Garibaldi vs. Look At My Hair - which is better overall/better for an amateur?

Since both Garibaldi Hair System and Look At My Hair are 46% off today as part of the hoopla surrounding the release of DS 4.6.0.18, I’ve pretty much decided to take the plunge and get one or the other of them so I can finally get some accurate hair styles for my historical renders.  My question is (or rather, questions are, though they’re related): 1) For those who have tried both, which one, in your opinions, do you think is better overall? 2) Which one of these is better/easier/lower learning curve for an amateur “hairstylist”?  I don’t know how long this sale will last so I’m planning to get one or the other today, so please let me know your opinions!

From what I’ve seen, both are great and different users have different preferences. There’s a thread on the topic here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewthread/17345/

(For what it’s worth, I use Look At My Hair and enjoy it. I don’t own Garibaldi, but I’ve been impressed with what others have done with it…)

Also for what it’s worth, there is a FREE Look at My Hair player in the store, and TONS of more free hair presets (load figure, load hair made for that figure, maybe change color or something, render) so you can see what it’s kind of like smile

For me, I found LAMH a lot easier, and has a lot more simple user options than GB.  But some folks prefer GB. Don’t forget to look at http://www.furrythings.com/presets/ to see a huge and growing list of free hair presets for LAMH.  Also note that in the store there are now items that come with LAMH presets!!!!  I bet there’s going to be a lot more of that in the future. :D IMO that’s where it’s at!

Hope to see you join the LAMH bandwagon :D

OK, I think I should be a bit more specific here. Which is better for *human* characters (I really don’t work much if at all with animals and ‘toons)? What I specifically want to do is create “Gibson Girl”-type hairstyles such as were prevalent in the 1890’s and 1900’s, classic piled-up hairstyles such as were worn in the Napoleonic/Regency era, and “movie star”/“pinup” hairstyles of the 1940’s and 1950’s (AprilYSH has several good ones of the last genre, of course). The fact is that, having read the above-quoted thread, there seems to be an indication that Garibaldi is better for human characters and LAMH for animal/toon characters. An issue with 3Delight was mentioned for Garibaldi, though that seems to be more of a problem with a particular script than with the base render engine (which is what I use). Also, LAMH is a bit more expensive with today’s sale than Garibaldi. So it’s still up in the air for me.

Will those characters work with the free player, or is the full plugin required?

hair, wings, and antennae made with LAMH:
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/index.php?&ACT=50&fid=4&aid=68019_sFOUzo2b2tx3YsBxtKe0&board_id=1

and not human hair, but i made the fur and mane, and its one of my fav pics i’ve ever made:
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/index.php?&ACT=50&fid=4&aid=61471_yuui1SJI1QyQz585nhvV&thumb=1&board_id=1

also not human hair, but besides the horse hair, tail and mane, the antlers were also made with lamh!
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/index.php?&ACT=50&fid=4&aid=62300_QqDi0xRxMoSXhszC1uPA&board_id=1

And those are all just my work, others have made hair styles too.  But as you can see, LAMH is quite good at hair styling.  It’s also very popular for making fur because its so easy and simple to do (and face it, animals in Daz have long long long been hard to use in pics because they looked like plastic instead of furry! we’re all making up for lost time that’s all) but I love making hair styles with LAMH.

So LAMH is DEFINITELY good at hair not just fur :D as well as making other things besides hair, such as clothing, wings, sphagetti, you name it. smile

And barbult, you can not restyle hair in the player, but you should be able to load all the presets n the player! smile If you want additional styling or creation power, you need the full plugin though.

I’ve still got a Neko set in development waiting on the latest version to be out that will use the free player, too.

I wish I could use LAMH, but for some reason (which I assume is caused by the fact my computer isn’t exactly built for 3d art creating but rather bought for gaming/some photo/music etc and it’s not tailorbuilt either) Lamh keeps crashing Daz when I tried to use the free version, and the few times it didn’t crash I got some strnage result with only part of the hair showing.

But as I said, I assume that is because my computer probably can’t handle Lamh, so perhaps one day I be able to look into that program again smile

I’ve looked at the list of LAMH presets, and there’s one big problem; there’s only one preset (Raven Hair) for Victoria 4 as opposed to a couple of dozen for Genesis. I do virtually all my work in Victoria 4, though, and expect to do so for some time to come. So that’s a thing with me.

If you are using a machine with Intel Graphics, make sure that you have drivers newer than Dec 2012 installed.

The “only part of the hair showing” is probably that the hair counts (set in the Look at mt hair pane) are too low.

Feel free to ask questions, we’re here to help

V4 needs some love, to be sure.  LAMH supports her and all Gen4 figures just fine.  We just need for folks to create a few presets for them.
