What we're all about: DAZ strives to bring 3D art directly to the masses by delivering the highest quality digital 3D content and software at the most affordable prices. With a continuing effort at creating realism and diversity in every figure DAZ makes, and a commitment to providing excellent service and support, DAZ works to inspire 3D fans to "Unleash the Artist Within". DAZ also offers premier 3D software programs such as Bryce 5 (a 3D environment package), Mimic Pro (a 3D lip-sync program), and DAZ Studio (a 3D posing application) all at rock-bottom prices.
HistoryDAZ Productions originated as the Poser-production division of Zygote Media Group, Inc., in Provo, Utah where the content included within Poser 3 and 4 was born. After creating the default content for MetaCreations, Daz developed the "Millennium Woman" Victoria and the "Millennium Man" Michael figures. With a tremendous positive response from the Poser user base, DAZ gained a strong reputation as the premier source for Poser oriented digital content. In December of 2000, DAZ branched off from Zygote, and became a freestanding corporation. In January 2001, DAZ Productions opened its first e-commerce website with 159 products. DAZ has built a business by creating 3D digital content at affordable price points offered to the public via an online store. DAZ also works closely with third party artists and offers an online publishing program through which these artists can make their own creations available to the DAZ customer base.
Timeline of Milestones:The company now sells over 3,000 products to a constantly growing group of customers. DAZ has a variety of software solutions designed to expand the market for digital content, including the increasingly popular DAZ Studio software application. DAZ Studio removes the barrier to entry for newcomers to the 3D industry, as it is offered free of charge. DAZ Studio provides an environment where users may take their favorite 3D assets and easily create art or animation for either recreational or professional endeavors. With a free, easy to use 3D tool, DAZ hopes to reach new industries and individuals that would otherwise be excluded. DAZ continues to focus primarily on creating digital content, and only develops items that help increase the demand for future DAZ digital content. With this in mind, DAZ continually develops new versions of their popular "Millennium" figures, as well as developing relations with the most successful third party content creators.
February 1999
Victoria 1 was released in February of 1999. As a division of Zygote Media, the DAZ team created the Poser 4 Nude Male and Female figures (often referred to as "Dork" and "Posette"). Then they set a new standard for Poser figures, when they unveiled the first Millennium Figure, "Victoria". This figure brought a new dimension to 3D modeling, with a more true-to-life body shape, increased versatility through morph targets, and skin textures created from digital photographs of a live human model. September 1999 The popular male figure, "Michael", was released in September of 1999. Here again, DAZ raised the standard for digital human figures with this first version of the "Millennium Man". April 2001 "Victoria 2" was released in April of 2001, much improved over the original Victoria; this new version had a higher resolution geometric mesh, improved texture maps, and over one hundred additional morph targets. October 2001 In the fourth quarter of 2001, DAZ released "Michael 2", raising the quality of the model to be equal to that of the second generation Victoria figure. February 2002 In the first quarter of 2002, DAZ unveiled its first ever Mystery Model. This female figure, known as "Stephanie", was unique as it was created directly from the existing geometric mesh as that of the male figure, Michael. October 2002 In October 2002, DAZ acquired the rights to the lip-sync application "Mimic". Originally developed by Lip Sync, Inc., Mimic contains a highly complex algorithm that analyses speech audio. This analyzation can then be used to aid in automatically creating the correct facial movements in a 3D character so as to 'mimic' the speech of a real person. DAZ took this application a giant step forward with the release of Mimic 2.0 in . The Pro version of this second version provided an advanced interface that allowed further customization of the automatic lip-sync results. At its core, Mimic 2.0 Pro still relied on the Talkback(TM) voice analysis engine created by Lip-Sync, Inc. to analyze speech and automatically output the precise corresponding mouth, jaw, and lip-position data in three dimensions. In August 2004, DAZ released the latest version of Mimic, Mimic Pro 3.0, with advanced capabilities such as video preview, Flash output, view background images, hair/props saved in the CR2 and much more. December 2002 In the latter part of 2002, DAZ released the third generation Victoria model. Victoria 3 became the most detailed high-resolution figure available commercially, providing the most realistic look in a 3D figure ever for use in Poser. This version of the popular female model brought revolutionary ideas to the Poser industry as well. Making use of Morph Injection technology, V3 (Victoria 3) allowed users to pick and choose which of the over 300 morph targets to load at runtime, making it much easier to customize a character. V3 also came with vastly improved joint parameters and posing capabilities, which is now available for free, much improved over the original Victoria's starting price of $100. The 3.0 version of the Michael figure soon followed in September of 2003 and contained all the same advancements as were introduced with Victoria 3. October 2003 In October 2003, the Platinum Club was launched. The Platinum Club is an exclusive savings club where members can purchase DAZ products at a 30% discount, as well as have access to an ever-increasing library of items priced at only $1.99. Membership in the Platinum Club gives a user special privileges such as a Members-Only online discussion forum where the first look at upcoming products are often posted, a Members-Only online image gallery where a monthly contest is held with winners picked by the members themselves, access to the Platinum Club newsletter where exclusive information on upcoming promotions, contests, and events are first made public. March 2004 In March of 2004, DAZ released Mimic 2.0 Pro For Lightwave. This new version of Mimic Pro brought all the functionality and ease of use found in Mimic 2.0 to the large base of Lightwave users. April 2004 In April of 2004, DAZ started the Public Beta release stage of development for DAZ Studio. After two years of development, DAZ Studio is now in the hands of the community where everyone can take a part in helping DAZ Studio become the best free 3D application available in the world. June 2004 In June 2004, DAZ announced the acquisition of Bryce from Corel. Featuring perhaps the most innovative and distinct user interface of any 3D application, Bryce 5 combines exceptional power with incredible ease of use. Bryce 5 is a fun, feature-packed 3D environmental modeling and animation package. The entire program is designed to allow new users to quickly draw and render stunning landscapes, scenes, and 3D artwork. January 2005 DAZ announced the reduction of price for the Victoria 3.0 base and the Michael 3.0 base from $39.95 to free. This revolutionary idea will enable everyone to have the chance to use the two most popular 3D human figures commercially available in their own digital art work. It was another step taken by DAZ to open the doors of the 3D world to those who would otherwise be unable to get started. |
