Hi, I'm somewhat frustrated. Working on a big project (with deadly deadline) in which I place and render my Poser figures in Carrara scenes. All works well -- except that when applying poses form the Runtime library, the figure will "jump" to another position in the Carrara space.

The poses themselves are applied nicely, but it's a big time waster to have to re-position a figure after every pose.

Can anyone help please?

I know how to do this with PFE in DS and with morph targets in Poser...but I am not finding it here in Carrara. Of course, I made all the adjustments in Carrara ;-)

Can someone point me in the right direction? I saw something about morph targets in the model room part of the doco, but for me the model room is like a very dark closet with monsters, so I want to make sure that is it, before I travel into it.

Come up with a 'vinyl' style album cover image for the band of your choice (real or imagined)

(Yes, I was around when that's all there was. Except maybe 8-track but we won't go there, or OMG reel-to-reel...)

Wikipedia: Album covers are one of the various ways in which first impressions affect an audience's perception of a given musician or band. Album covers' design cover may also add to how an audience forms an opinion of them and their music.

Here's the catch...(Rules):
-The full image is a single (square) render done in Carrara (or Carrara plugin renderer).
-Any text must be done using Carrara's text primitive.
-The image itself is limited only by your imagination... and of course the DAZ forum TOS.
-Artists can enter up to 4 works.
-Post work is fine but also post the unmodified render in the WIP thread.

Optional:
-If you are really motivated do the back cover also as a separate image
-If you are really really motivated do a double album (3 images) cover, gate fold (double width), and back cover

DAZ sponsorship!
$195 prize divided into four parts ($50, $50, $50, $45) based on total participation, best render, and the two runners up in these categories.

This is more a creativity challenge than a technical one so have fun with it.

Dates:
WIP thread open now (here)

Entry thread NOW OPEN here; https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/489396/carrara-challenge-57-album-cover-entry-thread
Entry thread closed and voting begins Friday April 30th
Voting ends Saturday May 8th

P.S. feel free to post any issues you have with the challenge in this thread, this is my first host, so, newb...

Addendum:

-It is ok to convert your text primitives to vertex objects for further manipulation.

Come on in Folks... please wipe your feet at the door. :)

Why would I want to create an animation you might ask??... well I've got quite a few objects I've modeled and just hate to let them sit around collecting dust... still images are good but I like to them objects move... or have the camera move... or both. Nothing is as much fun as breathing life into your models and/or content.

Animation is much easier than you or I think it is. The first time I made a simple animation in Carrara it was without reading anything... only playing with some of the gadget/tool settings. Admittedly I had made a few anims in Imagine 3D but that was long before Carrara and the interface was entirely different.

Please note that when I use Anim(s) I'm talking about Animations.

"Below are a few questions/answers I made up, in my tiny little mind, that anyone might have first." If you have more... just ask or send me a PM.

q: What is the first thing I need to know?
a: Well of course you must know how to use Carrara... ohh... goofy me, you probably mean about animation??... you do need to know what keyframes are... they tell Carrara any changes you've made to a scene at different points in time.

q: Can I post problems and questions of any kind here... as well as my own and others animations, renders and screengrabs?
a: Of course! Feel free to jump in anytime. That is the main reason for this tread. Anims must be located elsewhere like YouTube where they can be linked to.

q: How hard is it to animate in Carrara?
a: It is very easy to get started and create simple or even more complex animations. The more complex you want to make one the more you might need to learn. See next post for some Pay tutorials at reasonable prices and also check out some of the YouTube videos and Forum links. I'll also be posting some basic mini tutorials to get you jump started. Don't worry... I'm no animation wizard like PhilW, 3DAGE, mmoir, Dartanbeck, Wendy and many others.

q: Can add actual video I take along with a Carrara Animation?
a: Yes of course. I've seen it done but haven't tried yet. You can also incorporate more than 1 animation together... perhaps as a background, tv/monitor, moving pictures anims in frames/etc.. etc. It has been pointed out to me that a compressed .AVI will likely not work, use an .avi that is Un-Compressed instead.

q: Will other programs like Blender or DAZ Studio be discussed?
a: I don't expect so since this thread is for learning and helping to animate in Carrara. Anims done in both can be linked to of course.

q: Will you be answering my questions?
a: This depends on the question. I admit that I don't have answers to everything. Right now I can only answer simple ones but hope to learn more of the features to animate better and easier.

Come Learn With Me! Let's enjoy this ride... perhaps when it's over we will all be cranking out anims in no time at all.

