Trying to get a freebie prop to glow in iRay like it shows in the product page

I recently placed a freebie sci-fi computer prop (Portable Computer, by DanGer, over on ShareCG) into a scene and went to render it in Iray, but it came out way dimmer than what is shown in the images on the page it came from. In viewport, it shows a hint of a glow, but when rendered its coming out the same level of ambiance as the rest of the scene. I.e. it shows like its merely being lit by the ambiant light around it, the same as the furniture and walls in the scene are. It is supposed to look like the keyboard and the monitor display are holographically projected, but without the glow, that just doesn't come across in the image.

I converted the shaders in it over to Iray by applying the Iray Uber Base to everything (which prompty killed the slight, seaming-glow that it had) and then I tried setting something manually under Emission for each of the relevant parts. Basically, I set something other than black on the Emission Color, and then over subsequent test renders I started raising the Luminance value up and up, but while the relevant parts of the prop now showed more glow about them, the higher I pushed the Luminance, the less vivid and less sharp the images on the video screen became, as if there was a white fog clouding over the image on the monitor. I had it all the way up to 7000 Luminance before I put the project aside.

Evidently I must be doing this wrong.

Three material preset questions.

I'm creating a one click skin shader and I had 3 questions at this particular moment.

1: How do I save the material so it applies as a LIE layer for make-up or other textures?

2: How do I get the base map to apply to other surface settings? For instance, when using the N.G.S. Anagenessis 2 shader It takes the current base map being use and just places it where you would normally have S, SSS, or bump maps.

Basically I want some of the base maps for the character being used to remain.

3: How do you get the torso map to just be placed over the genitalia anatomy add on? On some characters when applying the character material settings you don't have to separately apply the genital material to the genital add-on itself.

This is more for future reference, I personally rarely used the anatomy add-on but some people might need it or want it for whatever reasons.

Bonus question: What are the copyright rules when it comes to using other people's (unmarked) surface and texture maps? I created this shader using all my own maps but there are some great S and SSS maps out there that I would love to use.

I have 4.9 64 bit DAZ Studio Software installed and I noticed that the ERC settings or maybe just the dialog box is different in this version and when i try to run it after creating a slider head morph as I have generally done in the past , I don't get any recognition of the utility being run - Of course if I go back and double click the slider it will move but the head morp doesn't occur. Is their a software error or variable seting I could be missing or does any one know if theirs a tutorial showing these settings for just ERC so I can go back and check my work - -

R-click on your new property and choose “ERC Freeze” is all I have here but it use to be enough - Seems like you just checked the Node 1 property and selected OK in the older version - It's been a while since I created a slider though

I'm new to Daz, but I keep running into this issue whenever I'm rendering a scene.

My GPUs are 1070 GTX & 770 GTX.

The scene I'm trying to rending is slightly over 1gb in size. Well under the VRAM of my smallest card. I can render the entire scene using just the 1070 GTX or just the 770 GTX, but not when I use both. With both cards in use my render reaches 15% before it switches to CPU only and stops using the GPUs.

Does anyone have any ideas what the issue might be?

I've worked through the demo in the documentation and that works just fine. I can see how to merge primitives onto figures.

BUT, what I'm really looking to do is to take a human figure and project it onto a plane or cube. That way, it would be a mould or such.

This is even shown in one of the store sample scenes.

BUT, that's where I'm failing. I've even tried something simple,.projecting a sphere onto a cube but there's no depression in the cube once it finishes. I'm not sure if any settings on the parameter pages would do this or just what.

Any suggestions or atep by step to do this would be appreciated.

So here's a problem:

I've got a scene that I want to render in 2 parts that I will then combine: background and a figure in front of it. There will be several poses for the figure with the same background. So I hide the figure and render the background as a whole pic. Then I render the figure without background and once I tried I realized that I lose shadows that figure is supposed to drop. Right now figure is rendering to png and everything else is jsut transparent so I add it as a layer in photoshop. Is there a way to make the render also catch shadows on that transparent background? Kinda hard to explain, lol.

I want the image that contains the figure to also contain shadows and make those shadows transparent so that I could still slap that image as a layer. Is it possible?

