[blink, blink] Maybe that's part of my problem: my downloader claims that it is 429.22. (Sorry for the momentary brain infarction on the size in my other post.)

Persistence, stubbornly persisted at, will eventually let you persevere with large files. In other words, I finally got it downloaded.

Can someone please show me how to get textures to work for these? So far, when I unzip these into content, and use em in Daz, all I get are pieces are slick, shiny, featureless plastic. I am so ready to tear my hair out from all this, since I can not get my comics going if I can't even figure out how to get the sets to work. @_@ Preferable step-by-step, since I am still, for the most part, a noob, on this stuff. ^_^; Thanks for any help.

    Castellan,

This is going to be a tall order to explain so bare with me.

In each item you listed the first and foremost thing you should be aware of, is they were all made with Poser in mind. D|S started as a cheap imitation of it. Now both have vast advantages over the other in various areas. But that's not the purpose here.

    So....

What you need to do first is set up on your screen the 'SURFACE' tab. This baby will set everything right for you, and gold mine of use!

If you click on Tools (top of the screen) then go down to 'SURFACE SELECTION' now click on theat offending shine! The texture you have selected will now be in the Surface Tab.

Diffuse is the primary texture, this needs to be set to 255,255,255 at 100% in the slider below it. In Ptropes TOS bridge set many of the screens around the bridge are set to 0,0,0 at 100%, and render as black screens, just go around the room and fix them...easy. But that is if there is an image beside the #,#,# if not and it's a colour then don't touch it!

Glossiness and Specular color and Specular Strength are what are giving you the shinny problem. Set the slider's to 0% or the color to 0,0,0.

Opacity is easy...it's either there, sort of there or not there...slide the bar and you'll understand.
now scroll all the way to the bottom of the surface tab.

Lighting Model : This tell D|S's renderer how to handle the texture. I like to set objects and such to Matte. Water to Glossy Plastic.

Bump and Displacement maps. I've been doing this art for only 4 years and I'm still having problems with them but getting better...sorry you're on your one there, but keep in mind they made the clothing, metal and all looked WAY THE HECK better!

Note me here or at my Deviant Art account for further help. I'll do what I can.

And not to slam Grinch's bridge set but I'd seriously consider Ptropes bridge set.

    Paul

One last thing...3DS...D|S can't. That all there is to it.

What you "need" is to take a deep breath and then learn about how to alter the surfaces/textures for your needs. A big part of this hobby is altering things that we load into the programs, it takes time and patience. Once you get the surfaces the way you want, you can save it in your library for future use.

For ,3DS files, you will need to use another program to convert them to .obj files to import into DS (and then alter the textures/surfaces again). Poser can do this if you have it, or try blender as it's free.

All I want is the item I load up to look just like in the preview image as seen on page when one downloads said items. Like that Voyager bridge looked all nice with the Okadagrams and everything. Seems like Daz is pretty much a red headed stepchild or something. And I do want to get my comic going as quickly as possible, I promised myself that by 2013, the comic will be up and going. There's these texture folders in some of these files, like the Hornet bridge, but I got to figure out how to make them appear. Hopefully I can get that working with some of the steps offered here.

    Trying....

in the surface tab as I pointed out IF there is a file name in the Diffuse section. click on the name, then click browse. DAZ will take you to the directory where the files are. Rduda often provides two textures for his sets. match the alternate texture if you are looking for another look.

As for trying to look like the adverts and promo images. Most of the sets you will find are geared toward poser and/or have poser based light settings.

Poser's Firefly renderer is better than DAZ's 3delight but Poser lacks the stability I look for in my images. Each system has pros and cons. DAZ from most people I've talked with is easier to learn for someone with zero 3D experience...and then when you go to Poser it's easy to learn also..but from what I've seen a Poser user has problems learning DAZ...just one of those things....Ask ShadowHawkOne...he'll testify on that issue.

So back to the problems at hand, With a bit of fiddleing, you'll note if you take the light percentage down to 25% or so things will work out.

In my case I prefer to start from scratch and use the lights from the 'firey Genesis' set (part of 4.5) .I know you are using DAZ 3 but seriously consider useing DAZ 4.5 I was hesitant but now find it the best, fastes and most stable. 3 is pathetic in my eye's. but if you wish to stick with it for now. no problem, I'll do what I can.

Start simple for your comic. Here is my first one. http://pdsmith.deviantart.com/gallery/35287680#/d3f5xe1 is looks like hell in the beginning but as I went along things got better...in my opinion.

Lights are a task in themselves..I'll write something up to help in a bit.

