Sometimes a product in the marketplace has additional files available under the “resource files” tab.
(Example: http://www.daz3d.com/shop/punked)

Could someone tell me what these extras files are for?

I believe they’re the UV map template for that product, so that you can make your own image maps to texture the clothes if you wish.
