If I'm using Genesis in Poser 9...

My thinking is that I only need to download the Poser Companion Files? Am I correct in this? Poser 9 has slowed to a crawl and if I've got my runtime cluttered with more files than I need, I'd just as soon get to work cleaning it up. I know there are several posts here on the DSON plug-in but the thought to wading back through them are a little terrifying. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

No the Poser companion files are basically the equivalent of the CR2 in a poser product.

You need the DSON files for the companion file to have something to reference.

Thank you...and I like the description of what the files represent as well.