"I will be adding more questions above... if anyone has a simple one liner or more... please share it with me"

The early 20th century was referred to as the 'Silent Era of the Motion Picture Industry'. 'Oscar for Best Title Writing' was awarded by the Academy at the end of this era. The award was given only once, in the year 1928. Before the advent of "talkies", dialogue was dependent on the titles that appeared between scenes. Their importance was acknowledged at the first Academy Awards, which incorporated a separate category for 'Best Title Writing'. With the next award ceremony, sound started dominating the industry and the award for 'Best Title Writing' was eliminated.

Dystopian Science Fiction

I am offering a $10 Daz3D gift card for a first place and a second place Carrara rendered image (or Carrara plug in renderer). Why? Because "Tuesday is Soylent Green Day." You don't have to incorporate Soylent Green. You can imagine any dystopia you want, or refer to any other dystopia imagined by anyone else.

Here in Texas, we are saying that the pandemic year 2020 was hell, and 2021 was the year hell froze over. Brrrr. Well, a quick check of a scifi movie chart shows that next year, 2022, is the year that the movie Soylent Green was set in. Have you seen Soylent Green? It is a movie about people.

Requirements - use Carrara in your workflow for an image displaying a dystopian future. Post your image in the designated entry thread when the time comes. You can use scene assets (props, figures, lights, shaders,...) from any source, not just Carrara. Postwork is fine, but please post the un-postworked render in the WIP thread. Speaking of that, at least one work-in-progress post to this discussion thread is required. The render must be new (started and finished during the time of the Lil Side Render Fun). Have fun.

Dates - to be announced, but this WIP thread will be open at least through <del>March 31st.</del> May 1st.

Dystopia defined on the internet
Definition of dystopia
1: an imagined world or society in which people lead wretched, dehumanized, fearful lives
Use in sentence, "There's almost a flavor of science fiction to the scenes Chilson describes, as though he were giving us a glimpse into a 21st-century dystopia of mad egoism and hurtling hulks of metal."
— Adam Goodheart
"Over the course of the movie, the late-60's ideal of togetherness turns into a dystopia of violence, revulsion and finally death."
— John Leland

Weightmapping V4 in Carrara

So this is a thing I'm thinking of doing as a future project, which is to weightmap a V4 and a M4 in Carrara.

However I want to make sure I really understand what weightmapping is. I know that it controls the amount of influence over vertexes that any particular bone movement has. Originally I thought that with the correct weightmapping it could be used to control the way the mesh falls at any particular movement, to correct some of the strange bends that V4 sometimes gets in certain movements. Perhaps the most infamous example is the problem with V4's shoulders and the way they 'crease' when the shoulders are moved down by the side, just as an example, and there have been numerous vendors who have made and sold 'fix' morphs for this problem, like Corvus or Xameva and Meipe over at rendo, for example.

But while weight mapping correctly might help alleviate this problem slightly, I'm thinking that it would take more than just weight-mapping to create a Carrara-specific V4 that has perfect bends. I'm guessing for that I would also need to use Fenric's ERC and add specific movement morphs for each degree of movement of the relevant bones.

But maybe I've got it wrong, and simply properly weightmapping V4/M4 will make them more friendly in Carrara and bend more naturally and correctly. Can anyone more knowledgeable on the subject (which is likely to be everyone :) ) comment so I can be sure I understand?

Also while Genesis and Genesis2 are touted by Daz as having much more natural bends at the joints, it still isn't perfect (as evidenced by the many Daz vendors selling joint fixes), I'm wondering if we can also weightmap and correct triax figures too in Carrara.

In short, any advice is appreciated, since I know little to nothing about the subject :)

Dear Daz

Please refrain from removing anymore Carrara items from the marketplace (aka putting them in the "vault").

I know when there have been removals before, some of us take issue with the foul deed and others (inexplicably) cheer it on. Cararra should be looked at in an entirely different way.

Carrara is a wonderful piece of software with a loyal base. We want to grow that base. While yes, it is true that Carrara can utilise products made for Daz Studio & Poser, it is very nice to have items made specifically FOR Carrara.

When a prospective buyer evaluates a piece of software, he looks at what is available for it, what it does, and so forth. Having a decent sized catalogue can be a deciding factor. Unfortunately, Carrara's catalogue is shrinking!

It is bad enough that we have lost a good many items to the "vault" in February, but I noticed excellent products like Walden Park, Venice, Orange Street, and all of Holyforest's shaders are no longer in the store. Now, I have all of these, but I want them available for new users to be able to enjoy & help us grow.

I do applaud Daz for at least letting people know about items they are taking out of the marketplace and offering them at a price that will allow people to pick them up without too much strain. I strongly urge you to cease shrinking our catalogue and hurting future potential sales.
