EDIT: The nature of what I'm trying to accomplish has evolved since original posting, so I thought it best to rename the topic to something a little more indicative of what I'm doing.

Short of it: I'm trying to create sprites with normal maps, and have been using the following method to do so up until now:

I've been sticking with 3Delight, largely because I understand lighting better, and renders are a lot quicker. I thought about switching to Iray and investing in a new graphics card, but only if I could reproduce similar output with the renderer. Very brief research and some Youtube tutorials give me the impression that I don't want to use a pitch-black background and a single directional light for the renders, because lowly-lit renders prolong render time. But is there any way in Iray, to just create a "light-only" render of an object, like those Amphibioid X's in the above example? Given that Iray materials seem to have exponentially more fields in the shading pane, I wouldn't know where to begin.

Hello experienced computer folk! May I also probe into that experience a bit?
Since I'm staying safer 24/7 at home, there's time to plan for a new machine. Top priority would be a GPU combination with the most CUDAs possible with my limited income. That may be one of these two: (I don't need VRAM beyond 8GB. I like small scenes).

-Three RTX 2060 Supers [6528 cores for ~$1200].
    < or >
-Two RTX 2080 Supers [6144 cores for ~$1450].

But I want to avoid liquid cooling and I don't know if it would be wise with either option. For example, one article stated that the 2080 Super used 254W (hotter than the non-Super version).
So, do you triple the watt rating with 3 cards? At 163W each (from a gaming article I've now lost), 3 2060S's would be less wattage than 2 2080S's.
So maybe the three lower-watt 2060 Supers would be about as easy to cool(?). The question being, having 3 cards vs 2, what does that add to the calculation?

Another idea is to just get two 2060 Supers now & add an RTX 30XX in the future... Is it a certainty that they'd be compatible, and ditto the MB?

The only experience I have is from building my i5-2500K, GTX1060 6GB, 8 GB RAM system. It runs cool and fast with simple Iray scenes, never going to CPU, but even then, some hair items, etc, add too much time to the otherwise quick scene.

Your observations/opinions in these threads have been very helpful for getting the general perspectives people need. Later I'll study your ideas for a Ryzen CPU & MB for quicker 3DL animating, etc. Thanks!!!

I even tried applying !Iray Uber Base to the walls and floor to convert them to Iray shaders, but it made no visible difference in the render. And it still took 20 minutes.

I got the road cruiser and a pose pack to go with it, but my figure won't do any of the poses when I try to load them. It seems to me that the pose is for the motorcycle (somehow), as it works to pose the motorcycle when I have that selected, but it won't actually do anything with my Genesis 8 figure. All the non-motorcycle poses are working like normal, though. I've tried the motorcycle poses with multiple G8F figures with the same results. File attached for reference.

EDIT: Looks like you have to let the simulation finish. The first 35% of the simulation is fine, but between 35-50% it messes up the hair, so it has to spend the last 50% of the simulation fixing it. I guess Dforce was truly not meant to work for hair. However, if DAZ does manage to make dforce work with hair, I imagine the time it takes to simulate could be cut in half, since the hair looks fairly good in the beginning of the simulation, although not perfect, which requires the last 50% of the time to truly perfect it. If you guys get the problem in my image, just let the simulation finish.

Does anyone know why the left and right side of the hair come together, instead of hanging and aiming towards the ground, after the simulation?

Edit: I've obviously asked this question in the wrong place, shall try elsewhere.

I have a problem with IBL Master. I don't want to use the provided shadow catcher, I want the shadows to fall on the props in my scene. The problem is when I use the shadow catcher shader, it knocks out the diffuse colour, opacity and tiling of the original surface and in the case of the tiling, there is no way to get it back that I can see. A solution would be greatly appreciated as I'm over the month for returning the product and with no tiling it will sit, unwanted and unloved, in my library.

Cheers

I purchased mesh grabber, and I love it. That said, I saw there was a recent update to the tool. I downloaded and installed it.

It now no longer shows as a tool option for me?! I have tried: uninstalling and reinstalling it from a fresh download, and also uninstalled and reinstalling Daz itself from a fresh download.

Nothing works. Am I missing something obvious? It was always under the tool menu for me, I'm lost.

How to change UV/Surfaces/Textures on an item? [SOLVED]

Hello all,

i'm new to some of the nuts/bolts of Daz and 3D modeling in general, so please forgive me if I use the wrong terminology.

What i'm trying to do is take an existing piece of clothing I bought on the Daz store, which has limited choices for textures and surface selections, and make modifications which would allow me to have more surface choices and use some shaders i've bought on those new surface choices.

Using a more simple example of a sphere that has a UV map with a top and bottom section, a surface called 'ball' and has one texture file. What i'd like to do is change it so the ball would instead have equal slices vertically around it, and so that each slice could have it's own new texture applied to it.

So here's where the *assumptions* come in. I started down a path first assuming I needed a new UV map to do this. I used GoZ and pulled the clothing into ZBrush and following various tutorials and youtube vids managed to polygroup the clothing into the new areas and make a new UV map. That map exported back into Daz and I see it on the surfaces UV Map drop down. I verified my UV map imported correctly by changing from Perspecive View to UV Map view as well.

But for some reason I just expected that the import would take each UV 'island' and make a default surface name for it, like 'default1', 'default2', etc. and i'd only need to go somewhere and change that name to something more meaningful. And I also assumed that if I changed the UV on the surface tab back to the original then the original surface names would come back.

So...

1 - Where's the relationship between the figure and the UV and the named surfaces? Can you even change the surfaces in Daz or do I have to use some other tool or do something else in Zbrush when making the UV? Again, I assumed my polygroups to UV in ZBrush would translate to a one to one surface choice after coming back to Daz.

2 - I think I need to save the clothing as a new figure/product and make the new changes there? Assuming again here you can't have one figure with two UVs, and each UV with seperate surface choices...

Finally, I understand that *technically* I could just go use some paint tool and make a new texture with the existing UVs and surfaces - but i'm not trying to learn how to do that. I want something where I can load the figure and using Daz's shaders select which textures to use real time and change them as needed at will.

thanks for any insight and assistance!
