Pulling my hair out. (found the answer)

I've noticed that when I render with shadows my render speeds tend to go pretty fast up until it starts rendering the characters hair and then things slow down to a crawl. Is there anything I can do to speed up hair renders?

Found a thread with the answer.

On a semi-related query. I've been finding that when I render an image with facial hair painted on the texture map, the facial hair doesn't show up anywhere near as well as it does in the preview. Any ideas how to improve this other than actually modelling facial hair?

You might want to check the bump and displacement settings and increase them a bit.
