Haunted House of Dracula

I am looking for characters, and I hope the is the appropriate forum for this request.

The game is called “Booh and Babbot in The Haunted House of Dracula”. The initial idea was developed from a game developed in Game Maker called Pyramid Panic (I think that is the title)? Since BBHHD is a 3d adventure game, it is quite a leap from Pyramid Panic, but my childhood interest in Abbot and Costello and Laurel and Hardy movies got in the way and “Booh and Babbot in The Haunted House of Dracula” was born. It is a work in progress, preliminary game sets or maps have been developed in Unity, which is my chosen game engine, and I have links at the bottom of this for those who are interested. The sets are empty, though I have a number of items for the PI office, and storage room.

I am looking for characters to populate the game. I have preliminary Booh and Babbot and I have a link to those also, but they have not yet been fully developed. The game is played from the first person perspective of Booh with Babbot there to offer help. Where one is the other is not far behind.

The cast of characters is extensive and I am looking for existing characters that can fill the roles of the cast. Purchasing what has already been developed does reduce my cost, and I am looking for existing creations, and I do not need proprietary or exclusive access except for Booh and Babbot.

I do not need a lot of positions this is not a fighting first person 3d game, it is an adventure mystery with a lot of humor, I hope.

Characters

Femme Fatale very pretty, pale, she will show up often and though out the game there is a question as to whether she is a villain or not. There is a lot of this in all the characters.

Dracula - Is he a villain, good looking type of vampire Not Christian Slater, more older Cary Grant.

Scientist -definitely a Christopher Lloyd type.

Butler - English of course.

House Keeper Older sultry.

Accountant - Book wormy.

Big Game Hunter - stereotypical.

Professor - More Indiana Jones than from Gilligan's Island.

The Lady - Mrs Robinson type.

The lady's maid - PG stereotypical, not a french porn outfit.

The Athlete - all American boy, maybe too much.

Secretary - cheerleader type.

The Clergyman - a man of questionable traditional moral values

A nephew - sniveling.

The chauffeur - a dark haired sneaky eyed chap.

The Attorney – any stereotypical attorney look works.

A half dozen reusable vampires, 3 male 3 female.

Some number of zombies for the grave yard

various monsters for the maze

creatures for the dungeon/laboratory

I am looking for consistency of overall character style and existing characters are desirable, as I said except for the heroes I do not need exclusivity. If you and others already have characters for sale that is mostly what I am looking for. I have DAZ 3d, blender and iClone, and the final characters will end up in a Unity 3d game engine. Along with purchasing the use of the characters, full credit for development will be provided in credits and any advertising I do.

Game synopsis

The game starts in an office building where Booh and Babbot are gentlemen cleaners (janitors in business suits gimic). Cleaning up the reception area, a lawyer's office, a science lab, the store room and a PI Office are the initial tasks. The two must work around the receptionist, a Lawyer and the scientist, who all eventually leave. Booh comes across a cliff notes version of “How to become a PI” and when he follows all the instructions a Femme Fatale arrives looking for a PI. She is beautiful, rich (just inherited a mansion), and she is in trouble and needs help. Our boys are about to promote themselves from being cleaners to being PI's. Oh did I mention the mansion is haunted...

The boy arrive at the mansion and have to find a way in. It leads to being dropped, literally, into a dungeon. They have to get out and into the house, the lady is in distress. Once in the house they discover a collection of alive and not so alive characters. They must solve six murders to get out of the house. That gets them into a haunted labyrinth and while gathering evidence to discover what is going on avoid the denizens of the labyrinth.

Upon escaping the labyrinth our heroes find themselves in a haunted graveyard, talk about going from the frying pan into the fire. Vampires, zombies, and who know what else. Escape the grave yard to come upon Dracula's crypt. The show down occurs here...?

Dracula's Crypt is the only map object not completed. No furniture as of yet, no items of collection, and game details are in development. The characters are my next challenge, if you have some to sell use of I would be interested, including clothing circa 1930's/1940's.

The following are preliminary maps to game play. Arrow keys control movement, the right mouse key and shift key with the mouse control view, right mouse click provides some options including full screen. Doors and some lights controlled by mouse click, open door use “door knob”. You can fall off the edge if you get there, escape releases you from full screen, movement is also controlled by “wasd” keys. Any questions use BBHHOD in email subject line if you want my attention.

Just so you know, DAZ models are not intended for game use, they are for rendering purposes only, yet some are available for use following the purchase of a specific license and following the guidelines set forth for their use.. check out the game usage license before going any further with DAZ models
    http://www.daz3d.com/shop/catalogsearch/result/?q=game+license

best of luck with the game, sounds like a good time.

Rendered DAZ models (i.e. sprites) are ok without the need of the game license.
*if that was your intended purpose, since reading some of your links you do speak of using 2D.

The characters in the game will be in 3d. I assume that developers can provide characters that they have created and can be either translated into unity 3d, I have done this with daz 3d models, or integrated into iClone. I am looking for commercial use, but not exclusive use of characters. I am putting out this request to save time. I know a number of people use Daz and travel in other circles, and I hope to get the word out. I have put this request out in Facebook and Renderosity. If anyone has other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

I use 2d primarily for textures and preliminary graphics.

Then you still need to have the appropriate Indie or Commercial license. The standard EULA does NOT grant those rights to include any DAZ or brokered 3D mesh in your game.

