It’s IMPOSSIBLE to do a search on usernames. I can’t even find my own deviant username!! Aarghhh!!!
And if you try to reset your password, then for some STUPID reason they do not ask for your E-MAIL adress!!! What if there are OTHERS with a very like name? I accidentally reset the password for somebody who has a name that is close to what I have.
So, I’ve reach the limit of how much I can tolerate and will not go there, though there’s an account that is mine.
I always not my Usern names and Passwords down and have them in a folder on my Desk in case I need to retrieve them if something goes wrong with my Mac.
Never had any problems searching for Usernames though and once my daughter forgot her password it was dealt with in minutes and DA send us a new one.

I know it’s irritating, especially when you’re trying to just get something done, but NOT asking for an email at that stage is actually fairly solid security. Given that DeviantArt does deal in financial details and transactions for some users, that’s not a bad thing. Otherwise, an outside person can take over the account simply by making a reset request, putting in THEIR email address instead of yours, and suddenly, they’ve got access to whatever financial/credit card information Deviantart keeps on you.
Over the course of many years, I’ve had many gripes about dA- most recent mess was the switch over of formats last year, and the introduction of the st.ash system (a total mess inside the lit community and news posters). During that time, I even ventured out to look for a better alternative.
I didn’t find one. dA, like many websites (including Rendo and Daz) have had their share of growing pains over the years, and have always done their best to try and accommodate a growing number of unique personalities, unique tastes, and unique needs. I wish dA was still dA circa 2009, I seem to have liked that the best. Unfortunately, technology, user base, and needs change. If a website doesn’t evolve with them, they quickly become extinct (IE, MySpace, AOL, Tripod, Geocities)
I can understand the password recovery going by user name rather then email. I haven’t reset mine there in a while, but if memory serves me right they used to send out a message to the email registered to that users name with a reset link for changing the password. This means that, in order to hijack an account, you need to know the users name , then be able to check their registered email for the confirmation mail (knowing their email address, log in, and password for the email). Since the email is not the user name, it makes it at least slightly harder, I’d say.
Like most websites, I keep multiple accounts there- one for socializing, one for if I need to purchase anything, and one just for casual browsing. I’m paranoid- I don’t want any personal information attached to an account where I might p*** someone off with something I say. :D So I too keep them written down in a small notebook on the desk.
The search though- I just hoped over, typed in my user name in the search art box, and it pulled up my work with no problems at all. http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion;=&q=ebahr Are you remembering to not use the title indicaters? (IE, no *, ^, $, ~ etc in front of the name? )
Easiest way to find users on DA is to seach for them on Google. Afterall, its not facebook. And if you do not tag your own images with your username, then you will not show up in the search. Searching for my username brings up all my images plus more as people have used my freebies and tagged their work because of it.
Reading the screen cap you posted, DA will send an email to the account holder. This way if it was someone else who is trying to reset the password and not the account holder, they can notify DA staff about it.
I do not understand how one can forget their Username?
Does no one save it somewhere besides on the PC I have all of mine here beside me in a folder written down with password and the lot.

That doesn’t make sense.
You can’t get anything, even knowing the e-mail address’s of somebody else. Once a request is done, it’ll get sent to the person in question, not you.
Secondly, this is done by a majority of web-sites. They’ll generate a link, send it to the users through e-mail with something like “You or somebody requested a new e-mail. Click on the link, or copy and paste the link into your browser of choice to retrieve a new password”. Sometimes they’ll generate a random alpha-numerical string you’ll get as a temporary password, and you’ll be asked to use it to confirm it’s you and nobody else.

One thing, you can’t hack into somebody’s email. Do you get into’s somebody’s email at Yahoo, Hotmail or local ISP? I don’t think so.
I tried to do a search of parts of my name (‘norse’), and it gave me 33881 results. I refuse to even try to filter through all that stuff….....

some of us are not that organized or good at losing stuff
using the same username and password got me hacked so I always vary them a bit
I have indeed got all my passwords written on paper btw but no idea which one is for which not so commonly visited sites!
will never use my important ones like paypal elsewhere and that is NOT written down, housebreakers stealing my desktop do not need that info handy!
and I regulary change them so get very muddled at times.
I do the same. I have a notebook that has all my usernames and passwords along with all my SN for all my software. I always forget my passwords and I clear out my cache and cookies regularly.

Uhh… yeah. yes you can. Both of my yahoo accounts have been hacked and used to spam the people in my contact list….
If you know what email account you used when you signed on to DA, you can do a search for DA in your email account to get your basic account information….
