Hi,
a question:

What is the difference between screen and surface mode in the hair modeler?
Thanks for help.

    HI :)

Screen = allows you to brush, or shape the guide hairs, based on your screen view, and the point position on the guide hair, which can be adjusted in this mode.
You also have Hair IK, and collision detection in this mode.

Surface = allows you to shape the hair from the Hair Root (which is normally at the surface of the model) hence the name.

    Hope it helps :)
