Font -> OBJ tool?

Any suggestions for a simple/cheap font -> OBJ conversion tool, to make (extruded) 3D objects out of installed (TrueType) fonts on the system? I'm just looking to make OBJs for U, S and A for a belated independence day render idea I've got.

Thanks

Hexagon may be able to do this. Is Daz still giving it away fro free?

Also Sketchup can create text but the free version limits export of mesh as "kmz" for Google Earth or "dae" Collada file.

Daz Studio can read "dae" Collada file and then export it as an obj mesh. However it may not be a clean mesh.

If you're using bryce try "Elephont", also free. Do not know how it sits with other apps.

This is a tip from another user (sorry I could not find the link to this tip in the old forum) to create font objects with Hexagon:

Here's the steps for making text for OBJ export in Hex:
    1) Click the Text 3D icon and set tesselation to 3 and bevel to concave.
    2) Enter text and validate.
    3) Click the Average Weld icon and validate. This makes the text one object from seperate objects.
    4) Click the Triangulate n-gons icon.
    5) Then smooth by hitting PageUp one time (optional).

Wings3D, it is free and super quick to turn true type font into an object (.obj) format.

Anim8or has been able to do this longer than DAZ|Studio's been out in Beta.

Looks good. But there's no info as to whether it's cross-platform. Is it?

    It's only for PC.

And because Hexagon is free I could not see any benefit purchasing this application, you can do the same with Hexagon.

I've owned Font to Mesh Express Converter for awhile, but I can't get it to work on Win 7 x64 :(

Yea, own this.  Doesn't work right.  I wanted to convert Woolbats to obj and when I select that font from the fonts list it keeps defaulting back to what ever the default is.

Woolbats?... Are those the really big moths that eat woolen underwear?

Try Blender. There a very simple font to obj method in there.

  • It's not free (or even cheap) but Photoshop does a fantastic job of tessellating extruded type.  That's the program I use when I need to do things like that (usually for address numbers on houses and things of that nature)

  • While we're at it, if you have one specific set of letters or whatever that you want converted, you could always PM me with a link to the font, what you want it to say, and I could do an extrusion for you and upload to Dropbox.

That link didn't work for me. Maybe they made changes to their website? Anyway, here's the url to the download page that did work for me:

  • Carrara can do this as well. It's not free, but it seems to be always on sale.

trueSpace is free and can do this with ease...I paid and bought for trueSpace from SE all the way upto the final version before micro$oft destroyed it...