2 attachments: first is a whole render to show how the scene is supposed to look after merging. Second one is background+figure rendered seperately and merged afterwards.

I am certain everyone has gone through a similar trial of trying to get their render times as low as possible, but I am sure I am doing something wrong. I have a decent rig, but my render times are atrocious! I set up the same scenes as are shown in the tutorials and am getting times that are 100s of times longer.

I have an Intel i7-4790 with 8 cores, a gtx 1050 Ti, and a whopping 32 gigs of system RAM. Yet rendering a scene with two characters and two lights will often take a minute or two per iteration. Yes, per iteration, not per frame! I have had my system completely lock up (no mouse movement) for 30-45 seconds while it struggles with rendering. I see a similar scene in a tutorial that hits 200 iterations in a minute and a half, and my system is still on iteration 3. I MUST be doing something critically wrong, mustn't I?

It also chugs just in the normal viewport. With a couple of characters plus hair and clothing I generally am reduced to shaded wireframe mode. even a single figure takes 30-40 seconds to appear in iray, and maneuvering the camera forces a 5-10 second hitch.

I have gone into render settings and set both iray devices (photoreal and interactive) to the 1050 only. The render log shows that it is using the 1050 as device 0 (whatever that means).

Hi al! I don't even know where to begin. The obvious search terms didn't help me, so please allow me to indulge in a lot of stupid questions.

I'm about to get a new PC and I've been wondering if I even need a GPU at all to produce at leat SOME renders. I know that a PC can run without one and do some basic stuff and so far all of my renders were CPU-only. I don't mind waiting a bit longer for the renders because I'm still just learning to light and pose for now, I'm just curious as to how a system without any GPU would do in DAZ. I'd only use it for rendering. I guess I could put my old GTX550Ti into the PC if it really needs at least something just for the software to launch, but for now I'm wondering about a CPU-only PC.

Would a PC with a very high end CPU and absolutely no GPU (or an old one) do better than a system with a mid tier CPU and mid tier GPU? I assume the opposite (cheap CPU + high end GPU) would just bottleneck and couldn't use the GPU to its fullest potential.

My budget can only afford a mid range setup if I go for the CPU+GPU route, so I've been wondering if pushing things to the extremes like this would make any sense? If there are specific benchmarks I should look up for setups like this, what would be a good one that compares to how DAZ3D works? Just regular CPU benchmarks? Or specific builds with specific benchmark softwares?

My main concern is that (if I understand this correctly) low-mid tier GPUs run out of VRAM all the time due to the scenes not fitting into them, so I couldn't do complex stuff with a cheaper GPU anyway. Where as CPU-only renders maybe work differently? I don't know, but I want to get into rendering more complex scenes with tons of objects in them.

I'm sorry about so many questions in one post.

Have a nice day!

I'm baffled as to what settings I've got wrong in my lighting set ups and rendering. I'll attach screenshots in case it helps. My guess is my render settings are causing the problem, more specifically my dome settings. I chose an HDRI image, I believe for the environment map. My render engine is iray.

I just went through the entire Daz user guide plus a bunch of lighting/rendering tutorials on YouTube, but once again, it seems I'm stuck where I always get stuck: attempting to render a full scene with dome, ground, and architecture surrounding my figure. *deep sigh* I also tried searching the forum for answers but I'm clearly using the wrong search terms because nothing came up at all.

Help?

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere in this forum, but since search is such a wildcard..... Here's my issue.

The scene is indoors with no outside light available. I have 3 point and 1 spotlight that provides enough light for the secne, but each of the lights themselves show up as a white(point lights) or black(spotlight) spots with in the render. I want only the light generated to be visisble in the render, not the physical lights too. I know I have had this work previously, but I am stumped on how to fix this issue. If I uncheck Visible in Render, then I gey no light at all, no spot but also no illumination. I could move the spotlight out of the frame to fix that issue, but then need to boost the lumens because of increased distance. That does not work for the Point lights as they are illuminating part of the background wall and cannot be moved.

Screen shot below.

