Nice lighting and the viewpoint is not one that is often used.  Good job.

There is my entry for this month’s contest. It’s a small hommage to my grand-father who fought in the Spanish Civil War 75 years ago. I have tried to show the mix of military and non-military clothes that the photos of the soldiers of this war show. Not very happy with the lights though…

Did you have shadow maps turned on?  That might have made a difference.

I’m not good with history, I didn’t know that war was such a short time ago.  We learn something new every day!  grin

Yes, but it did not work as expected and I did not had time to fiddle more with it…

Sure ya do—it’s only November 27! Get back in there, kid!

That landscape models is one of many that sucks in all the light. I don’t understand these things, but I always get SOME shadow (I’m talking DAZ Studio 3 here) switching to raytraced shadow because Deep Shadow Mat isn’t intense enough. Also Dyald’s and Stonemason’s daylights from ShareCG will hammer out a shadow.

Mind you, your lighting is already pretty good—like the way he’s profiled against the sky.

WAIT A SECOND, I haven’t entered yet! And it’s already November 27!!!

It si true that I used Deep Shadows map, I will try with the raytraced to see if there is any difference.

ZamuelNow: As a reenactor of long standing (25 years) and a volunteer interpreter for the National Park Service (15 years) I can really appreciate your render. Thank you.

vivayo: Your render is a nice tribute to a part of history that is little remembered these days, but had a real and lasting impact on world events at the time and in the future. You are to be commended for giving this part of history it’s due.

Both renders are truly outstanding. At first I though that picking the top render this month would be a bit of a no-brainer, but now I’m not so sure. These two renders have dramatically upped the ante. Glad I’m not a judge…

Nice piece of work! Well thought out, nice composition. Forgive my asking, but…excuse me while I put on my historical hat…I find it a little odd that you chose to include the Baker rifle as opposed to a modern military firearm. I mean, it’s a nice touch, but the Baker rifle is a British military weapon more suited to the early 19th century. It renders up nicely, but it makes me want to sit down are re-watch all my episodes of Sharp. I’ve faced off those guys across the field before. Nasty bunch…never mind…Nice render…

First of all: thank you for the compliment. smile  Secondly, this isn’t the render I wanted to do… I wanted to do the “Kennedy”-esque salute, but someone else beat me to it. Then, I wanted to do a render representing a piece from each of the American conflicts… But couldn’t find a Kentucky long rifle. So… I substituted a Baker hoping that no one would be able to tell the difference. Just pretend that it was a weapon taken from a British soldier during the War of 1812, and used heroically in battle. wink

Interestingly, CBC Radio just aired a two-part radio special on the Spanish Civil War (concentrating on the Canadian volunteers). It’s still available on their website: http://www.cbc.ca/livingoutloud/episode/2012/11/09/the-spanish-crucible-with-interactive-timeline/

So I have just enough knowledge to know how true to life this image is…

You’re welcome, Lord Ganthor.  Outside of some entirely separate headaches I’ve been having with crashes and such, this contest wound up being somewhat difficult since my brain went into full tilt Serious Business mode which caused a bit of an artist’s block.  Figured that in the end, most inaccuracies could be noted as understandable given the resources.

With my entry, I made a bit of an update.  Changed the layout slightly, fixed clipping in a few places, and made small adjustments.  The watch was added to help with the “preparations” concept in that she’s not finished getting ready or perhaps this is a rehearsal.
