I suppose we will have to wait until that whole NFT scheme implodes. Common sense seems and "business opportunities" seem to be incompatible.

TLDR: NFT sales have fallen dramatically over the last four weeks, a near 90% collapse in sales, and about $9.2 million worth of NFTs were sold in the past week which is nearly half of the entire market. NFTs that seems to be piviting from "Art orientated" towards sports memorabilia (who would have thought?).

If you, like me, were wondering why you saw so many pushing NFTs on TV this week, now you know. I hope this is true, but as crypto's are notoriously volitaile, we may have to wait a bit longer to see if this will last. It does look promising though.

How do NFTs work
An NFT is a unit stored on a blockchain which represents a unique digital asset, but unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, NFTs are not mutually interchangeable, because they are unique.

What does it all mean
If you’re an artist, there is a new way for you to get your art into the (digital) world and potentially make money. If you are a buyer, NFTs are another way to support artists, start a collection, and participate in a rapidly growing market

The 3D Models were created by all-digital modeling agency The Diigitals, longtime champions of driving awareness and promoting diversity in digital art and fashion. In the NFT, J-Yung wears an outfit designed by LEE EUN JIN(@Jin3d_226), a Korean 3d apparel designer, accompanied by music played by Braeden Duperron, a 14 year-old violinist of Japanese, Hawaiian, and Filipino heritage.

Preston Woo, Chief Strategy Officer of Daz 3D and Tafi and visionary behind the NFT’s creation, expresses a deep and personal connection to the project. “I’m proud of Daz 3D and our collaboration with The Diigitals in support of this important and relevant movement. It is more important than ever that we stand together against hate and discrimintion of any kind, particularly in the face of a rising trend of violence directed towards those of AAPI heritage.”

J-Yung’s creator, Cameron James-Wilson said, “bringing together art and technology to benefit such an amazing initiative and stand against anti-Asian hate was an easy decision for us at the Diigitals. As an artist who is heavily inspired by Korean culture, I cannot be silent on the rising issue of anti-Asian hate across the world.”

The animation was created by Juan Mendiola, a Canadian Filipino, who immigrated to Canada in 1989. He was inspired by J-Yung and Shudu’s NFT, reminiscing of times as a child when everyone saw each other as equals. He believes, “we need to get back to those childlike times and see everyone as one and the same — human.”

“A natural reaction in the Asian-American community has been to hide our Asian identities and cultures for fear of being targeted for verbal or physical attacks,” 3d apparel designer, LEE EUN JIN(@Jin3d_226), said in response to her work with this NFT. “Turning to digital art and digital fashion has allowed me to express myself while keeping true to my Asian identity. I am honored to use my skills in support of AAPI month.”

When asked why he contributed to this NFT by playing the violin for the soundtrack, Braeden Duperron said, “I was so excited to play the violin for a project that would help other people like me with all the money going to Stop AAPI Hate. I hope this inspires people to treat others better.” Despite the setback of experiencing discirmination firsthand, Braeden remains hopeful. “I don’t let it bother me and keep doing what I love — playing the violin.”

The popularity of cryptocurrencies has spiked as more blockchain uses have become available, and NFTs are an exciting new way for digital artists to monetize their content. So let’s take a look at what an NFT is, how it works, and what this means beyond the world of cryptocurrency.

What Does NFT Mean?

NFT is an acronym for Non-fungible Token. First of all, what does it mean to be non-fungible? 

Most cryptocurrencies are fungible, meaning you can exchange one with another identical one with the same value. It’s very similar to physical currency systems. A one-dollar bill in the United States has the same value as every other one-dollar bill. 

Being non-fungible means that each piece is unique and has its own value, meaning that no two NFTs are the same and you can’t trade it for another of the same. Think of it like sports trading cards or Pokemon cards. An NFT might be one-of-a-kind, or it might be like a trading card where a limited number were produced. However, NFTs are still linked to the blockchain, just like other cryptocurrencies, so there is a record of the purchase.

What Is An NFT?

Now that we understand what non-fungible means, let’s talk about the token part. A Non-fungible Token points to a unique piece of digital content, and when you buy one, the NFT acts as a certificate of authenticity for that content. This includes videos, GIFs, tweets, art, photographs, video games, virtual real estate, and more. Some popular pieces of content that have become NFTs are the Nyan Cat GIF that sold for about $590,000, a photo from Muhammad Ali’s “Fight of the Century”, and Jack Dorsey’s (the CEO of Twitter’s) first tweet with bids as high as $2.5 million.

But people copy art online all the time, and someone can post the Nyan Cat GIF without buying the NFT, so what’s the point? It gets a bit tricky here, but the difference is that while the artist may keep copyright and reproduction rights, you have a token that certifies your purchase of the NFT. For example, you can get your hands on a copy of Picasso’s “The Old Guitarist,” but having a token for it has a much higher value than the copy.

What Do NFTs Mean To The Art World?

If you’re an artist, this is a new way for you to get your art out into the (digital) world and potentially make a profit — but we’ll have more on that later. If you’re a buyer, an NFT is another way to support the artists you like or start a new collection. Some popular NFTs have sold for a shocking amount of money, but there’s limited research on everyday artists and how much you can expect to spend.
