import the .OBJ and you will see a grey shape. Then highlight the surface you want and in the surfaces tab go to "diffuse colour" and select a texture file for that channel

Working from memory, so please bear with me...

    1) Find the Surfaces Tab.
    2) Select the Editor Tab.
    3) Use the Surface Tool to select the part of your object you want to apply a texture to - that part should then get an orange outline around it.
    4) Options will appear for things like Diffuse Color, Specular Color, etc, in the Surfaces Menu. What you want is Diffuse Color.
    5) Click the white square next to the Diffuse Color box.
    6) A pop-up box will appear - the top option, I believe, is something like 'select file'. That's the one you want.
    7) A dialog box will open. Use it to navigate to the file you want.
    8) Click Enter, and the selected image should become the texture on the selected part of the object.

If that doesn't work - if you get to the last step and the texture doesn't appear, but the object changes color - the object hasn't been UV mapped. UV mapping is basically unwrapping the 3d object into a 2d plane, letting a texture be applied from a 2d image. There are various programs that let you UV map, but I'm hoping you won't need that because I don't know much about that.

Best of luck with this! :)

jerriecan's given you the detail. I only gave you the overview (as I wasn't sure how familiar you are with DAZ)

Does your object have materials and is it UV mapped?

Having issues with the surfaces tool.

After building this obj in Hegagon 2.5 (the 2nd one in my experience) I want to add texture to it but when I load the image in its grey, solid state, it opens and responds fine to every edit tool except surfaces.
When I select surfaces, as soon as the mouse hits the desktop area, it crashes.

I have 4 objects "welded" to the frame.
It loads fine as an obj into DAZ via import/export.

    Any ideas?

  • Does it have any surfaces listed in the Editor tab of the Surfaces pane?

Forgive my ignorance but I have no idea where to find an "Editor Tab" or a "Surfaces Pane".
Ive used this program for about 20 hrs.
I have ZERO experience in any type of 3D rendering (other than using Autocad 2D) and maybe 40 hrs with DAZ 3D

    This is my screen...

    BTW:

I've spent 2 hrs, unsuccessfully searching for some type of easy to understand ("texturing for dummies") instructions on texturing and if it exists, it aint easy to find on a Google search.

    UPDATE:
I just figured this part out for what I'm guessing is the answer to your question.

    MY BAD:
    I'm working in Hexagon 2.5
Do I need to open it in DAZ?

    UPDATE:
I opened the obj in DAZ and loaded properly.
I was able to find the modifiers slides and change the color from the grey to a charcole tha better reflects the plastic frame but I have yet to figure out how to seperate the steel grey slide from the black plastic much less the additional imprint details.

  • No, my fault for assuming you meant Daz Studio - which does hae a Surface Selection tool.

    PLUS:
In DAZ I was able to modify the prop a bit but not nearly as much as I want to.
When I saved the file to my "My Weps" directory I got a .duf file and a .duf.png file but I still see no listing nor thumb for the prop in the Props Pane.
Do I need a mtl file and if so, how do I create that?

    UPDATE:
Do I need to create a jpg file first?
If so, how do I create the skinimage?

  • You need to select some faces and assign them to a Shading domain. You may also need to UV map the model, if it isn't.
