The ad for this weekend’s sale features a lovely droid . . . that I don’t recognize.  What product (or combo of products) is that?  Because if I post this on my blogs with “hey, great time to get into 3D”?  Somebody’s gonna wanna know how to make the droid.  shut eye

To me, it doesn’t look exactly like either one.  But the face looks like a Genesis character to me.  Probably a new version of those older sets that hasn’t hit the store yet.

Yeah — looking at those, there’s some similarity to the neck and “ears” of Aikobot2, but the elbow and shoulder joints don’t look like either of them.  Seems like some serious kitbashing went into this.  Did DAZ’s marketing people really put together a promo intended to draw in new-to-3D customers featuring products that in any practical sense aren’t available?  hmmm

I see no issue with kitbashing for the promo.  It showcases what can be done with the product by simply combining it with another or leaving out one part and applying the metallic shaders to the skin instead of a prop.  Its very creative if you ask me and a very smart marketing.

Look at the bot armor the way it’s shown in this pose product - http://www.daz3d.com/v4-bot-armor-poses

I think the promo is a combo of bot armor and either plain genesis or the supersuit, plus different shaders.

If that’s what happened, sure.  I could say “That’s X, Y, Aikobot2, and DzFire’s Real Metals silver shader” — no problem.  Is that what happened?  If so, what are the products?!?  Because none of the joints from shoulder to thumb are from the V4 Bot-Armor or Aikobot2.

Aikobot 2 has those thumb joints plus the lights inside the knuckles: http://www.daz3d.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/a/i/aikobot-2-3.jpg

Ah, thanks!  I didn’t spot that in the promos, and I’m not at home to check (I have Aikobot2, not the V4 Bot-Armor though).  Any ideas on the shoulder’n'elbow anybody?

Bot Armor says this on the promo page:

“Easily load a whole armor/joint prop set, or load individual parts like one hand and forearm for example. Simply hide or delete smart prop joints to change robot parts to armor. You can even combine the robot figure set with helmet and mask as a stand alone figure. The possibilities for this set are only limited by your imagination.”

That upper arm might be from a regular shirt - it’s amazing what you can do by using the same shader across multiple figures.

Both bot armor and Aikobot2 have a lot of styling (grill vents/etc) in the arm and forearm segments that is actual geometry, so not easily hidden.  Whereas this bot figure has very smooth arms.  The hands also look much slimmer than Aikobot2’s, to me.  The geometry of the cowls from both sets don’t lead to easy hiding of items to get the look of the cowl on this bot, either, even with judicious use of the PGE.

Bot Armor led to Aikobot led to Aikobot2.  My guess is that this is the next iteration on the product, probably for Genesis.  If it was exactly the same as a prior product, even with the flexibility that Genesis brings, I don’t think a lot of people would upgrade.  Hence why this looks so similar, and yet isn’t.

If it’s a new, not-yet-released product, that’s annoying but not a huge problem — if I knew for sure then I could say so, at least.  What I’m worried about most is that the shoulder’n'elbow joints are hand-painted transparency’n'displacement maps on a figure over an armature like DzFire’s Cyborgs, created specifically for this promo and therefor never to be available.  That would, IMHO, be deceptive advertising — it would violate the strongly implied “Buy Our Products And YOU Can Make Art Like THIS” (I’ve been doing this for almost eight years, and every time I’ve attempted that I’ve failed miserably).

That face is V5 and the body looks like hers too.

Genesis is head & shoulders above “Genesis 2” (or better known as BF2/BM2) and is the FAR superior figure. Why? It doesn’t suffer from the UN-necessary gender split

There is a placeholder in the documentation center for “Bot Genesis”

http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/15588/start

Could the newsletter be a sneak peek ?