    INDIE LICENSE
    COMMERCIAL LICENSE

    DAZ 3D Game Developer (FAQ)

I know you want to save time, but you need to do it the right way. Just because something can be done, doesn't mean it is allowed. I have imported lots of DAZ assets into various games for personal use and as a point of fact to see if it could be done and used as a reference for when I made my own models.

Let's hope the "word you are trying to get out" is to do it legally and not the other way around.

As mentioned, one approach to legally use Daz content is to use pre-rendered 2D images to create animated characters in a 3D world.

Many years ago a couple of Daz users used prerendered 2D characters (actually, I think it was a mix of 2D and 3D characters, but the Daz characters were definitely all 2D) in a 3D world to create Minions of Mirth, currently billed as the "top cult hit indie MMORPG in the world today.". You'd have to go back to the Daz forum archives to read about how they did it--or you might find some info at their website (www.prairiegames.com). I think they used the Torque game engine, not Unity, but their approach would work in Unity. There was a MMORPG kit for Torque that they sold, along with some character packs and other art. I don't think you can buy the art anymore, but the kit is supposed to be resurrected some time. (http://www.mmoworkshop.com).

More recently there is the interesting approach used to create Zombieville USA. There are lots of articles about how they did it. Here's just the first one I found: Zombieville USA Unity 2D Post Mortem.

Another option (not using Daz) is to use Mixamo to create rig and animate characters, but it seems a lot more expensive. Although since many of your characters probably won't need more than a few gestures, since they'll just be waiting around for the player to find and talk to them, it might not be so bad.

My interest was to purchase 3d characters and models from developers who were already selling them in the stores, like at Renderosity or the DAZ store. Do these developers not have the right to sell the use of the 3d characters or 3d models they have created and cannot the specify how they are available. I am looking to do this legitimately, and I am interested in dealing with artists who are interested in selling their legitimate wares.

I have successfully purchased several 3d models which have been identified as available for commercial use. I assume that as long as I do not violate their licensing, then I am okay? IS this not the case?

You are not buying the products, you are buying a license to use them. That license should tell what you can and cannot do with the product. Most licenses here and at other stores allow the product to be used for 2d images and animations. What they do not allow is the redistribution of the actual mesh and texture files in an extractable file format, which is what you seem to want to do. Do carefully read the info from the links FSMCDesigns provided.

The characters primarily sold here are not 'originals'...they are just morph packs for the base figures. Without the base figures, they are just some textures that won't work on anything else. The dev/game license would allow the use of the base figure, and then any character packs you can have made. And that's the sticking point, Very few of the humanoid/creature models here are complete, individually built, not relying on the 'base' models, and those that are usually are 'toon' type characters...mainly because it takes an insane amount of work to develop a fully rigged, fully detailed human.

Since you are wanting fully customized, as opposed to off the shelf, characters, most of the terms could be hammered out independently from what is typically done for a package sold in the store, once you have a clear path to using the base figures.. The same with prop and set items. The details for those kinds of assets are best worked out independently, anyway.

If you find an original mesh, then yes, that developer can specify it's uses. There are not many original characters in the stores, most rely on a DAZ or Smith Micro mesh for their character to work, which means any use of it outside of it's intended use falls back on the original mesh owners. While there may be vendors that will work with you on producing and licensing specific models, it's not something you really see in this community or marketplaces. Turbosquid is more in line with what you are trying to do and while they may seem expensive, that is closer to the going rate for game specific models and licensing than what DAZ provides.

Also, when a DAZ or brokered mesh says it can be used for commercial use, that means within the confines of intended use, meaning renders and animations, not as part of a game.

So there is no confusion, I am aware there are a lot of characters that are derived from base models. I assume I have to purchase any base model that is used for character development. I am looking for off the shelf characters that can be user with the character set I have described above. Clearly I will have to contact any artist developer I have purchased items from to confirm that I may use their models in a game environment. I DAZ is not the market place for what I am looking for, other than turblsquid, unity, iClone, are there other sites that I should look up and contact.

Thank you all for your responses, I appreciate your help. Being a independent game developer is challenging.

DAZ does have a games developer license, which would allow the use of items listing DAZ 3D as the vendor.

Richard, does that mean as long as someone selling through the DAZ store, provides for commercial use, that if I have an Indie developer license and earn less than $100,000 a year I can use their 3d models in my game?

You can buy a license from daz to use their original figures for this.
Some product creators (like myself) have their own licensees that can be purchased to use our "characters for daz products" to be used in games.
Each PA would have their own separate license as the characters that they create are their own copyright.

No only the itmes that are listed as Daz Originals, Ie DAZ 3D as the prime vendor come under the game license. PA items are not included.

Ah beaten to it, and Rawn said it better.

I really am not trying to beat this to death, but I do want to make sure that what I do and those who I purchase from are on the up and up. For all items in the DAZ store with DAZ as the prime vendor, if I have a DAZ game developer license, than any models I purchase I can use in a commercial game.

For others, PA's, I need to purchase the license for game use from them. Does that require a DAZ game developer license also?

    Thanks

If the PA's product is based on a daz original product, then you will need the daz license as well.
If the pa created an original figure not based on a daz figure, then you only need their license.

    Hi Rawn,

So I was going through your store and I found a character I might want for my graveyard, the product is Roarc which is based on Michael 4. I assume I need to purchase Michael 4, if I purchase Roarc is he a character I can use in my 3d Game? Are there additional costs?

    Good example
You would have to buy Michael 4, The Roarc character, the DAZ game License, and my Rawart Game license to be able to use that character.

But that said...you could also then use any daz original figures, and any of my characters...you do not need to buy a license for each individual character.