I'm thinking that maybe most of the slowed part of my activity in Daz Studio are there because I'm using an HDD for its library, is it possible?

When I load any scene or subscene, it freezes for 1-2 minutes, it's similar when I save it. The movement of the viewport is very slow, even with a small scene and without Iray. It's really slowed down even when I apply a tattoo.

Between DIM and Daz Studio, I have 175Gb of stuff (150k files, 30k folders), but I have a lot of heavy freebies textures that I'm not using etcetera. When I load something, the HDD usage goes up to around 40%, and it stops when the software becomes usable again.

I already have a nice NVME SSD for the OS, where I installed Daz Studio 4.10, but its content would not fit there.

Do you think it could be a good idea to buy a cheap SATA 240Gb SSD (like a Kingdian) for 35€? I don't care if it fails, as long as it has Amazon warranty and I have a backup. In any case, the freebies I use take less than 6Gb, while I've bought some products, so it wouldn't be hard to restore my datas if the SSD failed!

Anyway, where do you store your Daz libraries? :)

Hello folks,

Quick question. Right now my machine specs are as follows:

Ryzen 1700X @ 3.8Ghz
24GB DDR4 Ram (temporary, will be going to an even 32GB soon)
RX 580 8GB GPU

Now I know Iray uses nVidia so right now I am stuck using CPU. Some renders on G8 go up to 22GB RAM (hence the need to put random memory in there), and it maxes the CPU for up to hours on end.

My question is this... I have a spare GTX 1050 Ti with 4GB VRAM. Will this be a better rendering tool than my CPU? I keep hearing how much better an nVidia GPU is in rendering compared to CPU, so I'm wondering if I should swap it out (I don't do any gaming or anything right now.)

Every time I try Headshop, it ends in a "Daz model not found" error and a fatal crash.

Possibly-relevant information:

Daz is installed in the default C:\Program Files folder.

My Daz library is on a secondary data drive.

The product library page shows a link for DIM installation, but Headshop doesn't appear in my DIM.

I install Headshop via the manual installer, using default settings.

This post recommends loading the figure from DAZConnet and/or saving the model as a scene. I've tried both, but the error persists.

Here's what I do:

Launch Daz.

From Smart Content, load Genesis 2 Base Female.

Edit > Start Headshop.

The Surface and Geometry lists don't appear, so I check View/Change Figure Settings to make them appear.

Surface Selection is correct (Face and Lips), but Geometry to Morph is incorrect (head, lEye, rEye), so I uncheck lEye and rEye.

Click Accept; Headshop launches.

Close the Start Learning dialog.

On the Create New Project dialog, blick the Browse area and select a photo.

The photo loads with keypoints correctly identified, but immediately a dialog appears: "Headshop / Daz model not found".

Click OK on that dialog.

Click Apply on the Create New Project dialog.

The following error dialog appears, titled Microsoft.NET Framework:

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

Value cannot be null.

Parameter name: fileName.

Then there's a lengthy Detials section.

Is there a way to resolve this? I don't usually return products for a refund, but so far this one is frustrating...and I haven't even gotten to use it yet.

I have really been enjoying the PA sale because of all the Genesis items on at great sale prices. Now that I'm using V3Digitimes's Iray converter and the ColorWerks hair shaders, I've found that Genesis looks every bit as good in Iray as later generations. And one nifty thing about Genesis is how it comes with both male and female UVs so you can use skins in ways the creators didn't expect. I'm using the Frankie von Stein skin to create a toon zombie boy.

Anyway, the Frankie von Stein displacement map for skin staples is the only thing that hasn't worked well for me. When used, the shapes of the staples turn out kind of weird. The raised areas don't correspond to where the staples are in the skin. They're close, but the staples look kind of mangled and some of the displacement is oriented wrong or offset from where the staple actually is.

I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. Does displacement work by actually moving vertices, in which case you need to crank up subdivision ridiculously high in order to create new vertices to be displaced?

Also, if I decide something is wrong with the original map and want to make my own, what color should I fill the map with to mean "no displacement" when the Min and Max are set to the same magnitude (e.g. from -1.0 to +1.0). Is RGB 127,127,127 the right value?
