZ Library folders (level up) and tried again, but no success yet, I get the same bug. Where should I unzip these freebies to get them loaded?

I bought this beard yesterday under the impression that it would work in DAZ Studio (it states so on the product page) but I am now suspecting this is an error. When loaded into DS it is just loads as an invisible item. It loads and renders in Poser, and I am now pretty sure it is Poser dynamic hair, and so will not work in DS. Which is a shame, as it does look good. I do have Poser, but rarely use it, so I am wondering if it is worth keeping just for Poser. If I could at least export the hair as an obj, them it would have some value, but I am pretty sure you can not do that with Poser dynamic hair.

I assume DAZ needs to update the page for this item, to state that it is Poser only.

I've gotten some G3* stuff recently, but I've just archived it because, in my my mind, they're alien to the nice path of v4-gen-Gen2.

I've started thinking, though.. THAT'S DUMB.

Correct me if I'm wrong...isn't the process of fitting G3F clothes on G2F more or less the same as Gen ->G2F? (I followed instructions here some time ago to make an autofit clone)..

So, there would be no reason to NOT use G3F clothes with G2F if I like, right?

WHAT OTHER G3* items would work fine? Characters and poses and expressions would be out, I assume because of the different bones and uvs and all...

In another thread, this card was suggested: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 Super Clocked ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 128 Bit Graphic Card (04G-P4-3962-KR)

I understand that this goes over your $150 super, total, never going over max but I thought I would leave this here in case someone came across it in the near future.

For roughly $50 more you can get nearly double the number of cuda cores and a little bump in clock and memory rate. The 960's with 4GB are pretty reasonable in price and get you on a newer architecture of the nvidia chipset. So for those of you that come across this and are willing to spend $200, this card here is a pretty good option (in a non-Daz official position):

http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00VX1MJQ8

Okay... after talking to my wife and a friend, they both think I should just bite the bullet and spend $250 total (this includes $45 for an upgraded, 600W power supply and adapters for my KVM switch). I can afford it, so I should just do it.

That being said (and apologies to the many others who said I should just invest in a big upgrade, rather than a small), if the absolute max budget is $210 (for the card itself, + another $40-$50 for the power supply), what video card would you buy? The card listed above is tempting, but is there something else I should look at that has 4 GB of memory (I'm not interested in 2 GB cards at all)?

I'm a 3DL render person at the moment, so I've been avoiding all the iray shaders. However recently I've heard talk of people being able to use iray shaders in 3DL under certain circumstances, even if they don't look exactly the same, so out of curiosity I thought I'd ask people which iray shaders they have used, and would use again, successfully in 3DL in case there are extra purchase opportunities to be had for exciting new misuses of shaders I would otherwise not be paying attention to. I understand this is a bit of a hack and perhaps cannot be relied upon should things change in the future, but might still be interesting or useful info.

Yesterday, my hard drive died and believe me, that's the kindest thing that happened to me in this horror story. I replaced the C: drive. Went well. I had backups of all my computer data so all I needed to do was re-install my apps. No problem until I got to Daz. I figured a fresh new install of Daz 4.9 right from the main Daz site would be a smart thing to do. I clicked on the 'Get Started' button and I got goose bumps from the excitement I was feeling from a potential fresh install. The click sent me to the Install Manager. No other choices. So I clicked on that and it made me sign into my account and then the nightmare began. Before my very eyes, the install manager opened and started downloading stuff. Not only the main program but all my content too. All the tabs were busy downloading stuff. There were content queues on every tab and I sat there numb and started to panic. There was no chance to tell Daz into which folders I wanted the content installed. I was sweating and getting heart palpitations and still the stuff came. I tried to intervene while all this was happening and told the database where I wanted the content installed and it told me I did something bad and I almost passed out. I clicked on the Daz program desktop shortcut while all this was happening and Daz opened and the layout was all dark and I tried to select the Hollywood theme where the interface looks chunky with big letters and lots of white areas like a Fisher-Price toy but the preview was still all dark grays with black lettering and it was impossible to read anything. Frankly, I didn't have a clue what was happening or why. I sat there watching the busy monitor feeling traumatized. I shut off the computer and did a System Restore. I LOVE SYSTEM RESTORE! So I'm ready to try again. Here's the behaviour I'm expecting:

1. Download Daz 4.9

2. Tell it where I want content installed

3. Download Install Manager

4. Install my content

Is this too much to ask? Please let me know how to do this. Maybe I should have downloaded 4.9 from my account but I'm afraid to try anything else until I get some help. TIA for any tips.

I'm trying to get the Fairytale Princess Dress to work in DS 4.9.1.30 but morphs and poses are acting totally strange (haven't tried it in earlier versions of DS so I don't know if it is related to this version).

I'm following the instructions in the tutorial using the Universal Tool but it hardly seems to have any effect at all other than for the hip. Morphs don't work either or they are acting strange.

Example: the Sit Pose 1. I'm applying the included pose to G3 and that looks OK, but then when I dial the morph the dress is totally distorted. Anybody else having these problems?

Anyhow, I'm particularly excited because it seems like we get a variety of shaders (and crochets :D ) for a pretty good price :)

i also know from reading the forums that people have bought Poser-specific items without realizing it--and without owning Poser.

some sort of standout visual tagging on the preview image (or below it) and on the product page might be really helpful to a lot of customers.

just a thought...

Well, SSS tricks ala' Iray don't seem to work.

Placing an ubervolume inside the water... doesn't seem to work, either the refraction works OR ubervolume, but whenever refraction is on it seems to not compute the fog.

This is a little obscure, but hopefully I can explain it well enough. I added a Linear Point light and changed the shape to a Rectangle, 100x100 size. Emitter visibility is off, so it casts a light in the shape of a square but the square itself is not visble. However, if a Spotlight is added to the scene, the invisible square emitter still casts a shadow if hit by the spotlight. Is there any way to prevent this aside from moving the emitter out of the way?

I actually don't want to do that because what I'm trying to do is cast directional shadows from the same direction as a linear point light, and I've put a spotlight right behind the linear light.

Thanks in advance for any help.