I'm going to jump in here a second with my 2 cents worth. Before you start the artwork for your comic, make sure you have everything laid out and planned in advance- you'll head off alot of problems that way. This is one reason that each of my Nova Treks takes so long. I make sure I have everything figured out before I start the artwork. Pays off in the long run.

I'm going to second that point....in almost all cases I've set up the set before adding people...tinkering with lighting before hand is so much easier!

V4/M4, M3/V3 and Genesis slow things down and with hair it's gets worse especially if you use Image based lights (uber stuff..)

Here's some visual aids that might help explain myself:

Here's the voyager bridge I mentioned:
http://www.sawvision.com/freebie-rdbridge1.html As you see, it looks all nice and pretty and I went, "Say, that looks pretty darned good, I'll get that!" So I download it and unzip it into content, and I open it up and this is what I get:

1: Shiny, featureless, useless plastic like bridge T_T

2: And I look in the zip folder and I see this:
The textures and skin or whatever one calls them are there, I just don't know how to get to them. @_@

3: And here's another zipfile of that TOS bridge, the older style, one:

    4: And here's the textures/skins for it.:

If I could figure out this dilemma, everything shall be fine, then.

And when I go and buy some of those bridge sets like Vanishing Point has, I hope it won't be a nightmare like this has been so far. >_<;</p>

I need to load the set and look at the setting under the surface tab.

I MIGHT have solved the thing regarding the monitors, in the very least.

Well, it's a small step, but a step none the less.

Okay easy fix...when you load the bridge file...it will ask you for the textures...you need to scroll back to the RD BRidge 01 Texture. The first file it will ask you for is HELM101 or something like that...scroll WAY down the list to the file...DAZ will keep to the directory and load the rest of the textures automatically

lights...they need to be toned down.

    http://www.sharecg.com/v/61739/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/UberEnvironmen2---mixed-set-1

the above three will task the hell out of your computer the quality if fantastic.

those lights were my first lights I used for my first comic. just remember to delete the leaf object file.

If you have lost the textures (which should be under "textures\sixus1\flayer") Sixus1 has released the critter as a freebie at:

I looked at that and it appears to be just that robe. But it's okay. I went digging through my storage discs and found the original zip file, so I've found them.

I looked at that and it appears to be just that robe. But it's okay. I went digging through my storage discs and found the original zip file, so I've found them.

The file does include the flayer (and the flayer textures) along with the clothing. I just double-checked :-) Should your archived file be corrupted you'll still have access to the critter's textures at the link above.

Well, until I hear back from someone who can help me with my MAT Poses problem, I've started working on something else.

I recently got the "Starship Bridge 5" from VanishingPoint. And while it really is a good model of the First Contact era bridge, it has its problems. Problem numero uno for me was that the command chairs (captain, first officer, counsellor) were too small. Tiny, in fact. What makes matters worse, the chairs are part of the base mesh, not seperate props or characters. So, I couldn't fiddle with the scale of the chairs without effecting the scale of the base.

So, I got the free download load of Hexagon last Saturday. Imported the base. And went through the process (and steep learning curve of Hexagon!) of making the base seperate props. I wound up with the base, captain's chair, first officer's chair, counsellor's chair, first officer's console, counsellor's console, and the helm/ops consoles. Scaled each component appropriately, and started working on making my next project: the bridge of the U.S.S. INVICTUS!

The first thing I did was change the color scheme of the bridge from brown and tans to blue and grays because I wanted a more militaristic looking ship. I added the helm console from RDUDA's Hornet bridge to act as the main tactical console (yes, there are THREE tactical consoles on the bridge! But, it works with the type of ship the Invictus is.). I, also, changed some of the graphics.

This is still a work-in-progress, so, be kind.

    Looking good so far.

    Be careful.....

It is REAL easy (and a lot of fun) to get distracted pulling models into Hexagon and modifying them to suit your needs. My stories are in the TOS era & I have had a great deal of fun disassembling TOS ships and sets and rebuilding them to suit my needs.

The other distraction is pulling textures into the image program of your choice & modifying the textures. In the long run, that will be more useful - by swapping out textures, you can turn almost anything into a Trek item. As an example, over on Poserworld, they just released a model of the UN Council chambers - by swapping out some textures, it will become a UFP council chamber - your only limit is your imagination.

You're telling me! I've got like a dozen different things I'm working on simultaneous! :bug:

Still looking for a ship I like to actually be the Invictus. Right now, it's an Insignia class. But, I'm leaning more and more toward the Ascension class. Still not good enough at Hexagon to do any major modification to ships.

Right now, I'm in the set building and character building stages. If anyone's interested, I'll post more of my WIPs.

There a way, for example to put okudagrams on Ptrope's TOS bridge? I am trying and on the black of the panels, it stays black.

    Thanks.
